The Citadel Wrestling Falls to NC State, 21-18
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel fell to NC State on Saturday to open the 2009-2010 season, 21-18. The Bulldogs hosted their first of three ACC opponents that will visit McAlister Field House this season.
Defending SoCon Champion and NCAA qualifier Odie Delaney started off the dual at the 197-pound weight class. Delaney started with a quick two-point take down and led 2-0 after one period. Delaney started down in the second period, but quickly escaped and reversed on Christian McClean and pinned him early in the second period to quickly put The Citadel up 6-0.
Bobby Isola jumped early on Ivan Muller in the Heavyweight bout with a 2-0 takedown. Muller earned an escape, cutting the lead to 2-1 to end period one. Isola escaped to earn the only point of the second period, going up 3-1. In the third period, Muller earned an escape point, but could not down Isola as NC State won at heavyweight to cut into the team lead to 6-3.
Rolling over the lineup at 125, Richard Alarcon earned a two-point takedown 30 second in to the match. Cummings escaped to trim the lead 2-1 and followed with a couple of two point takedowns to go up 5-2 after one. In the second, Alarcon started on top and Taylor Cummings quickly escaped, opening his lead to 6-2. Alarcon turned the tables with a two-point takedown, followed by an escape from Cummings making the score 7-4 for the NC State grappler which would be the final score after an uneventful third period. NC State tied up the match at 6-6.
NCAA qualifier Dairrus Little from NC State earned a two-point takedown at the end of the first period over true freshman Jordan Dix. Little started on top to start the second, but Dix earned an escape, cutting the lead to 2-1. Little got a two-point takedown with ten second to go in the first to go up 4-1 after one period. Little got the escape followed by a two-point takedown to start the second. Little increased his lead and won the match, 9-3. NC State would take the lead for the first time in the dual, 9-6.
Dale Shull of NC State earned a quick two-point take down on Nick LaFevre at 141, to take a 2-0 lead after one. LaFevre started on top in the second and rode out the period with Shull earning an illegal hold point to go up 3-0. The third period featured a scoreless affair with the match ending at 3-0 and NC State moving up 12-6 in the dual.
Colton Palmer for the Wolfpack jumped out of the gate with a quick two-point takedown on Pierre Frazile at 149 that followed by an injury timeout for Frazile that would result in him exiting the match with a quad injury. By default, NC State would increase their lead to 18-6 in the dual.
At 157, Bobby Ward of NC State earned a two-point takedown in the first period. True freshman Turtogtokh Luvsandorj earned an escape, cutting the lead to 2-1. Ward would follow with another two-point takedown, followed by another escape for Luvsandorj. Ward started on top in the second, with Luvsandorj earning two escapes to tie the match at four. In the third, Ward earned an escape point and would win the match 6-4 with riding time. The Wolfpack increased their dual lead to 21-6.
Derek Sickel took a two-point takedown on Kasey Young at 165 to take a 2-0 lead after one. Young started on top in the second, but Sickel earned a quick escape increasing his lead to 3-0. Young followed with a two-point takedown that Sickel would escape from, making the score 4-2. Young earned another two-point takedown just before the second period ended to tie the match at four. In the third period, Sickel would earn a two-point takedown and win the match with riding time, 7-4. The Citadel cut into the Wolfpack lead, 21-9.
At 174, J.C. Oddo earned a two-point takedown on NC State's Quinton Godley in the first period en route to a 5-1 decision cutting the NC State overall lead to 21-12.
In the final match of the dual at 184, The Citadel's Kelby Smith got past John Becker via injury default. Becker left in the third period and The Citadel would be earn six points to the team score to finish just short as NC State would win 21-18.

Wrestling Concludes The Citadel Open
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel wrestling squad hosted another successful Citadel Open this weekend at McAlister Field House. The freshman and sophomore tournament featured attached and unattached grapplers from all over the southeast. Five Citadel wrestlers placed in the event, three attached to The Citadel and two unattached.
Freshmen Kevin Timothy and Zane Newton were impressive in their debuts as both took second place finishes in their weight classes of 141 and 157, respectively. Timothy went 4-1 with two falls while Newton went 3-1. Sophomore David Ivashchenko also was impressive as he took fourth at 141, going 4-2 with two falls. A pair of freshmen, Cameron Childs and Giazzi Segarra, also found success in their first collegiate events, each going 3-2 in the tournament.
