Sunday's Women's Soccer Roundup

Furman 1, College of Charleston 0

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Martha Hall netted her league-leading eighth goal in the 62nd minute and Jessica Smith notched her second straight shutout as Furman topped the College of Charleston 1-0 in Southern Conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Stone Stadium.

The win pushed Furman, undefeated at home this season, to 8-3-0 overall and 2-2 in SoCon play.  Charleston slipped to 7-4-1 overall and 3-1 inside the league.

After playing scoreless for over an hour, Furman broke the deadlock at 61:06 with the lone goal of the match.  Graham Marchman played a pass to Hall at the top of the box and the Knoxville, Tenn., product laced a shot past a diving Katie Tate of CofC and into the righthand corner.  The goal was Hall's fifth match-winner of the season and 10th of her career.

The Paladin defense had to turn away several Cougar attacks over the final 25 minutes, including a leaping effort by Smith to push Julie Romanik's long range shot over the cross bar with just under 15 minutes remaining.  Smith finished with three saves while securing her third shutout of the season and second on the weekend.

Furman held an 11-8 edge in shot attempts with both teams registering three shots on goal.  Tate made two saves for the Cougars in a losing effort.

UNC Greensboro 3, Georgia Southern 0

STATESBORO, Ga. - Senior Kelly Attayek responded to her first start of the season with a goal just 26 seconds into the game and UNC Greensboro added a pair of second-half goals to beat Georgia Southern 3-0 on Sunday.

Just two days after seeing their 33-match Southern Conference regular-season unbeaten streak come to an end at Davidson, the Spartans (7-5, 3-1 SoCon) wasted virtually no time getting on the board against the winless Eagles (0-11, 0-4 SoCon). Attayek missed the school record for fastest goal to start a game by just four seconds, taking a Cat Barnekow pass and slipping a shot past GSU keeper Lauren Santos just moments after the opening whistle.

UNCG never took its foot off the accelerator, rattling off 20 more shots on the day to finish with a 21-8 shot advantage.

Junior Kristin Player, who came off the bench for the first time this season, tallied her fifth goal of the season in the 66th minute. Jen Bronson ripped a shot that Santos saved but could not wrap up, and Player pounced on the rebound and knocked it home to give UNCG a 2-0 lead. Bronson was credited with an assist on the play.

Freshman Tabitha Padgett kept pace with Player for the team lead in goals, notching her fifth of the year in the closing minutes. With 87:23 gone in the contest, Padgett converted a Jaimey Etten pass for the final margin. Her goal came just over three minutes after she put a shot off the post.

Kelsey Kearney and Alex Perry combined for the shutout, with Kearney working the first 77:35 before giving way to Perry. Neither keeper was forced to make a save, as none of Georgia Southern's eight shots were on frame.

Danae Kaimuloa led the Eagles with three shots on the afternoon, while Sara Oland had two. GSU was shut out for the fifth game in a row.

Santos allowed three goals and made seven saves.

The win was UNCG's seventh in a row over Georgia Southern, which saw its record fall to 0-18-1 since its last win, which came on Oct. 3, 2008.

Davidson 2, Elon 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Elon women's soccer team suffered its first Southern Conference loss of the season as the Davidson Wildcats scored twice in the first 12 minutes of action to earn a 2-0 victory over the visiting Phoenix at Alumni Stadium. The loss halted Elon's winning streak at five matches as the Phoenix dropped to 7-3-1 on the season and 3-1-0 in league action. With the win, Davidson improved to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon.

Davidson struck quickly as the Wildcats' Blakely Low drilled her fourth goal of the season into the top right corner of the near post to put the home team up 1-0 at 3:54. Suzanne Sittko was credited with her third assist of the year.

The Wildcats kept the pressure on, taking advantage of a misplayed ball by the Elon back line at the 11:50 mark. Kyri Bye-Nagel cushioned the Davidson lead with a shot to the right post as the 'Cats went ahead 2-0.

Down two goals, Elon pushed forward and had several good looks at the goal just minutes later. Three of Elon's next four attempts were blocked, including Foley's header off a corner kick in the 16th minute.

