Chattanooga men and women compete at Blue Raider Classic
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- Aneli Uys finished first in the 800-meter run and Chris Berry was second in the Mile Run as the Mocs opened the Indoor Track season at the Blue Raider Classic hosted by Middle Tennessee Saturday afternoon.
Uys took first place in the women’s 800 run with a time of 2:18.74, topping the second place finisher by a narrow .64 margin. Berry finished the race in a time of 4:17.79, just .33 seconds off the top place time.
In the women’s 400-meter dash, Lauren Anderson took third in her heat with a time of 1:00.95. Sabrina Lefort placed third overall in the women’s 3000-meter run with a time of 5:10.97 and Jordyn Radke was right behind in fourth with a time of 10:54.66.
In the women’s Mile Run, Shelley Taylor finished with a time of 5:10.97 and Tara Gietema was just behind at 5:13.19. The Lady Mocs were third in the 4x400-yard relay with a time of 4:11.40.
In the men’s races, Buster Skrine finished second in the fifth heat of the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.58 followed by Chris Harris-Lewis in third with a time of 6.68. Brian Southerland was second in the second heat in a time of 6.60.
Michael Danehy was fourth overall in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 51.50 and Blake Ketron was third overall in the men’s 800 run with a time of 1:57.14. Matt Baltimore was fifth in the 3000 run finishing with a time of 9:30.46 while the men’s relay placed fourth with a time of 3:33.90 in the 4x400 relay.
Former Chattanooga distance runner and Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year, Lanni Marchant, took first in the 3000 run with a time of 10:15.46.
The Mocs will return to action Feb. 7 at the Rod McCravey Memorial hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

UNC Greensboro men and women compete at Liberty Open
LYNCHBURG, VA ? The UNC Greensboro track team recorded 12 top 10 finishes, highlighted by a fourth place finish from Andrew Clyne in the 1000-meter run, to conclude action at the Liberty Open on Saturday.
The Spartan men recorded six top 10 finishes on the day. Sophomore Andrew Clyne led the way with a fourth place finish in the 1000 run with a time of 2:38.31 finishing less than four seconds behind winner Desmond Wigann from Winston-Salem State. Lincoln Bennett and Brian Carrington also had as good finish in the 1000 run, as they finished eighth and ninth respectively.
UNCG also had a great showing in the 4 x 800-meter relay. The ?C’ team finished in second place with a time of 8:12.82. The ?B’ and ?A’ teams also had great finishes by finishing fourth and fifth.
On the women’s side, sophomore Tiffany Garber freshman Kerry Hartman recorded the top finishes of the day. Garber took sixth place in the mile run with a time of 5:21.59, while Hartman finished in sixth place in the 1000 with a time of 3:09.37. Emily Vasquez also had a good finish in the mile run after finishing in tenth place after running a time of 5:33.77.
The 4 x 800 relay team also found success on the women’s side. The ?C’ squad took second place with a time of 10:19.14 and the ?A’ team finished just behind them in third with a time of 10:20.82. The UNCG ?B’ team finished in fourth with a time of 10:54.34.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend when they head to Johnson City, TN for the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State.

Wofford men and women compete at UNC Classic
Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Wofford men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed at the 2009 Eddie & Joe Smith UNC Classic hosted by the Tar Heels of North Carolina. The event was calculated based on individual results and not team scoring.
Elias Conits had the best showing of the day for the Terriers as he finished just one one-hundreth of a second off the Wofford school record finishing with a time of 7.11 in the 60-meter dash. The time of 7.11 placed Conits 16th out of 58 runners in the event. Freshman Mavrick Harris had a good showing in his first collegiate indoor track meet as he finished with a time of 9:34.84, better than a thirty second improvement from high school, in section three of the men’s 3000-meter run.
Senior Josh Shumaker also had a solid meet for the Terriers finishing with a time of 16:50.90 in section two of the men’s 5000-meter run. Shumaker’s time placed him in the middle of the event finishing 17 out of 25 runners and just 19 seconds off a top ten finish.
Kari Harris had a time of 21:04.85 to finish in 14th in the women’s 5000 run. In the women’s one-mile run, freshman Caroline Burdette finished 41st with a time of 5:57.22.
The Terriers will return to the indoor stage on Friday as they travel to East Tennessee State for a two day meet in Johnson City, TN.
Georgia Southern women compete at UNC Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Georgia Southern track & field team kicked off its 2009 indoor season with a strong performance in the UNC Classic on Saturday. The Lady Eagles had three top-5 finishes on the day.
The Lady Eagles finished fifth in the distance medley event with a time of 13:43.76.
Jasmine Lightning (Dacula, Ga.) gave Georgia Southern its second top-5 finish of the day. She placed fourth in the high jump.
Demetrise Anthony (Manchester, Ga.) helped the Lady Eagles continue their fine day with a fourth place finish in the Long Jump.
For the Lady Eagles, Courtney Ware (Indianapolis, Ind.) made the first finals' appearance of the day and finished 35th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.01.
