SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina's Shalyn McMichael, a junior sprinter, and teammate Tiana Jones, a senior, have been named the Southern Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets December 3-5. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
McMichael, a native of Elgin, S.C., won the 400-meter dash at the Appalachian Invitational on December 5 with a time of 57.53. She also split 56.5 on the lead-off leg of the 4x400-meter relay. The Catamounts went on to take first place in the event.
High Point, N.C., native Jones finished first in the triple jump at the Appalachian Invitational with a combined distance of 39-5.75. She also leaped 17-0.25 in the long jump to place eighth.
The Catamounts return to action in 2010 when they compete at the Tar Heel Invitational January 8 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Other top field performers this week included:
College of Charleston's Emily Smith, a sophomore high jumper. Smith finished second in the high jump at the Roaring Tiger Opener with a distance of 5-6.5. The Cougars placed fifth out of 11 teams.
