SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? College of Charleston junior guard Jade Hughes has been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball player of the week for all games from January 6-12.
Hughes averaged in double-figures in scoring in two games last week with 19 points against Davidson and 14 versus Appalachian State. In a 74-71 win at previously unbeaten Davidson on Monday night, Hughes created a steal and converted the game-winning layup with 25 seconds remaining. The Spartanburg, S.C., native also averaged 5.5 assists per game, including a season-high eight in the win at ASU. She connected on 7-of-12 three-point attempts on the week and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Hughes currently ranks second in the Southern Conference in assists, averaging 4.0 per contest, and her 10.4 points per game average is 16th highest in the league.
The player of the week is selected by a vote of the league’s women’s basketball sports information directors.
Other top performers during the week were Furman’s Melissa Liebschwager, Davidson’s Mercedes Robinson, Appalachian State’s Sam Ramirez, Georgia Southern’s J’Lisia Ogburn, Samford’s Emily London, Elon’s Urysla Cotton, Chattanooga’s Erin Ogan and UNC Greensboro’s Amanda Leigh.
