SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference announced its Athletes of the Month today for the month of December. Athletes from the following winter sports were chosen: men’s basketball, women’s basketball and wrestling. The athletes are chosen by the conference sports information directors for each sport.

 

Men’s Basketball

 

Davidson guard Stephen Curry has been named Athlete of the Month for Men’s Basketball. Curry averaged 30.8 points per game, while leading the Wildcats to a 4-1 record.

 

The junior hit the 40-point plateau twice during the month beginning with a 44-point effort against N.C. State in the Wildcats’ win over the Wolfpack, followed by a 41-point effort in Davidson’s victory over Chattanooga to open SoCon play later in the month. Curry also scored 12 points in the final minutes to beat West Virginia in Madison Square Garden, and tallied 29 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals in a victory over College of Charleston. For the month, he averaged 30.8 points, 6.8 assists, five rebounds and 2.8 steals per contest, while being named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List.

 

Also nominated for this month’s award were Appalachian State’s Isaac Butts, Chattanooga’s Stephen McDowell, The Citadel’s Demetrius Nelson, College of Charleston’s Andrew Goudelock, Elon’s Ola Atoyebi, Western Carolina’s Jake Robinson and Wofford’s Junior Salters.

 

Women’s Basketball

 

Davidson guard Alex Thompson has been named Athlete of the Month for Women’s Basketball. Thompson averaged 15.1 ppg and led the Wildcats to a perfect 4-0 start in SoCon play and a 4-3 overall record for the month.

 

The junior shot 48.1 percent from the three-point line, while averaging nearly six assists and over four rebounds. She had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.0. On Dec. 6, in a 95-75 victory over Appalachian State, Thompson set a SoCon record with nine three-pointers in the game and tied a school record with 35 points in the contest.  

 

Also nominated for this month’s award were Chattanooga’s Shanara Hollinquest, Georgia Southern’s Ashley Melson, Furman’s Lee Stephens, Western Carolina’s Brooke Johnson, UNC Greensboro’s Gini Grimsley, Samford’s Emily London, Appalachian State’s Brittany Mixon, College of Charleston’s Brooke Kotcella and Wofford’s Mahagony Williams.

 

Wrestling

 

Chattanooga 165-lb wrestler Seth Garvin has been named Athlete of the Month for Wrestling. Garvin posted a December record of 5-2 with three pins.

 

The senior started off the month with victories over opponents from Cumberland and Gardner-Webb in non-conference matches. At the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., a few days before the new year, Garvin won his first three matches, including a victory over No. 10 Trevor Stewart of Central Michigan. He has a team-high 15 individual wins so far this season.

 

Also nominated for this month’s award were Davidson’s Vitaly Radsky, VMI’s Leon Barrow, UNCG’s Chris Bencivenga, Appalachian State’s Kyle Blevins and The Citadel’s Odie Delaney.
