College of Charleston 81, Samford 74
CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Andrew Goudelock scored 19 points and Tony White, Jr. tied his career high with seven assists as the College of Charleston held on for an 81-74 Southern Conference victory over Samford before 3,563 at Carolina First Arena on Monday.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in SoCon play. Samford fell to 6-8 and 1-4.
In the first half, the Cougars were paced by the hot hand of Goudelock, who ended the half with 13 points on 5-6 shooting from the field. Samford kept the game close throughout the half, but an 8-0 run at the five-minute mark helped the Cougars to a 42-34 lead at intermission. Dustin Scott added nine points for Charleston in the period, while White had eight points.
In the second half, the Cougars extended their lead to 52-39 with 15:52 left. Samford eventually closed the margin to 79-72 with 39.2 seconds left, but White hit a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left secured the Cougars eighth straight win over the Bulldogs.
For the game, Goudelock paced four Cougars in double figures. Antwaine Wiggins added 17 points, Scott had 16 and White tallied 14 points.
For Samford, Montgomery and Bryan Friday each finished with a game-high 20 points.
Chattanooga 76, The Citadel 70
CHARLESTON, S.C.--- In its third game in five days, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s basketball team (6-10, 2-3 SoCon) traded three-point punches outlasting The Citadel (7-9, 2-3 SoCon), 76-70 at McAlister Field House on Monday evening. The two teams combined to hit 24 three-pointers on the evening.
The Citadel got off to a hot start in the second half scoring nine of the first 11 points in the half to extend its lead to 46-38 powered by two Zach Urbanus three-pointers. The Mocs quickly answered with a 14-3 run to retake the lead, 52-49. Chattanooga held the Bulldogs without a point for 5:41 during the run.
The Mocs extended the lead to 60-54 on a Kevin Goffney layup with 6:33 to play. The Citadel closed to within 63-60 on a Bryan Streeter free throw at 4:31.
Chattanooga had another answer scoring the next five points to make it 68-60 via a Nicchaeus Doaks driving jumper and yet another Stephen McDowell three-pointer giving six at that point in the game. The Citadel answered with the Urbanus show continuing from downtown as he and Demetrius Nelson cut the Mocs lead to three at 68-65.
McDowell hit three-pointer number seven to make it 71-65, then Austin Dahn answered with a trey of his own to make 71-68 at 2:01. The teams traded defensive stops before a Keyron Sheard free throw made It 72-68 with just 34.7 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs came down but Cameron Wells, the 2008 SoCon Freshman of the Year, lost control of his dribble at 25.5 to give the Mocs the ball. After a brief scramble on the inbounds pass, Urbanus fouled McDowell with 17.6 to go who hit both to make it 74-68.
A Nelson layup made it 74-70 before Doaks coolly sank two free throws at 4.4 to seal the victory 76-70.
McDowell led all scorers with 27 points including seven three-pointers. Goffney had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Doaks and Ty Patterson chipped in 11 apiece. Khalil Hartwell tied Goffney for team high honors with seven boards as the Mocs won the battle on the glass 39-35.
The Mocs had just nine turnovers on the evening, the fewest total since six against Asbury on Dec. 21, 2007. Chattanooga hit 84.6 percent (11-13) from the free throw line in the second half which helped key the win.
Urbanus scored a career-high 24 points to go with six rebounds and three assists. Urbanus was one three-pointer of McDowell’s total with six. Nelson added 15 points and set a career high of his leading all players with 14 rebounds.
Davidson 70, Appalachian State 52
BOONE, N.C. - Poor shooting from the three-point and free-throw lines doomed Appalachian State University men's basketball in a hard-fought 70-52 loss to Davidson before a record crowd of 8,350 at the Holmes Center on Monday evening. Kellen Brand led the Mountaineers (6-7, 3-2 SoCon) with 21 points.
The Wildcats (12-3, 5-0) got on the board first with a three-pointer before Brand responded with a steal and layup. From there, Davidson went on a roll and took a 12-point lead as the Mountaineers missed their first seven three-point attempts.
The Apps went on a run of their own with nine-straight points. Isaac Butts opened the streak with a layup and Brand finished it off with a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 19-16. Butts closed out the night with 10 points and tied Eduardo Bermudez for the ASU lead with six rebounds.
Appalachian was unable to tie or take a lead in the opening 20 minutes but sank 9-of-12 two-point attempts to trail 33-30 at the intermission. Brand led the Apps with 12 first-half points while Ryann Abraham chipped in 10 with both of the team's first-half treys. Abraham was held scoreless in the second half but chipped in four rebounds and three of the team's five steals.
The first seven points of the second half and 11 of the first 14 went the Wildcats' way while Brand had the only points for Appalachian during the streak - a three-pointer from the top of the key.
From there, the Mountaineers closed the gap to as few as seven points at 44-37 with 12:54 to go in the game when Josh Hunter scored on a tip in, but the 'Cats pulled away with seven second-half treys to extend the lead to as many as 21 points.
Appalachian pulled back to within 13 with 6:28 remaining on an Butts layup but Davidson followed the bucket with an 8-0 run over a two minute period to pull away.
All-American Stephen Curry led the Wildcats attack with 16 points and six assists, despite being in foul trouble for a majority of the game. Three other 'Cats scored in double-figures as well in the game.
Brand scored his 21 on 8-12 shooting from the field and also added five rebounds. The Apps out-shot Davidson 45 percent to 44 but took 21 fewer shots in part due to the team's 17 turnovers.
Appalachian shot just 22.2 percent from behind the arc, the second lowest output of the season next to 16.7 percent against Texas. The Mountaineers can take solace in holding Curry, the nation's leading scorer at 29 points per game, to just over half his season average and third-lowest scoring output of the season. Max Paulhus Gosselin and Brendan McKillop each helped pick up the slack with three treys apiece in the contest as Davidson hit 11-of-28 in the game.
