Furman 1, Clemson 0
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Senior Debola Ogunseye headed in the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lift Furman to a 1-0 victory over Clemson in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday evening at Historic Riggs Field as the Paladins and Tigers celebrated the 75th anniversary of the schools playing the first soccer match in state history.
The win, Furman's first at Riggs Field, improved the Paladins to 6-6-2 on the season. It also marked the first time Furman has downed Clemson in back-to-back seasons. Prior to kickoff, Clemson and Furman commemorated the first match in state history which took place between the schools on February 14, 1934, as Furman defeated Clemson 1-0 at Manley Field in Greenville.
"It was a hard fought game against Clemson as usual and definitely a team win," said Furman coach Doug Allison. "It was great to get the shutout and hopefully we can use the momentum from this game to finish strong in Southern Conference play."
With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Eric Cobleigh delivered a bending cross to the top of the 18-yard box. Coleton Henning headed the ball forward to Ogunseye at the top of the six-yard box and the senior directed his header past Clemson keeper Joseph Bendik with 1:08 left to play.
The Paladins controlled much of the possession over the first hour of play, but had to turn away several Clemson shots during the final 30 minutes. Goalkeeper Alec Kann notched four saves in a 20-minute span of the second half to keep the game knotted at 0-0 before Ogunseye delivered the go-ahead tally with his sixth goal of the season.
Furman outshot the Tigers 19-11, including 9-4 in shots on goal. Bendik finished with eight saves for the Tigers.
The Paladins return to SoCon play on Saturday when they host Elon at Stone Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Virginia Tech 1, Davidson 0
BLACKSBURG, Va. - An own goal off a Virginia Tech corner kick in the last minute of play gave the Atlantic Coast Conference power a 1-0 win over the Davidson men's soccer team on Tuesday night at Thompson Field.
Virginia Tech's Andrew Baden made contact with the ball after it entered the six-yard box, and the ball deflected off a Davidson defender and into the net. With the loss, Davidson fell to 10-4, while Virginia Tech improved to 4-8-2.
Virginia Tech outshot Davidson, 12-8 on a strong first half. The Hokies also held an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Davidson had two back-to-back scoring opportunities in the second half with just under 18 minutes remaining. Junior MF Alex Caskey (Dunwoody, Ga) just missed the far-post on a shot from left of the net, 10-yards out. Reiter then missed right after the 'Cats intercepted the ensuing goal kick.
Junior Yannick Pilgrim had an opportunity in front of the goal from 12-yards out with less than 12 minutes remaining, but goalkeeper Stefan Caulfield successfully challenged the shot and made the save, one of his three on the night.
The Wildcats defense fended off four consecutive corner kicks in the 56th and 57th minutes, only allowing one shot, which was blocked before reaching goalkeeper Chip Sanders.
Virginia Tech generated the majority of the offensive opportunities early in the first half. Brendan Dunn nearly rolled a shot inside the right post in the ninth minute, and the Hokies received two consecutive corner kick opportunities in the 14th minute.
The Hokies outshot the 'Cats 8-4 for the half, but Davidson recorded the lone shot on goal. Senior forward Charlie Reiter had an opportunity in the 22nd minute. Reiter took three of Davidson's four shots in the half.
Next for Davidson will be a crucial Southern Conference match against Wofford in the regular season home finale on Oct. 24 in Alumni Stadium. The seven members of the Class of 2010 will be recognized prior to the match. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Winthrop 1, College of Charleston 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team picked up momentum in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a 1-0 deficit to Winthrop on Tuesday evening at Patriots Point Stadium.
The Cougars (8-8-0, 2-2 SoCon) played in front of 1,081 fans as College of Charleston hosted Mt. Pleasant Recreation Night for local soccer clubs.
The first half started slow with CofC registering three shots and Winthrop striking once. Senior midfielder Steven Nagy took the first shot for the Cougars at the 14:58 mark, drilling a shot from 27 yards out that went low to the right corner before being stopped by Eagles' goalkeeper Enrique Miranda.
With 3:53 to play in the first half, Winthrop junior Miguel Casajuana struck from 16 yards out, slipping past Charleston's Clark Hankins to take a 1-0 lead for the Eagles.
Winthrop threatened to score again 11 minutes into the second period as Matt Lacey made a hard shot from 40 yards out that hit the crossbar.
The Cougars played a physical second half, earning nine corner kicks, including three in the 59th minute of action.
Junior defender Sean Flatley sent one flying from 25 yards out directly in front of the goal at the 86:41 mark but was stopped by Miranda, who tallied two saves on the evening. The win boosted Winthrop to 9-2-2 this year.
The Cougars return to Southern Conference action on Saturday as they host Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
