The Citadel 4, Mount St. Mary 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Citadel women’s soccer team won 4-1 against Mount St. Mary in the Thundering Herd Nike Invitational at Sam Hood Field Sunday.
The Bulldogs were ready for action after Friday’s draw to Marshall. Amy Loughran and Jessica Stewart opened the first half with shots on goal in the first three minutes of the half. Mount St. Mary’s defense held The Citadel until the 32nd minute. RS Junior Nikki Mares headed in to score the first goal assisted by Stewart. The Bulldogs were up 1-0 going into halftime.
The Citadel sparked things up in the second half when Mares, assisted by Jessa Scott, scored after only playing five minutes. Then a minute later, Stewart scored again for the Bulldogs. The Mount continued to battle the Bulldogs until Jessa Scott scored with 17 minutes left on the clock. The Citadel was up 4-0. The Bulldogs allowed 86 minutes of shutout until Mount St. Mary scored their only goal with 3 minutes left on the clock. The Citadel improves their record 1-2-1 and Mount St. Mary drops to 0-5 for the season.
This is Mares’ first career and season goals at The Citadel. Stewart picks up her first career and season goal and assist. Game winning goalie Laura Serafino had six total saves for the game and 22 saves total for the tournament. Jessa Scott earned her first goal of the season and this is her seventh career goal.
Head Coach Bob Winch was very happy with their overall total effort in the tournament. “We had a core group that put in a solid performance through both games. We were able to score some goals and I am very proud of that. The effort was fantastic.”
College of Charleston 1, Lehigh 0
DAVIDSON, N.C.--- A first half goal by Megan Manthey, along with another shutout performance by goal keeper Erin Smith, paced the College of Charleston's women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Lehigh on Sunday afternoon at the Adidas/Davidson Soccer Tournament in Davidson, N.C
The Cougars were awarded the Davidson Tournament Championship for going 2-0 over the weekend.
With the win, the Cougars move to 6-0-0 on the year to continue their best start in program history. Lehigh falls to 1-2-1 with the loss.
"To pull out a victory like this today really shows the experience our team has," said head coach Kevin Dempsey. "We came out here today in some hot weather, against a very good Lehigh squad and hung on to win after scoring early in the match. It once again shows what kind of experience we have on this team."
In the first half, the Cougars got on the scoreboard when Manthey scored her fourth goal of the season in the 28th minute. Freshman Hope Atkinson picked up an assist on the goal, which is her second of the year.
In the second half, Lehigh had a scoring chance with four minutes left, only to have the Cougars Emily Morgan make a save on the shot after Smith was forced out of the goalie box.
With the win, Smith earns her fourth shutout victory in five starts after making a total of seven saves. After five matches, her goals against average sits at 0.40, while she has made a total of 31 saves.
The Cougars will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 13th when they host High Point at Patriots Point. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
UNC Greensboro 2, VCU 1
RALEIGH, N.C. ? Kristin Player and Katelynn Donovan each netted one goal apiece to lead the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Virginia Commonwealth in the final game of the NC State/Residence Inn North Tournament.
The Spartans (4-2-0) finished the weekend with a 2-0-0 record while Player led all Spartans with three goals for six points on the weekend. Senior Mary Kate Towne, who assisted on Donovan’s goal, finished the weekend with five points on two goals and an assist.
UNCG led the Rams (0-4-0) on the offensive front, registering eight goals to VCU’s three. Three of the Spartans eight shots were on net while the Rams managed just two shots on goal, forcing UNCG goalkeeper Kelsey Kearney to make just one save in her first collegiate start.
VCU got on the board first with a goal in the ninth minute of play.
Francesca Gioeli took a cross from Megan Flanagan and sent her shot into the bottom right corner to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead.
Player had the answer for the Spartans at the 12:59 mark, sending her shot into the left side of the net after a combination of passes between Donovan and Nicole Danford led to a cross from Danford that found its way to the feet of Player. For Danford, it was her second assist of the season, giving her six points in the early stages of the Spartans’ schedule.
Towne picked up the assist in the 64th minute when her initial shot hit the post and rebounded across the goal mouth to the feet of Donovan who netted her second goal of the season, her first game-winner.