The Elon defense withstood the Davidson attack for the remainder of the game as Phoenix keeper Sydney Little stopped a career-high 11 shots. Unfortunately, the damage was already done and Elon was unable to overcome the early deficit.

Davidson held a 15-10 advantage in the shot tally, while Elon attempted six corner kicks compared to four by the 'Cats.

Wofford 4, The Citadel 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford Terriers defeated The Citadel 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in their fourth Southern Conference match of the season. The Terrier's are now 2-10 overall and 1-3 in SoCon while the Bulldog's move to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in SoCon.

Wofford began the game with the first two shots in the opening five minutes. Neither team had strong scoring chances until Daniella Fatti took a shot from 35 yards out that went into the left side of the net. Megan Wellborn had the assist on the goal at 30:42, which was Fatti's first of her career. In the first half, Wofford had a four to three advantage on shots.

In the second half, the Terriers controlled the pace of play. At 55:16, Jewel Kawamoto placed a corner kick into the box that Megan Wellborn headed into the net for a 2-0 lead. It was Wellborn's first career goal. Wofford continued to get good chances and limited The Citadel's possession of the ball. Late in the game, Jewel Kawamoto served a corner kick into play that found Syndey Reed for a header that went to the right of the goalie for a 3-0 lead at 88:12. With 39 seconds left in the game, Monica Ploetzke scored from 20 yards out as her shot went to the right corner of the net. Samford 4, Appalachian State 0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford scored three first half goals en route to a 4-0 win over Appalachian State University women's soccer Sunday afternoon in Birmingham.

The Bulldogs improve to 7-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the SoCon while ASU drops to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Samford got the scoring started in the 16th minute when Shannon Healy scored off of a direct kick outside the box.

The Bulldogs tacked on their second goal just three minutes later when Paige Lanter scored off a shot that sliced just into the left side of the goal.

Hillary Samuels added the third goal of the half when she took a cross pass from Caroline Baxter and put it in the bottom right corner of the goal.  Sarah Wilkinson scored in the 66th minute to cap the scoring four the Bulldogs.

Appalachian had an opportunity four minutes into the second half but Taylor Dunlap's shot was stopped by Alyssa Whitehead. The Mountaineers' only other shot on goal was by Katy Dodd.

Paige Morrow, Sydney Hill and Dunlap combined for six of ASU's eight shots while Lanter had three shots for Samford.

Emma White made eight saves in her first start of the season while Whitehead and Sarah White each made a save for Samford.

Chattanooga 3, Western Carolina 3

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Two own goals in the final three minutes of regulation led to a double-overtime tie between the Lady Mocs and Western Carolina in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the North River Complex.

With the game tied at two and time winding down, the Lady Mocs sent a direct kick toward the goal. The ball deflected off a Catamount player and Western Carolina's keeper into the goal to put Chattanooga up 3-2 with 2:13 to play in regulation.

Western Carolina quickly got the ball back to their end of the field and took advantage of a corner kick.  With a crowd of players in front of the net, the ball deflected off a Chattanooga player and into the goal to tie the game with just 17 seconds to play.

In the two overtime periods, each team got off four shots, but neither could find the net and the Lady Mocs netted their first tie of the year and move to 6-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league action. The Catamounts are 5-3-4 overall and 2-0-2 after tying Samford in a double-overtime affair Friday night in Birmingham, Ala.

Chattanooga's Becca Smith struck quickly netting the first goal of the game in the second minute on an assist from Donna-Kay Henry, but the lead would be brief when WCU's Bri Cunningham scored her second goal of the year with 5:19 gone in the game. Henry took a pass from Anna Cusick from the left and gave the Lady Mocs a 2-1 lead just before the half with her sixth goal of the year.

Western Carolina knotted it up just after the start of the second half on a goal from Renee Anderson from Rachael Schomper.

The Lady Mocs outshot Western Carolina 16-15 with a 10-7 shots on goal advantage. Chattanooga keeper Taylor Davidson had four saves in the game and Western Carolina's Katie Jacobs, who came into the game in relief in the first half, had six saves.
