Furman 59, UNC Greensboro 54
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sophomore Jordan Miller scored a team-high 19 points as Furman downed UNC Greensboro 59-54, to notch its first Southern Conference victory of the season Monday evening on Carolina First Court at Timmons Arena.
The Paladins improved to 3-15 overall and 1-8 in SoCon play while UNC Greensboro slipped to 3-15 overall and 2-7 in the league.
The Spartans connected on 40 percent of its field goal attempts while holding the Paladins to 36 percent shooting from the floor, but Furman outscored UNCG by 11 points at the foul line. The Paladins made 18-of-27 free throws on the night, including 12-of-17 in the second half. UNC Greensboro made just seven of its 20 attempts at the charity stripe to drop its third straight game.
Damian Eargle led UNCG with 12 points, while Mikko Koivisto added 11 for the Spartans.
Miller was 7-of-12 from the floor and 3-for-5 beyond the arc while Bryson Barnes reached double figures for the second straight game with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line.
Tied 18-18 with under six minutes to go in the first half, Furman reeled off a 10-0 run behind seven points from Miller to open up a 28-18 advantage with 1:27 left in the half. The Paladins built a 15-point second half advantage, but the Spartans trimmed the lead to four on several occasions before Barnes and Justin Dehm capped the game with a pair of free throws each in the final 3:10.
Ben Stywall added 14 rebounds to go with nine points to help UNCG to a 43-36 advantage on the boards. Stywall also tallied a team-high four assists in the loss.
Wofford 74, Elon 71 (OT)
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford College men’s basketball team needed overtime, but defeated Elon 74-71 on Monday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers were down eight with five minutes to go and sent the game to overtime with two free throws by Tim Johnson. Junior Salters then scored nine of the Terriers’ ten points in overtime for the win.
Wofford is 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference, while Elon is 5-12 overall and 2-7 in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by Junior Salters with 20 points, while Tim Johnson had a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Noah Dahlman added 18 points. The Phoenix was led by Ola Atoyebi with 17 points and Monty Sanders with 15 points. Three Elon players had four rebounds each.
The Terriers were able to take a lead at 29-28 after a basket from Tim Johnson with 5:17 left in the first half, however Elon was able to take a 37-34 lead at the break. The Phoenix shot 55 percent from the floor and from three-point range in the first half.
Elon jumped out to an eight point lead (44-36) at the 16:09 mark of the second half. A three pointer by T.J. Douglas at 8:59 gave the Phoenix their largest lead of the night at 57-48. Wofford battled back, but the lead was still eight with 5:32 on the clock at 60-52. Then, Noah Dahlman went on a 6-0 run and Junior Salters added a lay-up to tie the game at 60-60 with 2:34 remaining. Elon was up two with twenty seconds left, but Tim Johnson knocked down two free throws to tie the game. The Phoenix missed a shot at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Overtime began with a missed three by the Phoenix and after the rebound Wofford took the lead on a bucket from Junior Salters. The score was tied at 68 each, but then Elon took the lead with a basket from Terrance Birdette. Salters added two free throws to tie the game again at 70 all.
Elon’s Chris Long made one of two free throws, and then Salters took it to the basket for two and a free throw for a 73-71 lead with just 57 seconds on the clock. The Phoenix missed a three and Wofford’s Tim Johnson grabbed the rebound. Brad Loesing then added a free throw for a three point lead. After a final three attempt missed, Wofford had the 74-71 victory.
The Citadel 70, Samford 45
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Cameron Wells scored 20 points, leading four of The Citadel's players in double figures in a 70-45 win over Samford on Monday night.
Zach Urbanus added 16 points, Demetrius Nelson had 13 and Austin Dahn chipped in with 12 for The Citadel (11-10, 6-4 Southern Conference). John Brown grabbed 12 rebounds.
Andy King led Samford (10-9, 5-5) with 12 points and Bryan Friday had 10.
The Citadel shot 52.9 percent from the field (27 of 51) in the game compared to just a 31.9 percent mark (15 of 47) for Samford, and hit 12 of 25 3-pointers.
Samford hit just 6 of 32 from long range.
The Citadel jumped out to a 10 point halftime lead, and sealed the win by outscoring Samford 37-22 in the second half.
