Phoenix Knock Off Greensboro College, 4-1

ELON, N.C. - Elon freshman Shannon Foley scored a goal in each half to help lead the Phoenix women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory against visiting Greensboro College in non-conference action at Rudd Field on Wednesday evening. Juniors Brittany Hallberg and Caroline Klara each added scores as the Phoenix improved to 9-3-2 on the season. Greensboro dropped to 6-5-1 overall.
 
Elon got on the board early after earning a corner kick in the third minute of action. Rookie Liz Palmer notched her first of two assists in the contest, serving the corner in the middle of the box where Foley headed it home to give Elon a 1-0 lead at 2:08.
 
The Phoenix was quick to add to its advantage when Hallberg broke free of the Greensboro defense and slid a shot to the back right corner from about 12 yards out as Elon moved the score to 2-0 at the 11:02 mark.
 
Elon had several more chances to increase its lead in the first 45 minutes, racking up eight shots in the opening period. The Phoenix headed to the locker room with an 8-1 advantage in shots and a two-goal lead on the scoreboard.
 
The Pride cut the Phoenix lead in half in the opening minute of the final period. Greensboro forward Cara Wilcox netted her sixth goal of the season, lofting an attempt over Elon goalkeeper Shannon Cosgrove in the 46th minute.
 
Foley cushioned the Elon lead, scoring from eight yards out off a corner kick by Palmer in the 71st minute. Palmer booted the service into the center of the box and Foley was able to touch it in the back of the net at 70:51. Palmer's assist was her team-leading seventh of the season.
 
Finally, as the clock wound down, Klara found herself one-on-one with Greensboro keeper Katie Allegro. Klara lifted her first goal of the season over Allegro to make the final tally Elon 4, Greensboro 1.
 
Twenty-six Phoenix players saw action in the contest with Cosgrove earning her first minutes in goal. Elon held a 19-3 advantage in shots, led by Hallberg's game-high six.
 
Elon will get back to Southern Conference action on Friday, October 16 when it hosts Chattanooga at 7 p.m. at Rhodes Stadium. Admission for adults is $5 while children 12 and under and Elon students and faculty and staff get in free.