The unattached wrestlers in the tournament from The Citadel that found success were Dustin Paridon and Manuel Camargo. Paridon placed second at 133, going 3-1 in the tournament while Camargo placed fourth in the heavyweight division with a record of 4-2 and a fall. Freshmen Scott Edelson and J.J. Hellinger both went 3-2 while Shane Lee went 2-2 with two faults.

Vitaly Radsky Leads 'Cats at Hokie Open
SALEM, Va. ? Junior Vitaly Radsky advanced to the quarterfinals at 141 pounds to lead the Davidson wrestling team in the Hokie Open on Sunday at the Salem Civic Center. Nine Wildcats competed in the season-opening tournament.
Radsky advanced to the quarterfinals on a pair of decisions and a forfeit before North Carolina’s Danny Lopes narrowly defeated Radsky, 8-4.
Freshman Matt Zarth and senior Ben Altman both performed well at 125.
Zarth won his round of 64 match, but was sent to the consolation bracket by Virginia’s Matt Snyder, the fourth seed in the bracket and eventual third-place finisher. Zarth then pinned Michael Payne in 2:25 and won 10-4 decisions over Virginia’s Gabriel Gomez and Gardner-Webb’s Michael Slaughter before Brian Bokoski of North Carolina halted Zarth’s run in the consolation quarterfinals.
Altman won 16-0 over King College’s Eddie Long, but was sent to the consolation bracket by Duke’s Peter Terrezza, the seventh seed in the 125-pound bracket, 4-2. Altman won 19-1 over Appalachian State’s Austin Annas, the bracket’s eighth seed, before dropping a 6-2 decision to North Carolina’s Manuel Ramirez in the consolation pre-quarterfinal.
Junior Joe McGinley (157) and freshman Ike Crews (184) both scored falls in their opening matches. McGinley pinned Rodin Ndandula of Old Dominion in 1:32. Crews pinned Newberry’s TJ Cayruth in 1:37.
Freshmen Brent Mowry (157) and Chris Cirenza (165) also made their collegiate debuts. Sophomore Jorge Estrada competed at 174, while junior Charlie Wolff competed at 285.
The tournament featured double-elimination 64-man brackets, with single elimination in the round of 64 for brackets in which more than 32 wrestlers competed.
A total of 379 wrestlers competed in the non-team scoring event. Appalachian State, Arrichion Wrestlng Club, Campbell, Campbellsville, Cavalier WC, Cumberland, Duke, Gardner-Webb, George Mason, Kent State, King College, Liberty, Newberry, Old Dominion, Ohio University, Radford University WC, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Virginia, Chattanooga, VA Elite Wrestling Club, Virginia Tech (VT) and Virginia Military Institute were all represented.
The Wildcats will next compete at the Pembroke Open, hosted by UNC Pembroke, on Saturday.
Lopouchanski leads Spartans at Hokie Open
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ivan Lopouchanski claimed the title at 141 pounds and seven other Spartans placed as UNC Greensboro wrapped up competition at the Hokie Open on Sunday in the Salem Civic Center.
Lopouchanski opened his day with a second period pin over Elijah Faison from VMI before receiving a forfeit. He then scored an 11-8 decision against Ohio's Germane Lindsey and then pinned Dale DeBacco from Newberry in 2:29. Lopouchanski defeated Danny Lopes from North Carolina, 9-4, to advance to the finals where the received a default from Chase Skonieczny to win the 141 pound weight class.
Travis Sheehy also had a great afternoon for the Spartans as he finished in third place in the 157 pound bracket. Sheehy had a pin in just 37 seconds to open his day before defeating Taylor Knapp, 10-5 He beat Newberry's Latra Collick, 8-2, and then scored a 10-1 major decision over Joey Sheridan from Old Dominion to move into the semifinals. In the semifinals, he fell to Jesse Dong from Virginia Tech who is ranked 15th in the nation, but he rebounded to take third place with a 12-4 major decision against William Powell from Appalachian State.
