Wofford 1, Davidson 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Wofford men's soccer won 1-0 over Davidson Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium in Davidson, North Carolina. The Terriers are currently 4-0-1 in Southern Conference play for first place in the standings and are the lone undefeated team in league games.
The Terriers move to 8-1-3 overall and 4-0-1 in SoCon play while Davidson shifts to 10-5-0 overall and 3-3 in SoCon action.
In the first half, the Terriers opened with the first shot of the game at 7:37 by Paulo Bonfim which was blocked. A header shot by Davidson's Brian McGue at 8:46 went wide left. In less than 5 minutes at 25:28, Wofford attempted three shots by Andrew Eppelsheimer that went wide right, Moe Kelli who was blocked, and Armin Kinigadner that went high respectively. With only four shots attempted by each team in the first half, the score was tied at 0-0.
During the second half, the Terriers opened up the shots again with Armin Kinigadner at 52:05 with a shot that went right. After four shots attempted by Davidson, it was Wofford who finally scored with a shot at 87:37 by Kentrel Owens, ten yards out. It was Owens' fifth goal of the season.
With the win, Wofford has set a new mark for SoCon wins in a season with four. In addition, the eight overall wins surpass the mark for the most in Wofford's NCAA Division I era.
Wofford had a 10 to nine lead on shots and tied four to four on corner kicks. Wofford's Thomas Hunter had three saves while Davidson's Chip Sanders had none.
The Terriers are back in action Tuesday, October 27 against Clemson at Historic Riggs Field at 7 pm in Pickens, South Carolina.
Furman 3, Elon 2
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Caleb Suri's goal in the 74th minute broke a 2-2 deadlock and lifted Furman past Elon 3-2 in Southern Conference men's soccer action before a crowd of 466 on Saturday night at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The junior played a give-and-go with Brooks Duff before unleashing a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that ricocheted off of a defender and past Elon goalkeeper Clint Irwin at the 73:07 mark. The game-winning strike marked the first goal of the season for Suri and first assist of the campaign for Duff.
With the victory, Furman evened its SoCon record at 2-2 while improving to 7-6-2 overall this season. Elon slipped to 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-0 in league play.
Furman jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening 22 minutes before seeing the Phoenix equalize less than 11 minutes later. Defender Jonathan Collier made a long run down the left side and placed a shot into the righthand corner from 15 yards to put the Paladins on top at 7:27. Nasarachi Onyeuku doubled the lead on 22 minutes with his second goal of the season. Jordan Howard curled a free kick into the box and Onyeuku redirected it into net at the top of the six-yard box to up the margin to 2-0.
Elon trimmed the lead to one goal in the 27th minute on Chris Thomas' fifth tally of the season. Thomas slid a 10-yard effort past Furman keeper Alec Kann on a cross from the right off of the foot of Justin Wyatt. In the 33rd minute, Onyeuku attempted to clear a bouncing ball out of the box, but the ball glanced off of his foot and looped over Kann and into the Paladin net for an own goal to tie the match at 2-2.
Elon outshot Furman 13-11 on the night with each team registering seven attempts on goal. Kann made five stops to earn the victory in net for the Paladins while Irwin totaled four saves for the Phoenix.
Elon will be back in action Tuesday evening when it hosts Winthrop. Furman travels to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., to face the College of Charleston at 6 p.m. on Tuesday before returning home to host Georgia Southern next Saturday at 7 p.m.
College of Charleston 2, Appalachian State 1
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - College of Charleston men's soccer kept its postseason hopes alive on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Appalachian State at Patriots Point Stadium.
Appalachian State (4-8-1, 1-4 SoCon) got on the board in the 38th minute of play when Arie Muniz knocked the ball past Charleston defenders and headed it over the head of sophomore goalkeeper Clark Hankins. The shot from 16 yards out was Muniz's sixth score of the season.
As the clock ticked down the final seconds of the first half, an Appalachian State foul gave the ball to the Cougars. Freshman midfielder Ralph Lundy took the free kick from 35 yards out, which was redirected by midfielder Francis Twohig into the net with 1.5 seconds left on the clock. The two teams entered the locker room at halftime tied 1-1.
Things picked up for CofC (9-8-0, 3-2 SoCon) in the second half as the Cougars outshot the Mountaineers 5-3. Junior Branko Gavric capitalized on a foul by Appalachian State and scored off a free kick that arced towards the near post at the 81:30 mark. The goal was Gavric's second of the season and gave the Cougars a 2-1 advantage with 8:30 left in the game.
The Mountaineers threatened to even the score and take the game into overtime when they made back-to-back shots in the 88th minute. Less than 10 seconds after Hankins saved a shot by David Dodge, Appalachian State's Sean Dreybus attempted to come around the near corner but was blocked by a Charleston defender.
UNC Greensboro 6, Georgia Southern 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Thomas Campbell scored two goals and A.J. Nelson added a goal and two assists as UNC Greensboro cruised to a 6-0 win over Georgia Southern in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
Keeper Payton Ford posted nine saves in notching his third shutout of the season.
UNCG's six-goal explosion was its highest scoring output since a 6-0 win over Georgia Southern (0-13-1, 0-4-3 SoCon) in the first round of the SoCon tournament in 2005.
Campbell got the scoring started for the Spartans (5-7-3, 2-1-1 SoCon) in just the sixth minute, taking a Nelson through ball at the top of the box and beating GSU keeper Mike Gubosh one-on-one.
Campbell added his second score in the 56th minute to make it a 5-0 contest, scoring on a nearly identical play. E.J. O'Keeffe split a pair of Eagle defenders to hit Campbell in stride at the top of the box, and Campbell dribbled in and again beat Gubosh one-on-one. Ryan Davis also picked up an assist on the play.
Campbell had a couple of solid opportunities to complete the hat trick, but Gubosh stopped a shot at point-blank range and Campbell had another goal waved off for offides.
Nelson had assists on each of the Spartans' first two goals. In the 31st minute, Nelson took a ball down to the right touchline and slid a pass to Will Mack, who converted from 8 yards out to make it a 2-0 affair.
Cruz Oronos notched his second goal of the 2009 campaign just moments later, stealing a ball in the midfield, dribbling in and firing a shot lower left from 20 yards out at the 31:18 mark, just a minute and a half after checking into the game.
Nelson got in on the scoring act in the 51st minute, nodding home a Mike Magnotic free kick from about 12 yards out.
Joe Layton capped the scoring in the 80th minute, coming up with a takeaway and finishing top shelf for the final goal of the evening.
John Cox paced the Eagles with five shots in the game, including a strike with just under 16 minutes left that Ford was forced to punch over the crossbar.
Gubosh made six saves but allowed six goals for GSU.
UNCG held a 21-17 shot advantage and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
