Wofford and Elon In Action Sunday

ATLANTA, Ga. - Playing their second nationally ranked team in as many days, the Wofford men's tennis teams was defeated by the 58th ranked Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech on Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga. 7-0.  Wofford currently stands at 0-2 on the year while Georgia Tech improves to 2-0.

 

Although the Terriers were defeated, Head Coach Rod was pleased with his team's performance against a strong Georgia Tech Squad.  "Georgia Tech played well and has a very strong team.  I am glad we played this match today as we are better coming out of it.  I am definitely looking forward to the future with this team and seeing what we can do," noted Ray.

 

The Terriers fell behind early 1-0 after Georgia Tech swept all three doubles matches.  The freshmen duo of Stuart Robertson fell to the Yellow Jacket tandem of Ryan Smith and Miguel Muguruza 8-5 on court number one.  Scott Collins and Paul Bartholomy fell on court two by an 8-0 margin while Tinus van Wyk and Alan Donald was defeated on court three 8-4.

 

In singles play, Georgia Tech took five out of six matches in straight sets.  However, Bartholomy lost in a tough two set match falling to Smith 7-5, 7-6(4) at the number four position.  The most intriguing match of the day came on court two where Wofford freshman Danny Manlow took Eliot Potvin to three sets.  Manlow dropped the opening set 6-4 but bounced back to take the second set in a tiebreaker by a 7-6 (5) score. Potvin would win the third set and take the match 6-4, 6-7(5) and 6-2.

 

 

Elon Competes at Duke Invitational

 

DURHAM, N.C. ? Elon’s 49th-ranked duo of Damon Gooch and Philip Nemec upset No. 20 North Carolina’s fifth-ranked team of Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman 8-5 to take over sole possession of first place in the doubles standings after the second day of the three-day Duke Invitational men’s tennis tournament Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix also received singles victories by Chase Helpingstine, Carlin Murray, Alberto Rojas and Cody Stauffer MacDowell.

After posting the first victory over top-five competition by an Elon doubles team, the Gooch/Nemec combo improved to 7-1 on the year dating back to the fall tournament season. The Gooch/Nemec combo (10 points) ? currently ranked No. 14 in the NCAA’s South Region ? has a two-point edge over the Tar Heels’ second-place pairing of Andrew Crone and Zach Hunter (eight points). Monday’s matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

In other doubles action, the Phoenix’s Clark Howell and Oscar Podlewski dispatched UNC’s Cameron Ahari and Kyle Baker 8-5. Meanwhile, North Carolina’s Andrew Crone and Zach Hunter slipped past Elon’s Chase Helpingstine and Alberto Rojas 9-8 and the Tar Heels’ Luke Mojica and Alex Rafiee ousted the Phoenix’s Carlin Murray and Cody Stauffer MacDowell 8-3.

Players from Elon and North Carolina met in eight singles matches with each team winning four. For the Phoenix, Helpingstine conquered Mojica 6-1, 6-4, Murray rallied past Baker 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, Rojas knocked off Hunter 7-5, 6-1 and Stauffer MacDowell toppled Ahari 6-2, 6-4. For the Tar Heels, No. 59 Fogleman out-dueled Podlewski 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, Crone overcame Nemec 0-6, 6-2, 6-3, Rafiee staved off Kevin Beard 6-3, 6-3 and Taylor Meyer bested Alex Crockford 6-1, 6-1.