Freshman Eric Chandler began his road to a fourth place finish at 125 pounds with a first period pin over Campbellsville's DeCoreus Leavell. He defeated Steve Mitcheff from Kent State, 10-5, and took down Michael Slaughter from Gardner-Webb by the same score. Chandler then defeated returning SoCon champion Demetrius Johnson from Chattanooga, 7-3, before falling to Matt Oliver from Newberry in the semifinals. Chandler ended his afternoon by dropping the third place match to Virginia's Matt Snyder.
At 133 pounds, Angel Garcia rebounded in the consolation bracket to come home with a fifth place finish. Garcia pinned Karim Shafi from Virginia in 1:35 and then defeated Tommy Pretty from Campbellsville, 13-7. He then won a 10-4 decision against Chattanooga's Cody Hood, but was edged by Justin LaValle from Old Dominion, 4-3 in the next round. He began his way through the consolation bracket with a 3-2 win over Jason DeLuca from North Carolina. He ended his day with a 14-5 major decision against VMI's Andrew Bannister and then beat North Carolina's Jeremy Shaw, 4-3, in the fifth place match.
Byron Sigmon, Andrew Saunders, Jeremy Cannon and Peter Sturgeon also placed for the Spartans on Sunday. They all advanced to wrestle in their respective seventh place match, but the matches never took place.
The Spartans return to the mat next weekend at the UNC Pembroke Open on Saturday Nov. 14.
VMI Wrestling Kicks Off Season at Hokie Open
SALEM, Va. - The VMI wrestling team opened its 2009-10 season on Sunday, competing at the Hokie Open, hosted by Virginia Tech at the Salem Civic Center.
A trio of Keydets reached the top eight in their weight classes, as VMI was one of 20 teams competing on the day. Freshman Andrew Bannister went 4-2 at 133 lbs., while sophomore Andrew Szymborski (174 lbs.) and senior Ronnie Ellsworth (197 lbs.) each went 3-2, falling in the consolation semifinals.
"I thought we wrestled really hard," said VMI head coach John Trudgeon. "If you compare this to last year's performance, this was a much stronger field, and I thought that we wrestled better. It seemed like we were much more competitive, and we're excited about that. Our conditioning was solid, all of our guys were wrestling hard all seven minutes. In fact, we won a number of matches right at the end or in overtime. We've got to get better, that's for sure, but Coach Skretkowicz and I are excited by our performance. We kept everybody healthy, though I'm sure we'll be sore tomorrow. It was a good, successful trip."
Bannister (LaPlata, Md.) began his run with a 7-5 win in overtime against North Carolina's Jeremy Shaw before dropping a 9-7 decision to Newberry's Sheridan Moran. In the consolation bracket, Bannister claimed an 8-0 major decision over Cumberland's Mathew Standfield before knocking off Ohio's Tim Silvers, 5-4. A forfeit win then moved Bannister to the semifinals against UNC's Angel Garcia, where the freshman lost a 14-5 major decision to end his day.
Szymborski (Crown Point, Ind.) also started his day with a win against a Tar Heel, defeating Mark Bryant 9-1. A defeault victory moved the Keydet to the Championship Quarterfinals, where he was pinned in 3:45 by Kent State's Keith Witt. Szymborski responded by pinning Witt's teammate, Brandonn Johnson, in 4:20 before Bagna Tovuujav claimed a 9-5 win to advance to the fifth-place match.
Ellsworth (Newport News, Va.) opened his season with a dominating, 17-6 major decision over King's Brandon Smith, and tacked on a 4-2 win over Duke's Robert Holbrook to reach the Championship Quarterfinal. There, the senior co-captain dropped an 8-3 decision to Newberry's Keeno Griffin to fall into the consolation bracket. In his next match, Ellsworth scored a 5-3 win against King's Frank Morgan before an 8-4 loss to Cumberland's Eric Metzler capped his run.
Also going 3-2 on the day were Michael Long and freshman Conor Black. Long claimed a major decision and a pin among his three wins at 157 lbs., while Black notched back-to-back pins in the consolation bracket at 165 lbs. Other Keydets to notch multiple wins on the day included sophomore David Yost at 141 lbs., freshman Bryce Garrison competing unattached at 165 lbs., freshman Evan Dill at 184 lbs. and sophomore Vinnie Gallo also at 184 lbs.
"We were excited about the performance of the freshman class, but also the job the sophomores did," said Trudgeon. "Guys like David Yost and Andrew Szymborski wrestled much more confidently and much more aggressively than they did last year, which is what we're looking for this season."
