DAVIDSON, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro wrestling team moved to 3-1 in the SoCon after defeating Davidson, 34-3, on Thursday night in Southern Conference action.  The Spartans won nine out of ten matches, including four of those by major decision and one by pin, to defeat the Wildcats.

 

Senior Joe Sheffield got the Spartans started with a 15-3 major decision over Charlie Wolff at 285 pounds.  Mitchell Johnson followed with an 11-4 decision against Ben Altman to extend the Spartan lead to, 7-0.

 

Casey Boyle stretched the lead to 10-0 in favor of the Spartans at 133 pounds.  After being tied 5-5 after regulation, Boyle was able to takedown Alex Radsky in overtime to secure a 7-5 decision.  Chris Bencivenga kept the momentum rolling as he scored a 15-4 major decision over Vitaly Radsky at 141 pounds.

 

At 149 pounds, Ben Wilmore recorded a narrow 8-6 decision to make the score, 17-0, in favor of the visitors. Andrew Saunders used a couple of takedowns to defeat Joe McGinley, 11-0, by major decision at 157 pounds.

 

Victor Hojilla kept the perfect match going for the Spartans after he scored an 11-2 major decision against Tyler Mullen at 165 pounds.  The Wildcats scored their only win of the night at 174 pounds as Kevin Cook defeated Brett Miller by a narrow 4-3 score.

 

Mikal McKee was able to get UNCG back on track by defeating Sam O'Hair, 7-6, at 184 pounds.  Ryan Sughrue capped off a great night for the Spartans in the final match of the evening.  Just 33 seconds into the second period, Sughrue pinned Jorge Estrada to make the final team score, 34-3.

 

UNCG will return home next week for the first of four straight non-conference duals, when it hosts Liberty on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
