Florida Atlantic 7, Wofford 0

 

BOCA RATON, Fla.- Playing shorthanded for the opening match of the season, the Wofford women’s tennis team fell to the Owls of Florida Atlantic by a 7-0 margin on Friday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. The Terriers have been bitten by the injury bug to start the season and only traveled with five players. With the loss the Terriers are 0-1 on the year while FAU improves to 1-3.

Wofford fell behind early 1-0 after dropping the doubles point. The Terriers needed to win the two remaining doubles matches to win the doubles point after defaulting at the number three position. However, Totevska and Wimmer (FAU) def Cayley Wetzig and Sabrina Smyers (WOF) 8-5 at the number one position and Mrazkova and Simone (FAU) def Haley Baird  and Abbey Cunningham (WOF) 8-3 to take the lone point.

 

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, the Terriers, still shorthanded, were unable to find a win in singles play but worked hard until the last point was played. On court two, Smyers played a tough first set but was unable to pull it out as she lost the opener 7-5. In the second set, Smyers was unable to get things going and lost the set and the match by a 7-5, 6-1 score. 

 

Perhaps the most intriguing match of the day came on court three where Baird battled Mrazkova of FAU to three sets. Baird only needed one service break to take the opening set 6-4, but Mrazkova followed suit in the second and used one service break to take the second set 7-5. The third set was played as a match tiebreaker in which Baird fell ten points to six.

 

 

College of Charleston 7, Coastal Carolina 0

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team defeated Coastal Carolina, 6-1 today in the team's 2009 dual match home opener at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

 

With the win, the Cougars improve to 1-1 on the season, while Coastal Carolina falls to 0-1.

 

The Cougars started things off with a sweep of doubles play, earning a point. In singles, the Cougars won five of six matches. 

 

In the number one spot, Link Leskosky earned a three set win (4-6, 6-1, 1-0).  After another three set win by Laura Borza at number two (6-3, 4-6, 6-2), Caroline Newman, Kinsey Casey and Keely Mulligan were straight set winners in the three, five and six spots, respectively. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team defeated Coastal Carolina, 6-1 today in the team's 2009 dual match home opener at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

Middle Tennessee 4, Chattanooga 3

 

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Middle Tennessee Friday evening at the Hixson Racquet Club.

 

Chattanooga, 2-2, won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Shaina Singh and Emily Hangstefer won their doubles match at the top spot 8-6 over Marietta Bigus and Anna Djananova while Jennemieke van der Veek and Charlotte Bossy won at No. 3 by an 8-5 margin.

 

In singles play, Bossy dropped her match at No. 4 6-1, 6-4 to MTSU’s Taylor Coffey and Natalie Araya defeated van der Veek 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 to put the Blue Raiders (1-0) on top 2-1. Bigus claimed a win at the No. 2 position over UTC’s Hangstefer giving MTSU a 3-1 lead.

 

Senior Beata Knizat closed to gap to a 3-2 margin with her win at No. 5 over Alex Dachos 7-6(5), 7-5. She was down 5-2 in the second set and mounted a comeback winning the next five games for the win.

 

Singh tied it 3-3 with a win at No. 1 over Andrea Herrera. After trailing After trailing in the match, she came from behind to get her third win of the year at No. 1. She was shutout in the first set 6-0 and won the second set 7-6(5) then closed the deal with a 6-3 win in the third set.

 

The deciding match would be won by Middle Tennessee at No. 6 in three sets. Wishing battled it out falling 7-5 in the first set before coming back to take the second 6-3. However, she would not hold on as Djananova claimed a 7-5 third set win for the victory.
