SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Chattanooga’s Stephen McDowell has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games December 23-January 5 the league office announced Tuesday (Jan. 6).  McDowell helped Chattanooga post a 2-1 mark over the holidays.  He averaged 25.7 points and shot over 54 percent from the field in three games.  He also connected on 20 of 33 three-point attempts as Chattanooga defeated Tennessee-Wesleyan (102-70) and Niagara (99-84) before falling to Georgia Southern (78-74).  The player of the week is selected by a vote of the league’s basketball sports information directors.

McDowell has made at least one three pointer in each of his last 34 games, the fourth longest streak in the nation.  He has made at least three triples in each of the last eight games.  McDowell scored a career-high 38 points in Chattanooga’s win over Niagara and added 14 rebounds, six assists and six steals over the three games. He is second in the league in scoring (20.5) and three-point field goal percentage (.472).  McDowell leads the conference with 4.6 made three pointers per game and is sixth in free throw percentage (.839).  

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Ryann Abraham, The Citadel’s Demetrius Nelson, College of Charleston’s Jermaine Johnson, Davidson’s Stephen Curry, Elon’s Ola Atoyebi, Georgia Southern’s Antonio Hanson, Western Carolina’s Harouna Mutombo and Wofford’s Noah Dahlman.
