College of Charleston 88, Appalachian State 80
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Sophomore Andrew Goudelock scored a career-high 33 points and the College of Charleston hit 9-of-10 free throws over the final 32 seconds en route to an 88-80 Southern Conference win over Appalachian State before 3,808 at Carolina First Arena on Thursday.
With the win, Charleston’s fifth in a row, the Cougars improved to 15-3 overall and 7-1 in league play. The Mountaineers fell to 6-10 and 3-5. The Cougars play at The Citadel on Saturday at 3 p.m. on SportSouth. Appalachian State plays host to Western Carolina at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
Goudelock, whose previous best night was a 27-point effort at UNC Wilmington in his first game as a freshman, tallied 14 points in the first half as Charleston grabbed a 46-37 lead at intermission.
After the Cougars built a 61-44 lead with 15:55 left, ASU’s Ryann Bermudez hit a 3-pointer, a driving layup and a pair of free throws that cut the margin to 64-55 with 11:50 remaining.
Bermudez’s 3-pointer with 57 seconds left cut Charleston’s advantage to 79-74. Marcus Hammond hit one-of-two free throws, and Donavan Monore and Tony White, Jr. hit four free throws for the Cougars down the stretch to secure the win. White has hit his last 25 free throw attempts.
Goudelock, who hit 12-of-15 field goal attempts including six 3-pointers, became the first Cougar to reach the 30-point plateau since Dontaye Draper scored 38 points in Charleston’s 89-87 overtime win over the Mountaineers on March 2, 2007 in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament (51 games).
White, Jr. finished with 13 points, while Dustin Scott added 12. Donald Sims paced the Mountaineers with15 points, while Bermudez had 14.
For the game, Charleston shot 55 percent from the floor, including 62 percent in the second half with they connected on 13-of-21 attempts. Charleston hit 11-of-21 3-point tries for the game. ASU shot 45 percent for the game (26-58), including a 50-percent clip (13-26) in the second half.
Davidson 83, Furman 43
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson held Furman to 13 second-half points, and Stephen Curry netted a game-high 30 points as the Wildcats cruised to an 83-43 Southern Conference victory over the Paladins Wednesday night before a capacity crowd at John M. Belk Arena.
It was the Wildcats' 38th straight conference win and their 25th consecutive victory at Belk Arena.
The 'Cats' defense put pressure on Furman all night long, and the Paladins managed just four points through the first 17:10 of the second half. Furman (2-14, 0-7 SoCon) shot 4-of-23 in the frame and 32 percent for the game.
The Wildcats (15-3, 8-0 SoCon) also forced 22 turnovers while only committing seven. It was the ninth time this season Davidson has held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field.
Curry was 12-of-18 from the floor and 6-for-10 on 3-pointers. He added to his school record-tying 24th career 30-point effort with five steals and five assists, while not committing a turnover in 32 minutes of action. All-time leading scorer John Gerdy also had 24 career contests with 30-plus points.
Curry also moved into the top-25 in the NCAA Division I record books for career 3-pointers. He is tied with former Georgia Tech sharpshooter Dennis Scott with 351.
Justin Dehm led Furman with 12 points, as he connected on 3-of-6 shots from beyond the arc. Bryson Barnes came off the bench and tallied six points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Paladins. Furman held a 30-29 advantage in rebounds.
Will Archambault had his fourth double-digit scoring effort in the last five games for Davidson with 13 points, including 3-of-5 from long distance. Andrew Lovedale anchored the defense, recording his second consecutive game with three blocks, including back-to-back swats on two possessions, and added a team-high seven rebounds and five points.
Steve Rossiter scored nine points, and Max Paulhus Gosselin added eight. Justin Dehm led Furman with 12 points to go along with four assists.
Davidson began the game on a 16-2 spurt, running out to an 8-0 lead before Furman scored its first basket at the 15:36 mark of the first half. Davidson answered with back-to-back steals on the following two possessions, both of which were converted into fast break dunks on the other end.
After the Paladins cut the lead down to four, Davidson countered with 10 unanswered points to stretch the advantage to 35-23 with five minutes to play. The 'Cats continued to pull away, outscoring Furman 18-4 in the paint, and knocking down seven 3-pointers as a team to go into the break with a 51-30 cushion.
