WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Appalachian State University Women's tennis dropped the 2009 season opener 7-0 at Wake Forest Saturday afternoon.

Monica Tomas dropped the No. 1 singles spot to Sasha Kulikova 6-1, 6-0. Kulikova is ranked No. 50 in the country. Freshman Blakely Bean played the No. 2 singles in her first ever spring match, falling 6-0, 6-0. Gisela Fernandez also played her first match at the No. 3 position, falling 6-1, 6-0 to Ryann Cutillo.

Anna Mydlowska defeated Amanda Cash at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2. Another freshman, Olivia Stannard lost to Katarina Reveche 6-0, 6-2. In the closest match of the day for the Apps, Carolina Mauch fell to Aileen Davis 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles action, Appalachian was able to win just three combined points, in the three matches. Bean and Fernandez fell at No. 1 to Kulikova and Poske 8-0, while Tomas and Stannard lost to Christian Tara and Mydlowska 8-2. At the No. 3 slot, Cutillo and Reveche defeated Lindsay King and Cash 8-1.

The Apps return to the court on Saturday Jan. 24 for the home opener against Coastal Carolina.
