GREENVILLE, S.C. - Former Furman women's basketball standout Jackie Smith will have her jersey No. 22 officially retired in halftime ceremonies during Thursday night's Furman-Indiana State game.
Smith was a three-time All-Southern Conference pick and two-time SoCon Player of the Year selection in 1988 & '89 who finished her career as the second all-time leading scorer in Furman history with 1,920 points. She was a member of two SoCon championship teams, including the 2000 squad that posted a 20-11 record and won the league tournament championship on the way to Furman's second NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Woodbridge, Va., native, served as team captain her junior and senior years and was named team most valuable player three times. She captured SoCon Player of the Week honors 11 times, the most by a Furman athlete in any sport in school history. In 1999 she was named Furman's Edna Hartness Female Athlete of the Year and was inducted into the university's athletics hall of fame in 2005.
She holds a bachelor's of science degree in health and exercise science from Furman.
Smith is currently in her fifth year at James Madison University, where she serves as associate head coach of the highly Lady Dukes basketball program, which has averaged nearly 25 wins per season (99-33) over the past four campaigns. Prior to going to James Madison, she worked three seasons as an assistant coach at Bucknell.
Smith is married to Rob Carson, assistant director of student athlete services at James Madison.
Tipoff for Thursday's contest against Indiana State at Carolina First Court at Timmons Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
