Furman Women's Golf Wins FIU/Pat Bradley Women's Golf Championship
Paladins Claim Seven-Stroke Victory, Alexa Rancourt Finishes Third.
Fort Myers, Fla. -- Freshman Alexa Rancourt (70-71-71=212) carded a final round 71 to lead the Furman women’s golf team (290-288-292=870) to the team title at the 32nd annual Pat Bradley Women’s Golf Championship at the par-72 Pelican Preserve Golf and Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday.
The victory marked Furman’s first in a regular season tournament since claiming the Lady Paladin Invitational title in 2005. The Paladins took first place at the Southern Conference Women’s Championship in both 2008 and 2009.
“I’m very proud of this team,” said Furman coach Jen Hanna. “They put in a lot of work throughout the fall season and its good for them to see that work pay off this week. It was a nice rebound for us after struggling last week at the Mercedes-Benz.”
Furman, which shot four-over 292 on Tuesday, finished seven strokes ahead of second place South Florida and nine strokes in front of UCF. Host Florida International placed fourth and Missouri State and North Texas tied for fifth place. Stetson, Drake, Daytona State College and Florida Gulf Coast rounded out the top 10 in the 15-team event.
Rancourt, a native of Portland, Maine, birdied her final three holes to earn third place and finish the 54-hole tournament at four-under par. Junior Stefanie Kenoyer (71-72-74=217) finished in a tie for sixth place at one-over after a final round 74. Paladin sophomore Liz Wendt (74-75-73=222) climbed to a 15th place finish on the strength of a final round 73.
South Florida’s Shena Yang (68-68-72=208) took individual medalist honors at eight-under. She finished three strokes ahead of second place Valentina Fontaine (69-69-71=211) of UCF and four stroke in front of Rancourt.

Karlsson, Sundh Post Top 10 Finishes to Lead WCU Women's Golf to 8th-Place Finish
Finish snaps Western Carolina's string of three-straight team fall championships
Kiawah Island, S.C. - Two Catamounts posted top 10 finishes as Western Carolina finished in eighth place at the 18-team Palmetto Intercollegiate concluded Tuesday afternoon at the par-72, 5,916-yard Oak Point Golf Club. Senior Desiree Karlsson fired a five-over 221 to finish tied for sixth while countryman, junior Josefine Sundh, was one stroke in arrears in a tie for 10th to pace WCU to an eighth place finish overall.
Karlsson has four top 10 finishes to date this fall, while Sundh has thrice finished inside the top 10. The Swedish tandem of Karlsson and Sundh combined for 19 of WCU's 29 birdies in the three-round event.
Western Carolina equaled its best team round of the two-day, three-round tournament on Tuesday, recording a team score of 300 for a 54-hole score of 909. The eighth-place finish for the Catamounts snapped WCU's string of three-straight team and individual championships to open the 2009 season
East Tennessee State blistered the field, shooting 879 to win the team championship by 16 strokes over second-place, Kansas (895). Kennesaw State finished third, one stroke in arrears at 896, followed by East Carolina (897) and Maryland (898) rounding out the top five.
Maryland's Jessie Holldandsworth, who shot seven-under, 137, on the opening day of the three-round tournament, limped home with a four-over 76 but managed to stave off both Arkansas-Little Rock's Mallory Fraiche (217) and Sinead O'Sullivan (217) from East Tennessee State to win the individual medalist honors by four strokes.
Western Carolina freshman Malin Jansson, who recorded 38 pars through 54 holes, finished tied for 32nd at 228, carding a two-over 74 on the final 18 holes Tuesday. Rounding out WCU's finishers were senior Tiffany Schisler in a tie for 71st (238) and sophomore Blaire Minter, tied for 76th (239).
The Catamounts, who withdrew prior to the Richmond Intercollegiate two weeks ago due to team illness, will have one final tournament this fall before turning its attention to the six-event spring that tees off in February and includes hosting a pair of events - the Low Country Intercollegiate (March 12-14) and the Mimosa Hills Intercollegiate (April 4-6).
East Tennessee State Captures 2009 Palmetto Intercollegiate Title
The East Tennessee State women's golf team fired a 296 in the third round to finish with an 879 and take the 16-stroke victory at the 2009 Palmetto Intercollegiate held Oct. 26-27 at Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C. Kansas finished second with an 895 and Kennesaw State placed third just one stroke behind the Jayhawks. The College of Charleston placed 13th overall with a 924 in 54 holes.
East Carolina shot an 897 for fourth and rounding out the top five was Maryland with an 898.
Maryland's Jessi Hollandsworth took home individual medalist honors with her 213. Tied for second was UALR's Mallory Fraiche and ETSU's Sinead O'Sullivan who both fired a 217.
Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) led the Cougars with a three-round total of 224. She shot a 73 in the third round to finish tied for 17th. Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) and Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) tied for 48th each with a 232 while Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) fired a 236 to tie for 67th. Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) rounded out the Cougar effort with a 241 for a tie at 82nd.
Three Cougars competed as individuals with Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.) tying for 55th with a 233 and Courtney Brink (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) finishing 85th with a 246. Maeve McKenna (Hangham, Mass.) placed 87th with a 253.
The Cougars are next in action at the Pinehurst Challenge Nov. 2-3 at Pinehurst #6 in Pinehurst, N.C.