The Keydets return to action in two weeks, competing at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia on Nov. 22.
Young Wins 174 Title at the Hokie Open
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga freshman Jake Young capped off an impressive opening weekend to his collegiate career with a win at the Hokie Open in Blacksburg, Va. on Sunday. Young, a true freshman from Ooltewah, Tenn., posted five wins on his way to the 174 tournament title.
Young also went 1-1 in the Mocs' two losses to Virginia Tech and Kent State on Saturday, leaving him with a 6-1 mark on the weekend. His only loss was by one point to Virginia Tech's Anthony Trongone 7-6. All five of Young's wins in the tournament were hard fought decisions, with four wins coming by less than three points.
Young was tied 1-1 in the closing moments of the championship match against Old Dominion's Eric Decker. He scored a takedown with just under 10 second left on the clock to score the 3-1 win and his first collegiate tournament championship.
"To come in as a true freshman and score a win in your first collegiate tournament is exactly what we need out of our new guys," stated head coach Heath Eslinger. "He set a new standard for our team with his performance this weekend."
Sophomore Brandon Wright also had a solid showing at the Hokie Open, finishing third in the 165 bracket. He posted four wins and one loss in the event and is also 6-1 on the season.
Junior Mark Rogers went 3-3 in the 174 bracket to finish in sixth place overall. Junior Tom Minwell also had an even record at 3-3 and finished in sixth place in the heavyweight division. Freshman Jason McCroskey also place sixth in the event at 184.
Senior Josh Statum and junior Bond Davis both finished eighth in the 133 and 157 brackets, respectively.
The Mocs will open the 2009-10 home season this weekend against Gardner-Webb and Anderson on Saturday, Nov. 14. Match time begins at 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) in Maclellan Gym.
Mocs Fall to Kent State 22-15 in Season Opener
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team put up a strong fight but came up short in a 22-15 loss to Kent State in the first match of the Heath Eslinger era today.
The Mocs opened the year against the Flashes in Blacksburg, Va., this afternoon. Sophomore Demetrius Johnson started the dual meet with a 3-1 win over Stevie Mitcheff at 125. His win gave the Mocs a 3-0 lead.
No. 11 Danny Mitcheff put Kent State in front with a major decision (12-4) over freshman Josh Sandoval at 133. Chattanooga senior Cody Clevelnd answered with a pin (5:40) against Chase Skonieczny at 141 to put the Mocs back up 9-4.
Kent State posted two straight decisions at 149 and 157 to take a 10-9 lead before sophomore Brandon Wright answered with a 6-2 decision over Obie Simpson at 165. UTC extended its lead to 15-10 when true freshman Jake Young won his first collegiate match, 6-2 over Casey Newburg, at 174.
That was the last win for UTC as the flashes took the next three matches. Chattanooga will take on Virginia Tech in the nightcap at 5:00 p.m. (E.S.T.). Live stats for the match are available on GoMocs.com.

Mocs Drop Second Match of the Day at Virginia Tech
Chattanooga dropped its second match of the afternoon, suffering a 21-18 loss at Virginia Tech today. The Mocs (0-2) got behind 15-3 in the early going and could not catch up to the Hokies (2-0).
Senior Cody Cleveland did make a statement in the meet this afternoon. He put his No. 20 national ranking on the line and defeated seventh-ranked Chris Diaz (Dec. 11-6) at 141. Cleveland avenged a loss to Diaz in last year's meet in Chattanooga and scored a solid win over a top-10 opponent.
Cleveland's win got the Mocs on the board but UTC still trailed 9-3 after three matches. Chattanooga was down 15-3 when senior Joey Knox and sophomore Brandon Wright won back-to-back matches at 157 and 165.
Freshman Niko Brown won the 197 contest over Chris Penny (Dec. 7-3), to pull UTC to 21-2, but Chattanooga could not close the gap.
Junior Matt Lettner won the 285 bout by forfeit to put the final score at 21-18.
The Mocs will take part in the Hokie Open tomorrow in Blacksburg, Va., before returning home next weekend. UTC opens its home slate against Gardner-Webb and Anderson on Nov. 14 at 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.) in Maclellan Gym.
