SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Western Carolina track athlete Janet Carothers and Appalachian State field athlete Rebecca Hazeltine have been named this week’s Southern Conference Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week for all meets from Dec. 5-Jan. 18, the conference office announced Wednesday. The athletes of the week are selected by the league’s track and field head coaches.

At the Appalachian Invitational on Dec. 5, Carothers broke the ASU Holmes Center record in the 400-meter run with a time of 55.63 seconds. The sophomore also ran a leg of the winning 4 x 400-meter relay that also broke the Holmes Center record in a time of 3:48.16.

Hazeltine won the high jump at the Appalachian Invitational with a leap of 5’8”, which was a personal best and the third best jump in Mountaineer history. The Weddington, N.C., native also broke the meet and Holmes Center record’s with the jump. 

Also nominated this week was Appalachian State track athlete Kiara Crutchfield.