Baumgartner Leads Bulldogs in Palmetto Intercollegiate
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Golf wrapped up the Palmetto Intercollegiate in 18th place on Tuesday at Kiawah's Oak Point Country Club. The tournament was hosted by the College of Charleston who concluded the two-day event in 13th place.
The Bulldogs totaled a 1001 with scores of 331, 340 and 330 in the three rounds. Sophomore Bree Baumgartner shot par in the third round to lead The Citadel with a 230 (+14), tying for 37th place overall. Alanna-Jean Keith shot a third round 85 for a two-day total of 250 for 86th place, while Sheri Rockefeller (259), Christine Clark (265) and Natalie Flores (281) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
East Tennessee State claimed the team title with a two-day total of 879, while Kansas edged Kennesaw State by one stroke with an 895 for second place. Maryland's Jessie Hollandsworth won the individual title after shooting a 213 (-3), four strokes ahead of the University of Arkansas - Little Rock's Mallory Fraiche and ESTU's Sinead O'Sullivan who tied for second with 217 (+1).

Elon Women's Golf Takes 10th in Final Fall Event
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The Elon Phoenix women's golf team concluded its fall schedule of events on Tuesday with the third round of the 2009 Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Conference rival College of Charleston. The Phoenix notched a 10th-place showing in its final fall event with Tara McFadden finishing in a tie for sixth in the 93-golfer field.
McFadden fired a final round 76 for a three-round total of 221 (75-70-76) and finished eight strokes behind medalist winner Jessie Hollandsworth (69-68-76--213) of Maryland. McFadden tied for the second-best scoring on par-three holes, going -1 through her three rounds. She also recorded 37 pars.
Shannon Prunty was Elon's second finisher, placing in a tie for 42nd after she posted a 231 (76-80-75). Kelsey Johnson's 233 (80-75-78) placed her in a tie for 55th while Lauren Lebak finished 70th with a 237 (79-77-81). Finally, Meghan Green tied for 71st with a three-round score of 238 (81-78-79).
Elon's tournament total was 918 after a final round 308. The Phoenix tallied rounds of 310 and 300 during Monday's two rounds and entered Tuesday's play in 12th place.
East Tennessee State (289-294-296--879) cruised to the tournament title by 16 strokes over second-place Kansas (306-295-294--895). Kennesaw State (297-297-302--896), East Carolina (295-303-299--897) and Maryland (296-290-312--898) rounded out the top-five.
Western Carolina was the lone SoCon foe to place ahead of Elon. The Catamounts (300-306-300--906) placed eighth.
The Phoenix finished ahead of SoCon programs College of Charleston (13th; 299-309-316--924) and The Citadel (18th; 331-340-330--1001) in the 18-team field. Elon also bested schools such as William & Mary (T11th; 312-302-307--921), Mississippi State (14th; 315-309-305--929), Richmond (15th; 313-312-307--932) and Miami (17th; 325-301-315--941).
Elon will return to competition in the spring. During its fall season, the Phoenix earned four top-10 finishes in four events. McFadden either won or shared titles in two tournaments.
