Elon's McFadden Wins ECU Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

McFadden Ties Event Record to Win ECU's Tournament

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Elon's Tara McFadden followed up her tournament-record tying second round of 66 with a third round 72 and finished with a 52-hole score of 211 as she won the individual title at the 2009 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate tournament on Tuesday.  Her three-round total also tied a tournament record.  McFadden's efforts helped the Phoenix to a fifth-place finish in a 15-team field which included nine top-100 programs.  
 
In Elon's three fall tournaments, McFadden now has two first-place finishes.
 
Over her three rounds, McFadden shot -4 on par three holes and led the field of 84 golfers with 12 birdies.  Her score of 211 (73-66-72) was two-under par and equaled the lowest 54-hole score in the nine-year history of the tournament, matching the mark set by Maryland's Katie Stepanek in 2005.  Her second round of 66 evened the mark set by Western Carolina's Ashley Hovda in 2005 as the lowest round recorded in the tournament.  McFadden was one of five players named to the all-tournament team.  East Carolina's Abby Bools and Ana Maria Puche, UTEP's Rosana Gomez and Mary Beth McKenna were the others.
 
Diana Davis carded a one-over par 73 in her final round of play on her way to a 21st-place tie (77-75-73) as Elon's number two player.  Kelsey Johnson (78-80-73) posted a 231 to tie for 36th while Shannon Prunty (74-77-85--236) finished in a tie for 57th.  Rounding out the Phoenix's participants was Lauren Lebak who tied for 75th following a three-round score of 246 (87-82-77).
 
Competing as an individual, Elon's Dani Mullin finished in a tie for 48th (80-79-75--234).
 
Fifty-seventh-ranked Georgia State shot a 293 in each of its three rounds to win the team title with a final tally of 879.  East Carolina, the host school which is ranked 84th nationally, placed second with an 881 (296-293-292).  Just ahead of Elon were 61st-rated East Tennessee State (3rd; 296-290-305--891) and Xavier (4th; 301-295-296--892).
 
The Phoenix finished ahead of six ranked teams ? 65th-ranked UNC Greensboro (6th; 302-301-296--899), 78th-rated James Madison (7th; 310-298-293--901), 60th-ranked Maryland (8th; 305-306-292--903), 56th-ranked Michigan (T9th; 308-300-301--909), 71st-rated William & Mary (T9th; 303-305-301--909) and 91st-ranked UTEP (11th; 308-301-301--910).
 
Elon will conclude its fall season with the three-round Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by College of Charleston.  The tournament will be played in Kiawah, S.C. beginning on October 26 and concluding on October 27.
 

 

 

 

College of Charleston Women’s Golf Finishes Second at Wendy’s Invitational

 

North Charleston, S.C. ? Freshman Ainhoa Nogales (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) tied for fourth with a two-day total of 148 to lead the College of Charleston women’s golf team to second with a 605 after the second and final round of the Charleston Southern Wendy’s Invitational held Oct. 19-20 at the Coosaw Creek Country Club in North Charleston, S.C.

 

Coastal Carolina fired a 285 in the second round to take the 19-stroke win with a 586.  Memphis came in third with a 614.

 

Chanticleer Aruka Felgueroso shot a 140 to take individual medalist honors.

 

Following Nogales and her 148 in 36 holes was Kathy Boehm (Poing, Germany) who shot a 149 to tie for sixth.  Vanessa Koechli (Greer, S.C.) tied for 10th with a 153 and tied for 17th was Anna Martin (Easley, S.C.) with her 155.  Leigh Whittaker (Baden-Baden, Germany) shot a 164 to tie for 43rd.

 

Emily Rapp (Simpsonville, S.C.)  and Courtney Brink (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) competed as individuals with Rapp tying for 22nd with a 157 and Brink coming in 48th with a 167.

 

The Cougars next compete at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Oct. 26-27 at Oak Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Creed shoots third consecutive 74 to lead UNCG to sixth at Lady Pirate

 

GREENVILLE, N.C. ? Kernersville, N.C. native Erica Creed carded her third consecutive round of 74 to finish tied for 11th and lead UNC Greensboro to a sixth place finish at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon at Greenville Country Club’s Classic Course.

 

Annelie Weimenhog, a senior from Kattarp, Sweden, had the Spartans’ low round of the day with a 73 to move into a Top 20 finish, tying for 18th place. She rallied from an opening round 80 to shoot a 71 on Monday afternoon and a 73 on Tuesday to close out at 224.

 

Elon’s Tara McFadden shot a final round 72 to win the tournament, tying the tournament’s 54-hole record at 211. She was two shots better than East Carolina’s Abby Bools, who also shot 72 on Tuesday. UNCG’s Creed finished at 222, a season-low.

 

Georgia State, with a score of 879, won the team title by two shots over East Carolina. East Tennessee State, which began the day tied for the lead with Georgia State, finished in third, 12 shots off the lead. UNCG finished at 899 after a final round 296.

 

The Lady Pirate was the final event on the Spartans’ fall slate. The team resumes play on March 1 at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla.

Bulldog Golf Completes Wendy's Invitational

 

Charleston, S.C. - The Golf team concluded the Wendy's Invitational in 15th place on Tuesday at Coosaw Creek Country Club in Charleston, S.C. The Bulldogs finished with a team score of 697 (+129) in the two-day event, hosted by Charleston Southern University.

 

The Bulldogs' top individual, Alanna-Jean Keith, tied for 26th along with Alana Swain of Methodist University after shooting a 160 (+18). Coastal Carolina's Aruka Felgueroso finished atop the leader board with a score of 140 (-2). Olivia Jordan-Higgins, the defending champion of the event, completed the second round with a 75, putting her in second at +3 for the tournament. The Citadel's Bree Baumgartner improved on day two with an 82 to finish tied in 51st (+28). Juniors Sheri Rockefeller and Christine Clark shot a 170 and 178 respectively, while senior Natalie Flores rounded out team scoring with a 197.

 

Coastal Carolina rallied from three shots back, after day one, to eclipse the College of Charleston (605) with a 586 (+18), claiming the tournament title. Memphis (614) rounded out the top three.

 

The Citadel will take to the links on Sunday, Oct. 25 at Kiawah Island for the Edwin Watts Invite. The three-day event will conclude on Tuesday, Oct. 27 and complete results and a recap will be available following the final day of competition.
