CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Following a season in which she clearly set herself apart from her fellow freshman, College of Charleston middle blocker Elyse Chubb (Peachtree City, Ga.) has garnered another major honor as she was named one of 16 “Rising Stars” nationwide by Collegiate Volleyball Update. She is the only Southern Conference player to be so recognized.
The 6-0 freshman had a record-setting campaign in first year of collegiate competition as she notched nine marks in the College of Charleston record book. Chubb posted the highest single match hitting percentage in team history with a .765 performance against Western Carolina on November 15 and the most block assists with 13 vs. UNC Greensboro in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals on a week later on November 22. The latter also was the second highest overall block total, missing the record of 14 by one.
For single season records, she finished fourth in blocks per set (1.33), fifth in hitting percentage (.360) and block assists (125) and sixth in total blocks (145). Her marks for hitting percentage and blocks per set each rank as the second highest for a career and placed her 22nd and 31st, respectively, in the NCAA National Rankings. She led the Southern Conference in both categories.
While an impressive accolade for Chubb, the recognition by Collegiate Volleyball Update is far from her first honor of the season. Following an outstanding performance throughout the season, she was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, the third straight for the College of Charleston, was recognized as a Second-Team All-Southern Conference performer and named to the All-Freshman Team. She also earned All-Tournament honors as one of the top players in the Southern Conference Tournament and collected on Player of the Week honor.
Chubb’s selection marks the first time a College of Charleston player has been recognized by Collegiate Volleyball Update.
