GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC Greensboro put four players in double digits and Amanda Leigh, Kendra Smith and Agne Girstautaite all notched career highs in points as the Spartans won their season-opener on Saturday, 85-68 over Morgan State.

Leigh matched her career high with 18 points, Smith added 14 and Girstautaite matched her career best with 12 points as the Spartans (1-0) got a balanced effort in winning their season-opener for the 10^th time in the last 12 seasons. Monique Floyd added 15 points, a team-high seven rebounds and a career-high eight assists for UNCG, which just missed putting all five starters in double figures. Lakiah Hyson finished with nine points.

Morgan State's Corin Adams, the MEAC's Preseason Player of the Year, scored a game-high 31 points, matching the Fleming Gym scoring record set on Jan. 19, 1990, by Lincoln Memorial's Debbie Hoskins. Georgien Williams had a game-high eight rebounds for the Lady Bears (0-1).

UNCG held just a six-point halftime lead but opened the second half on a 7-0 run to stretch its advantage to 13 points, its largest of the game at that point. The Lady Bears refused to go down quietly, however, putting together an 8-1 run to cut it back to six at 53-47 with 12:58 to play.

One possession later, Floyd converted a three-point play that seemed to re-awaken UNCG's offense. Floyd's layup and free throw ignited a 12-4 run, which Smith punctuated with a jumper off a Floyd assist to make it 65-51 with 8:49 to play.

UNCG would stretch its lead to as many as 22 at 85-63 with just under a minute to play before Adams hit a pair of free throws and Phylicia Jones nailed a 3-pointer for the final margin.

Adams nearly single-handedly kept the Lady Bears in the game in the first half, as she had 18 of Morgan State's 33 points in the opening frame.

After a Mahala Thomas jumper pulled Morgan State to within one point at 18-17 with 10:07 left before intermission, Adams streaked in for a fast-break layup to give the Lady Bears their first lead since holding a 7-6 advantage.

Smith hit one of her two 3-pointers to put the Spartans back on top, but Adams answered with a 3 of her own - one of her four on the afternoon - to give MSU its final lead of the day.

Hyson quickly answered with a 3 on the other end to put UNCG up 24-22 with 8:44 to play, and freshmen Amy Clapper and Dayshaun Richbow added a layup and a pair of free throws, respectively, to make it 28-22 just over seven minutes left in the opening frame.

MSU never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

Leigh hit four 3-pointers on the day, with her first giving the Spartans their first lead of the day at 6-5. After a pair of Adams free throws and back-to-back buckets from Smith, Leigh hit another 3 to push UNCG's lead to six.

UNCG dished off 23 assists Saturday, its most since having 24 against Elon on Jan. 27, 2007.

The Spartans have little time to savor the win, as they return to action Tuesday at Liberty. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.

NOTES: UNCG's 85 points were its most in a season-opener since an 89-86 loss at Virginia Tech on Nov. 21, 1996. ... The Spartans did not block a shot in the game, snapping a streak of 79 straight games with at least one block. Prior to Saturday, the last time UNCG did not block a shot was Jan. 2, 2007, in a 71-68 win over Chattanooga. ... UNCG improved to 2-0 against Morgan State and 19-8 against MEAC teams all-time.

Navy 68, Elon 61

ELON, N.C. - The Navy Midshipmen outscored the Elon Phoenix 42-19 in the second half of play to hand Elon a 68-61 loss on Saturday night at Alumni Gym in the final day of the Phoenix Classic Presented by Comfort Inn. With the loss, Elon fell to 1-1 on the season while Navy improved to 2-0.
 
"I think that we will be able to use this as a learning experience as we move forward in the season," head coach Karen Barefoot said. "I was extremely pleased with the first half performance by the team. Unfortunately, we made some bad decisions with the ball and allowed Navy to capitalize on them. I have to credit Navy, though, they competed hard in the second half and made shots when they needed to."
 
Elon shot 41 percent from the floor, including 57 percent from behind the arc, in the first half to take an 16-point advantage, 42-26, into the intermission. But Navy started the second stanza with a 12-4 run to cut the lead to just eight, 46-38, at 16:24 on a jumper by Megan Matheny. Elon pushed the lead back to 10 at 52-42 with 13:43 on the clock on a basket by Kelsey Evans. The Midshipmen then put together a 12-2 run to knot the game at 54 on two free throws by K.C. Gordon.
 
Elon got two points from Urysla Cotton and a free throw from Tiara Gause to regain at 57-54 lead at the 6:37 mark. Free throws by Navy's Jasmine Pitts cut the lead back to one, 57-56, just 10 seconds later. A jumper in the paint by Chey Arvin with 4:55 remaining gave Navy its first lead of the game at 58-57. Down by four, 63-59, Elon's Lei Lei Hairston layed the ball in to cut the lead to just two with 1:21 remaining in the game. Pitts converted four free throws, and Kristin Bowen added one, down the stretch to secure the 68-61 win for the Midshipmen.
 
Down by four, 7-3, to start the game, Elon scored 27 unanswered points to go ahead 30-7 with 9:07 on the clock. In the run, Ali Ford posted eight points while Julie Taylor hit back-to-back three point buckets.
 
Elon held onto a 22-point lead at 31-9 before the Midshipmen posted eight consecutive points to cut the lead to 14, 31-17, on a layup by Bowen with 5:54 remaining in the half. Elon scored the next four points, on two free throws by Evans and a jumper by Kallie Hovatter, to push the lead back to 18, 35-17. Navy cut the lead to 15 at 38-23 with 1:27 on the clock before Elon converted three free throws and a buck to increase the lead to 19, 42-23, with 39 second remaining. Bowen drained a three-pointer with 16 ticks on the clock to cut the lead to 16 heading into halftime.
 
Evans and Ford led the Phoenix with 12 point a piece. Evans also added eight boards, including four on the offensive end, and two blocks. For her efforts in the tournament, Evan was named to the all-tournament team. Cotton, Taylor and Hairston each added eight points for Elon.  Hovatter pulled in seven rebounds while Cotton and Courtney Medley each grabbed four. Elon shot 36.1 percent from the floor for the game and 40 percent from three-point range. The Phoenix connected on 68.4 percent of its shots from the free throw line.
 
Pitts paced the Midshipmen with 18 points and five assists. Gordon added 14 points and seven rebounds, including five offensive boards. Bowen posted 13 points and nine rebounds while Cassie Consedine tallied 10 points. Angela Myers grabbed a game-high 12 boards. Navy converted 35.3 percent of its shots, including 25 percent from behind the arc. The Midshipmen shot 81.3 percent from the free throw line.
 
Elon returns to action on Friday, November 20 in a 5 p.m. game with St. Andrews in Alumni Gym.
