BOONE, N.C. - J.J. Elder scored off of a Steven Sassano corner kick in the 97th minute to give Appalachian State University men's soccer a 2-1 overtime win over UNC Greensboro Tuesday night at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium.

With the win Appalachian improves to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4 in the SoCon while UNCG drops to 5-9-3 overall 2-2-2 in conference play. 
On the game-winner, Sassano sent in a corner kick a little long, but Ryan Duffy headed it back toward the center of the goal where Elder headed it past the UNCG keeper to set off the celebration.

The Spartans took the first lead of the game in the 14th minute when Cruz Oronos fired a free kick that was stopped by Collin Taylor but Matt Foxx came in and knocked the rebound past Taylor for his fourth goal of the season.

The Apps struck back just two minutes later when Lee Rutter sent a tap pass to Arie Muniz that Muniz delivered from the right to left that Sean Dreybus headed past UNCG keeper Peyton Ford.  The goal was Dreybus' third of the season while Muniz got his third assist and Rutter his first.

ASU dominated most of the play, outshooting the Spartans 21-11, including 14-5 in the final 55 minutes and held a 9-4 advantage in corners.

The Spartans best chance came with 13 minutes to play in the second period when Foxx sent a cross from the right side that Thomas Campbell got a head on but was stopped by Taylor.

The Mountaineers had a chance to end it in regulation when Luis Calzadilla took a pass from David Dodge and dribbled down the left side but Ford just got a hand on the shot to knock it away.

The win marks the fifth-straight win for ASU over UNCG.

No. 2 Wake Forest 4, Davidson 1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior Alex Caskey scored the Wildcats' lone goal as four different goal-scorers powered No. 2 Wake Forest to a 4-1 victory over Davidson men's soccer on a rainy Tuesday night in Spry Stadium.

Caskey tallied his seventh goal of the season off a free kick from 25 yards out, placing the ball just inside the left post in the top corner with 18 minutes left in the match. It was not enough though as Davidson (10-6) fell to a nationally-ranked opponent for the first time in three matches this season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chip Sanders made nine difficult saves for Davidson, as both teams battled adverse conditions. A steady rain persisted throughout the entire match, creating sloppy field conditions.

Wake Forest (12-2-2) struck first at 3:19. Sanders made a pair of saves, but the 'Cats were unable to clear it, and Andy Lubahn was able to score from close range. Wake Forest's second tally came at 19:01 off a free kick from 24 yards out by Austin da Luz. With 13:13 remaining in the half, Zack Schilawski headed in a cross from Corben Bone to give Wake Forest a 3-0 edge at halftime.

The 'Cats were not without opportunities, though. Senior F Charlie Reiter missed with a shot just right in the eighth minute. Corner kicks were nearly even as Wake Forest held just a 4-3 advantage for the half.

Wake Forest's fourth goal came off a Bone corner kick, as Ike Opara headed it in 3:08 into the second half.

The 'Cats had a few opportunities late as both Reiter and senior forward Clinton Smith had shots stopped by Austin Chelko. Junior forward Mauricio Simms had a close-range opportunity but lifted the shot high. Senior Robby Goldsberry played the final 9:16 in goal for Davidson, making one save. Corner kicks finished 10-9 in favor of Wake Forest.

Davidson will next face UNC Greensboro on the road in a crucial Southern Conference match on Saturday night.

Elon 4, Winthrop 0

ELON, N.C. - The Elon men's soccer team coupled a strong offensive performance with an impressive defensive showing to earn a 4-0 shutout over the visiting Winthrop Eagles under a steady rainfall at Rudd Field in non-conference soccer action on Tuesday night. The Phoenix put a halt to Winthrop's scoring streak, which ranked first in the country at 21 consecutive games. Senior Erfan Imeni and freshman Chris Thomas each netted two goals in the victory as Elon improved to 7-6-2 on the year. Winthrop suffered its first loss in the last eight games, dropping to 10-3-2 overall.
 
The Phoenix got on the board quickly, scoring in the 10th minute of the contest. Senior defender Steven Kinney sent the ball down the right side of the field to rookie Gabe Latigue. Latigue served the ball towards the middle of the field, finding Imeni who rocketed his first goal of the season from about 30 yards out at the 9:24 mark.
 
Elon dominated the possession and Imeni added to the Phoenix lead in the 21st minute. Senior Justin Wyatt curled the ball to the low far post and Imeni finished the play from six yards out to put Elon on top, 2-0.
 
Elon continued its relentless attack, netting its third goal of the half just four minutes later. Wyatt pushed a pass forward to a streaking Thomas who knocked in his sixth score of the season, sending a shot to the far post from 15 yards out.  
 
The Phoenix held a 3-0 lead after 45 minutes, not allowing a single Winthrop shot on goal in the opening period.
 
In the 62nd minute, Thomas increased his team-leading scoring total to seven, blasting an attempt from about 15 yards out into the far corner of the net. Winthrop had no answer and the Elon back line held firm to earn the squad's seventh clean slate of the season. 

Phoenix keeper Clint Irwin recorded two saves in the winning effort. Enrique Miranda stopped four shots in the net for the Eagles. Elon controlled the attack, outshooting Winthrop 16-10, including an 8-2 tally on goal.
 
Elon will play its final road game of the regular season when it travels to Radford on Friday, October 30 at 7 p.m.

Furman - College of Charleston, PPD

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Furman's men's soccer match versus the College of Charleston, scheduled for Tuesday evening at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., was postponed due to inclement weather.  The match will be rescheduled, but a makeup date is yet to be determined.

Wofford-Clemson, Cancelled

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's soccer match against Clemson tonight at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina was postponed due to inclement weather conditions in the Clemson area.  No make-up date will be set.

Also, the postponed High Point game from October 14 at High Point will not be rescheduled.

The Terriers will be back in action this Friday, October 30 at 6 pm against College of Charleston at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, SC.  It will be their sixth Southern Conference match of the 2009 season.