The Spartans will return to action next weekend when they travel out to Palo Alto, California for the Stanford Invitational. UNCG will face Santa Clara on Friday evening at 7:30 pm ET before wrapping up action against host Stanford on Sunday at 5:30 pm ET.
Chattanooga 3, Lipscomb 1
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women’s soccer team netted its second victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Lipscomb in Nashville on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
“Our backs remained constant,” UTC Head Coach J.D. Kyzer said. “We are starting to find ourselves and each other. We are able to use a lot of people with many coming in and out. It’s something we’ve not been able to do in the recent past.”
Senior forward Marlee Jenkins took a feed from sophomore Serena Allen to get the Lady Mocs on the board early with a goal in the sixth minute. UTC would carry a 1-0 lead through most of the game until freshman Morgan Shelton nabbed her first collegiate goal, the game winner, on an assist from junior Chelsea Hurst with 60:34 gone in the game.
The Lady Mocs’ freshman forward D.K. Henry scored her second goal of the season, unassisted, to give Chattanooga a 3-0 cushion at the 82:26 mark. It would be the Lady Mocs largest lead of the year. Lipscomb's Brandi Bresheres squelched UTC keeper Allie Preston's bid for her third shutout on the year with a goal in the 88th minute to cut the score to 3-1.
Preston had four saves in the game for UTC while the Lady Bisons' keeper Katie Shelton had six. Chattanooga was outshot by Lipscomb 21-19 but had nine shots on goal to the Lady Bisons’ five. Lipscomb remain winless on the year at 0-4.
This was UTC’s second straight win after gaining its first victory of the season Friday evening at Austin Peay.
"It's nice to be able to see people who have not scored yet in college to get the chance," Kyzer said.
Chattanooga improves to 2-2-1 overall and will remain on the road with a non-conference match at Jacksonville State Sept. 14.
Davidson 1, Richmond 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's soccer team continued its school-record start to the 2008 campaign by staying unbeaten when they earned their third tie in a row, playing to a 1-1 draw against Richmond in the final day of the Davidson Tournament at Alumni Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
College of Charleston was awarded the tournament trophy after earning a 1-0 win over Lehigh in the first game of the day on Sunday to finish the tournament 2-0-0. Lehigh and Richmond both finished 0-1-1.
The Wildcats' 2-0-3 start this year is the best in school history after five games. The last time Davidson started the year unbeaten was 2000 when that team went 3-0-0 through the first three games. Richmond saw their record go to 3-1-1 with the tie.
Davidson grabbed the lead first, right before halftime, on junior Katharine Laco's (Bethesda, Md.) second career score. Senior co-captain Tracy McClausland (Albuquerque, N.M.) set up the goal when she dribbled to the far side of the 18-yard box where she got off a high shot from the right corner of the box. The Spiders' Andrea Young went up to block it and in doing so, the ball bounced off the cross bar to the center of the six-yard box and Laco right-footed the ball home to the near post for a 1-0 Wildcat lead at the 41:07 mark.
Richmond then turned up its intensity in the second half and it paid off when Emily Dale hit a shot from about 25-yards out in the 79th minute to knot things up at 1-all. Jessie Knight had gotten the ball past midfield and fed Dale, who was in the center of the field just outside the 18-yard box, where she struck a high shot to the top-left corner for the equalizer.
Once again, Davidson would find itself in overtime. The 'Cats were able to get off a couple of shots and picked up a corner in both overtimes, but they just could not break through in settling for the 1-1 tie.
The Spiders Kelsey Rdzanek almost ended the game early in the first overtime when her direct shot on goal in the 18-yard box sailed high over the cross bar.
For the third straight game, freshman goalie Christy Carry saw action in all 110 minutes as she record four saves. The Spiders' Young also registered four saves as Davidson placed five of its 11 shots on goal.
The Wildcats will now hit the road for two non-conference contests starting with a 3 p.m. contest against Harvard on Friday, Sept. 12. They then will take on Providence College on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12 p.m.
Arkansas 1, Samford 0 (2OT)
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. --- The Samford University soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday in the championship match of the 2008 adidas Gamecock Classic. At the JSU Soccer Field, Arkansas’ Sophie Wentz scored the game-winning goal with 2:30 remaining.
