SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Five Southern Conference men's soccer student-athletes earned CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors. Davidson's Charlie Reiter and Elon's Steven Kinney earned first team honors. Appalachian State's Sean Dreybus along with Wofford's Nick Schuermann and Branson Hyatt garnered second team plaudits.
Reiter boasts a 3.48 grade point average majoring in political science, while ranking among the top scorers in the country this season with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points. The total leads the Southern Conference.
Earlier this season, Reiter was named the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week for all games played September 29-October 5. He tallied five points (2 goals, 1 assist) as he helped the Wildcats pick up conference wins over College of Charleston (3-2 OT) and Georgia Southern (3-0). Reiter also scored in Davidson's 4-1 win over then-No. 6 Duke (Oct. 6).
Kinney is the first Elon men's soccer player to earn the distinction. By virtue of being named to the first team, Kinney will be included on the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Team.
The 2008 Academic All-Southern Conference honoree currently holds a 3.70 GPA as an accounting major. Kinney has been honored for excellence in the classroom on numerous occasions, earning second-team NSCAA/adidas Men's College Scholar All-American recognition last season. The back was also chosen as one of the 30 finalists for the 2009 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
A sophomore fron Newport News, Va., Dreybus earned second-team honors for the first time in his career. Dreybus is tied for third on the team in goals this season with three and has six points.
A sophomore accounting major, Dreybus has a 3.80 GPA in accounting.
Schuermann, a senior from Fort Mill, South Carolina, has started all 13 games this season on defense. He has scored two goals and anchored a defense that has allowed the fewest goals against in the SoCon. Schuermann is majoring in biology and has started all 60 games played in his career at Wofford.
Hyatt, a senior from Aiken, South Carolina, has also started all 13 games this season on defense. He has three goals and three assists on the season for nine points, which is second on the team. In his career, Hyatt has started 53 of 62 games played with five goals and six assists for 16 career points. He is majoring in biology.
This marks the first time Wofford has had two players named Academic All-District in the same season. Schuermann becomes only the second player in school history to receive the honor twice, as he also earned second-team honors in 2008.
