SoCon Announces Women's Athletes of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Appalachian State track athlete Meg Gaffney and College of Charleston field athlete Emily Smith have been named this week’s Southern Conference Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets from Jan. 21-28, the league office announced Thursday. The voting is done by the league’s head track and field coaches.

 

Gaffney, a senior graduate student, won the mile race at the UNC Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., Saturday in a time of 4:58.81.

 

Smith, a freshman, finished tied for first in the high jump at the UNC Classic by jumping 5’-6”. The first-place finish was the second meet in a row in which Smith had tied for first. The Rock Hill, S.C., native is already the school record holder in the event.

 

Also nominated were Furman track athlete Brittany Johnson and Appalachian State field athlete Shea Snow.
