Sophomore guard scored a career-high 27 points against Davidson

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Appalachian State sophomore guard Frances Hernandez has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for all games from January 20-26.

Making her first start in more than a month Saturday at Davidson, Hernandez responded by scoring a career-high 27 points to lead the Mountaineers to a 77-57 win against the then-third place Wildcats. The Forest City, N.C., native connected on 8-of-11 attempts from the floor and 5-of-6 three-pointers. She also registered four rebounds and two steals.

The player of the week is selected by a vote of the league’s women’s basketball sports information directors.

Other top performers during the week were Western Carolina’s Brooke Johnson, Samford’s Emily London, Chattanooga’s Erin Ogan, College of Charleston’s Tonia Gerty and Georgia Southern’s Ashley Melson.