In the loss, Samford (1-4) goalkeeper Cayley Winters played 107:30 minutes of perfect soccer before Arkansas (4-1) scored its game-winner in double overtime. The Bulldogs’ senior four-year starter from Littleton, Colo., tallied a game-high five saves in the loss.
With Sunday’s victory, Arkansas earned the championship title of the 2008 adidas Gamecock Classic and extended its winning streak to three-consecutive matches. The Razorbacks concluded play in the four-team tournament with wins against Jacksonville State 4-0 and Samford 1-0.
Samford and Arkansas played a tough physical match and were scoreless until the second overtime period. At the end of regulation, the Bulldogs had attempted eight shots with two being on-goal, while the Razorbacks rattled off 13 shot attempts with six being on-goal.
Midway through the second overtime period, the match was delayed for nearly 20 minutes for an injury timeout. Prior to the delay, Samford dominated the overtime periods and maintained possession on Arkansas’ half of the field for a predominant portion of extra play.
Once play resumed in double overtime, Arkansas took its first possession and scored the game-winning goal.
On the score, the Razorbacks’ Kelly O’Connor gathered the ball at midfield and drove from right to left into Bulldog territory. She moved the ball ahead 30 yards and split a pair of Samford defenders before sending a perfectly-placed pass to Wentz.
Wentz caught up to the ball just before it reached the top of the box where she settled it at her feet and flicked it up over the goalkeeper into the net. The goal was Wentz’s first of the 2008 season. O’Connor was credited with an assist on the play.
Samford’s Amber Cress and Hilary Samuels paced the offensive attack for the Bulldogs. Both players attempted two shots and forced Arkansas’ goalkeeper Britni Williams to make diving saves.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m., as the Bulldogs continue their tour of Southeastern Conference opponents with a matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide at the UA Soccer Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Belmont 2, Western Carolina 1 (2OT)
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women’s soccer lost 2-1 in double overtime against the visiting Belmont Bruins Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
Forty-five seconds into the second overtime period, Belmont midfielder Jamie Loftis scored the golden goal, her first goal of the season, after she headed the ball into the bottom corner past Catamounts goal keeper Caitlin Williams to give the Bruins the victory.
Western Carolina falls to 1-3 on the young season meanwhile the Belmont Bruins improve to 4-1 with the double overtime victory.
“We have been incorporating to the team to play the 90 full minutes and today I thought we did a tremendous job in the first half, said Head Coach Tammy DeCesare. “But in the second half we gave a good team too many opportunities.
The Catamounts looked to be in control of the match, when two minutes into the contest a couple of upperclassmen help set the tone. Junior Nikki Collins made a terrific pass to junior Shannon Fowkes who then took a direct shot inside the box to beat the Belmont goalkeeper Sari Lin to give the Catamounts an early 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half Western Carolina had some more opportunities to increase their lead when at the 14 minute mark junior Nikki Lombardo had an excellent shot opportunity that just went high over the net. Lombardo a minute later got a wonderful cross from teammate Jaycee Patton when Lombardo fired a shot just wide left of the goal.
Western Carolina defensive unit held Belmont’s offensive attack to just one shot during the first half of play. The Catamounts out shot their opponent 5-to-1 to finish the first half of play.
Belmont came out in the second half attacking early and it paid off when seven minutes into the half a corner kick by Belmont forward Annie Musacchio went off of Western Carolina defender Jenny Matteson leg and redirected into the net for the goal. The on goal by the Catamounts gave the Bruins a tie score of 1-1.
Western Carolina had an opportunity to regain the lead, but its chance by junior Fowkes went right to keeper Lin for the easy save.
After the second half ended Western Carolina still lead 9-to-4 in shots for the entire match.
“In the second half, Belmont stepped up their level of play and we couldn’t match it,” DeCesare said. “Credit to Belmont and we just didn’t come out focused enough in the second half.”
South Carolina 2, Furman 1 (OT)
COLUMBIA, S.C. ? South Carolina’s Kim Miller converted a penalty kick in the 94th minute to give the Gamecocks a 2-1 overtime victory over Furman in the finale of the Carolinas’ Cup Sunday afternoon in Columbia, S.C.
