COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Sam Arthur scored two goals and added an assist as South Carolina downed Furman 3-2 in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday evening in Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
Arthur opened the scoring at 33:08 on assists from Danny Cates and Vance Benson. Less than five minutes into the second half, Arthur doubled the Gamecocks lead, redirecting Mike Lindsay's cross past Furman goalkeeper Maros Valko.
Furman (4-5-2) cut the lead in half at 58:44 as sophomore Coleton Henning's header found the back of the net on assists from Eric Cobleigh and Jordan Howard to trim the lead to 2-1. Arthur helped the Gamecocks restore their two-goal lead 11 minutes later, however, as he assisted on Blake Brettschneider's eventual game-winning goal at 69:10.
Henning notched his second goal of the night, heading home Danny Hojaij's cross at 77:17, but Furman was unable to score the equalizer.
South Carolina (6-3-1) managed a 17-7 edge in shot attempts. Jimmy Maurer stopped three shots to earn the victory in goal for the Gamecocks while Valko turned away four shots in a losing effort for Furman.
Furman returns to Southern Conference play on Sunday when it travels to Appalachian State for a 2 p.m. contest.