Ashley Bush-Hardy (Fayetteville, Ga.) gave Georgia Southern its first top-20 finish. She ran the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:00.32.
Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) followed Bush-Hardy's performance with a 15th place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.23.
Georgia Southern's 4x400-meter relay team finished sixth in the event with a time of 4:01.66.
Sarah Herndon (Statesboro, Ga.) got her career off to a good start with a seventh place finish in the weight throw.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) finished 26th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:40.17.
Leah Bradley (McDonough, Ga.) ran the 1 mile in a time of 6:09.91 which was good enough for 42nd place.
The Lady Eagles return to action Friday at the Niswonger Classic in Johnson City, Tenn.
Furman men and women compete at UNC Classic
Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Furman men's and women's track teams opened the Indoor Track & Field season at the UNC Classic on the campus of the University of North Carolina on Saturday. Eight Paladins earned a top-10 finish in their respective events.
Senior Patrick Morgan ran a personal-best 8:23.11 in the 3,000-meter run, good for a first-place finish in the event. He bettered his previous time by nearly nine seconds.
Freshman Lee Gilmer had a strong showing in both the 800-meter and the mile run. The rookie came in seventh overall in the 800, crossing the finish line in 1:56.58. His time of 4:23.45 earned him fifth place in the mile.
Seniors Alex Plasencia and Joseph Tenini finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 5,000m run. Plasencia posted a mark of 15:33.19 and Tenini recorded a time of 15:53.86.
On the women's side, Brittany Johnson finished first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:26.20, bettering her own personal best of 19:17.75 by over 50 seconds. Freshman Chloe Kowalski also performed well in the 5,000, crossing the finish line in fourth place with a mark of 18:38.24.
Sophomore Monique Ositelu was the final top-10 performer for the Paladins, earning a 10th-place finish in the 800 run with a time of 2:24.61.
The Paladins continue competition next weekend at East Tennessee State.
Davidson men compete at UNC Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by Thad Sieracki’s third-place finish in the mile run, the Davidson men's track & field team recorded five top tens at the season-opening UNC Classic on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Sieracki ran a 4:21.95 in the finals for the first indoor podium finish of his career. Teammate Peter Bruton came in 12th place with a time of 4:28.71. Bruton also added an eighth-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a personal-best mark of 9:04.48.
In the 5,000-meter run, a trio of 'Cats recorded top-20 marks, led by Charlie Schmitt's time of 9:04.48, which was good for fifth place. He was joined by Blake Evitt, who came in 11th, covering the 5K in a time of 15:57.15. Freshman Ian Tupper recorded a 16th-place mark in his first career indoor meet, finishing in 16:14.38.
The Wildcats' successes were not limited to the track, as senior captin Will Funderburg came in eighth place in the shot put competition. Funderburg, who is the school record holder in the event, had a top throw of 13.65 meters to get him the top-ten finish.
Up next for the Wildcats will be a trip to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete in the Niswonger Invitational on the campus of East Tennessee State University. The two-day meet will take place on Jan. 30-31.
Davidson women compete at UNC Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Wildcat women's track and field team returned to action, competing at the Eddie and Joe Smith UNC Classic Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
Senior Caroline Sanker finished fourth in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:16.45, and classmate Emily King placed fifth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:45.66.
Continuing strong performances in the distance events, freshman Jane Gay finished 18th in the mile with a time of 5:29.80.
Freshman Danielle Wright and senior Kim Colley turned in solid efforts for the 'Cats in the sprints. In the 200-meter run, Colley finished 37th in a time of 27.11 and Wright placed 38th with a time of 27.15. Wright also finished 33rd in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:01.96, and Colley was 34th with a time of 1:02.22.
Freshman Brooke Senken placed 32nd in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:31.27.
The Wildcats will return to action on Jan. 30, when they travel to the Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Citadel men and women compete at UNC Classic
Chapel Hill, N.C. ? The Citadel track and field team had huge success as the Bulldogs had 10 top-10 finishes for their season-opener at the UNC Classic in the Eddie Smith Field House.
Emily Green placed sixth in the weight throw marking 13.05 meters and the women’s distance medley team ran for a fourth place finish with a time of 13:36.90.
Brillyance Gilchrist-Poteat, Francesca McCrary, Erinn Carter and Lauren Fleming ran the 4x400-meter relay and finished 13th with a time of 4:23.69.
In other women’s action, Sarah Stierwalt ran for a time of 11:50.17 in the 3,000-meter run for 27th place and Megan Jenkins finished 28th with a time of 5:38.61 in the mile run.
On the men’s side, Brendan Kight, Jamel Brown, Frank Dioguardi and Chris Fallis ran the distance medley for second place, out of six teams, with a time of 10:43.35.
Quintin Turner posted 14.16 meters in the shot put for third place and finished fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 13.11 meters.
Freshmen Aaron Overton marked 1.88 meters in the high jump for fifth place and Zach Johnson also finished fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.37.
Brian Baize tied for sixth in the pole vault marking 4.00 meters while James Harris marked 1.83 meters in the high jump for ninth place.