The win improved the Gamecocks to 4-0-1 on the season while Furman fell to 2-1-1.
In the opening minutes of extra time, Furman went on the attack. Katya Gokhman received a pass in the box and appeared to be taken down from behind after beating her defender but no call was made. South Carolina gained possession just moments later and Furman was whistled for a foul in the box giving the Gamecocks a penalty which Miller finished for the game-winning goal.
“I was very proud of our effort this afternoon and disappointed that the game ended like it did,” said Furman coach Andrew Burr. “Lucy Martin created several chances for us and scored a nice goal. We are excited about returning home and building on this effort.”
South Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Kayla Grimsley headed a Natalie Aaron cross by Paladin keeper Briana da Mota in the 27th minute. Furman answered less than 10 minutes into the second half.
Martin, who had hit the cross bar in the opening 45 minutes, hammered a shot that glanced off of the bottom of the bar and into the goal at 54:23 to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams had opportunities in the final 30 minutes, but were unable to convert prior to Miller’s overtime penalty kick at 93:38. Martin and Rachel Fry were both named to the all-tournament team for the Paladins who scored a 2-1 victory over Francis Marion on Friday night.
South Carolina outshot the Paladins 15-8 on the day, including 12-5 after intermission. Mollie Patton registered two saves and earned the victory in goal for the Gamecocks. Da Mota notched four saves for Furman.
The Paladins will look to bounce back when they host UNC Asheville in a non-conference match Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Stone Stadium.
Old Dominion 6, Elon 0
NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion posted its third shutout victory of the season with a 6-0 victory over the Elon Phoenix (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon, improving to 5-0 on the season. For the second game of the weekend, ODU allowed just one shot on goal and five total shots and pestered the opponents defense, taking 18 shots with 13 on-net. Senior Shavon Knight scored two goals and had two assists, as did freshman Victoria Johnson who nailed her first career gamewinner in the 15th minute of play.
Elon hung around with the Lady Monarchs in the first half, matching the Lady Monarchs shot for shot. Each had four looks in the first half, with ODU scoring on two of the four chances. Just over 14 minutes into the game, senior Janna Pearson crossed the ball to the far post to Knight, who touched the ball across the goal mouth to Johnson for the eventual gamewinner.
Just over 21 minutes in, Knight would score her first of the match, on a give and go from Jodi Knorowski on the right side of the field. Old Dominion would take the 2-0 lead into the locker room as senior keeper Lauren Tupman made one save in the frame.
In the second half, ODU applied pressure from the outset, taking a total of 14 shots in the half, while allowing just one. In the 62nd minute, senior Katie Watson received a pass from Johnson in the box and knocked home her third goal of the season. Then, in the final ten minutes, ODU would send three more past Elon's senior goalkeeper Lizz Johnson. Ashley Kukura scored her first of the season, followed by the second goal of the game for both Knight and Johnson.
Elon was led by Alanna Winsper, who took two shots, and Alix Heinicke took the only shot on-goal for the Phoenix. Sydney Little took the loss after a two-goal, one-save first half while Lizz Johnson played the second 45 minutes giving up four goals with six saves.
Charleston Southern 2, Georgia Southern 1
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer team fell short against Charleston Southern.
“We did not seem to gel well out there. Charleston Southern is a good team and they gave us trouble today,” said Coach Hart.
The Buccaneers scored first. Briana Murphy knocked the ball into the net during the 22nd minute of play.
The Eagles responded right away. During the next minute of play Ashley Toussaint scored off a pass from Danae Kaimuloa.
“We did respond well after the first goal. Ashley and Danae played well together,” said Coach Hart.
Charleston Southern took the lead for good during the 36th minute, when Sarah Catenacci scored off a pass from Jen Vroman.
The Eagles battled hard in the second half keeping the game in reach, but where unable to tie the game up.
Lauren Santos played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles and recorded five saves.
Chelsea Kephart recorded her first shot on goal of the season. Nikki Lepper picked up a shot on goal and Jenny Anderson recorded her fourth shot on goal of the young season. Jennifer Godfrey provided aggressive defense for the Eagles.
The Eagles return to action Friday, September 12, when they travel to Macon, Ga. to face the Mercer Bears at 7:00 pm.
