SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Joey Thompson, a sophomore at UNC Greensboro, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for October 7, the league office announced today.
The pre-business administration major from Columbia, Md., has a 4.0 GPA.
Thompson posted a time of 24:56.7 at the Charlotte Invitational, which beat the previous UNCG 8K record by more than 15 seconds. He became the first UNCG runner to finish in less than 25:00. Thompson's fourth-place finish helped the Spartan men to place third overall out of 21 teams.
Other nominees included Appalachian State football player Orry Frye, Davidson men's soccer player Charlie Reiter, and Georgia Southern women's cross country runner Brittani Martin.