2008 Southern Conference Champion Jamel Brown finished for eighth place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.29.
The Bulldogs will look for more success as they head back to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Carolina Classic on Jan. 30-31.
College of Charleston women compete at UNC Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The College of Charleston women’s track and field team took part in the Eddie and Joe Smith UNC Classic on Saturday.
Top performers on the day for the Cougars included Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C.) who tied for first in the high jump with a 1.68-meter effort and Erin Stoddard (Maudlin, S.C.) who placed second in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:28. The time was a personal best for Stoddard.
Also, the team of Emily Nagle (Annapolis, Md.), Mary Zolga (Raynham, Mass.), Alyssa D'Orazio (Haddonfield, N.J.), and Grace Loba (Orean, Va.) were victorious in the distance medley, in a time of 12:44.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, Jan. 30th when they compete at Niswonger Invitational on the campus of East Tennessee State University.
Appalachian State men compete at UNC Classic
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's track and field had another solid showing over the weekend as the squad competed at both the North Carolina Classic and the Liberty Open.
At the UNC Classic, freshman DeSean Pearce placed 13th overall in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.11.
In the 200-meter and 400-meter runs, John Svoboda had the top spots for the Black and Gold, finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Dennis Moore also was strong in the 200, taking home 10th with a time of 22.93.
Nick O'Keefe led ASU in the 800-meter and mile runs, placing 15th and 10th the events.
Appalachian continued with its dominance in the distance events as Josh Houser, Phil Mitchell and Bud Galloway notched the fifth through seventh place spots in the 3000-meter run and Asmeron Desta finished first in the 5000-meter run, with Mike Walker and Alec Meyer placing fourth and seventh.
Daniel Neal took home seventh in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.26, while Phillip Bush was 11th, finishing the race in 8.51.
Darius Purcell finished fifth in the high jump on the afternoon, jumping 6-8, while Ryan Twiford and Mike Wilson grabbed the second and fifth place spots in the pole vault.
In the long jump, Ricky Harris earned the runner-up spot, leaping 23-00.00, and in the throwing events, Malcolm Styers paced Appalachian, finishing third in the shot put and second in the weight throw, with Tim Daly placing ninth in the weight throw.
Heptathletes Matt Boruff, Jake Goodchild and Matt Pfingst all competed at the Liberty Open on Saturday and were quite impressive.
Boruff finished second in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.66, and captured first in the pole vault, vaulting 14-7.25, recording a new personal record and keeping him at third on ASU's all-time list in the event. Goodchild finished third in the pole vault and Pfingst sixth, both also recording new pr's and etching their name in the record books. Goodchild's vault moved him into fourth on ASU's all-time list in the heptathlon pole vault and Pfingst's performance placed him at sixth on the all-time list.
In the final heptathlon standings, Boruff won the runner-up spot, recording 4840, setting a new Appalachian school record and shattering the previous school record he held of 4720 points. Goodchild's and Pfingst's outings were good enough to place them at fifth and sixth all-time in the heptathlon for ASU.
The Apps return to action Friday January 30, as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to compete at the East Tennessee Niswonger Invitational.
Appalachian State women compete at UNC Classic
BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's track and field was dominant Saturday at their second home meet of the season as six Mountaineers captured first place finishes and numerous others posted solid showings to start the 2009 season.
Kiara Crutchfield paced the Apps in the 55-meter hurdles, grabbing the runner-up spot with a time of 8.48, while Michelle Brutus finished right behind Crutchfield with a fourth place finish.
Ashley McKiver and Crystal Dukes were strong in the 55 dash, with McKiver finishing third and Dukes seventh.
Junior Danielle Thorpe swept the jumping events, taking home first in both the long and triple jump, leaping 18-6 in the long jump and 40-00.75 in the triple. Crutchfield was strong in the long jump as well placing third with a leap of 17-9.5.
In the high jump, Rebecca Hazeltine followed up with her career-best performance in the Appalachian Invite in December, finishing first in the high jump Saturday with a jump of 5-5.75.
In the throwing events, Lily Tallent posted a personal best throw of 41-10.50 in the shot put, moving her into eighth on ASU's all-time list in the event. Whitney Smyre had a strong showing as well, finishing second in the shot put with a throw personal best throw as well of 41-2.50, placing tenth on ASU's all-time list in the event. Smyre also took home first in the weight throw, with a throw of 51-9.75.
Kala Robertson grabbed a third place finish in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3:11.24 pacing the Black and Gold in the distance events, while Melissa Kopec was sixth in the 800-meter and Stephanie Chapman placed fifth in the mile. Kopec's time of 2:25.66 in the 800 broke and eight year old Appalachian Holmes Center Record previously held by Katie Sujkowski. With Robertson's time in the 1000-meter run she cracked into ASU's all-time list in the event, moving into ninth place.
Rounding out the competition, Shea Snow captured first in the pole vault with a vault of 11-11.75, while Ashley Beale finished third vaulting 11.-5.75.
ASU continues with its 2008-09 campaign as they head to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete at the North Carolina Invitational Saturday January 24.
