Georgia Southern 2, Clemson 1
CLEMSON, S.C. ? Daniel Smith scored the Eagles’ two goals in its win over Clemson Friday night.
The Eagles (1-1-0) got on the board first when Smith scored off a pass from Jon Cox in the sixth minute.
Nathan Thorton tied the game up for the Tigers in the 24th minute of play. Smith responded and gave Georgia Southern the lead 2-1 only minutes later. Cox had two assists on the day.
Newcomer Fredrick Langseth also picked up an assist.
Joey Ralph played all 90 minutes in the cage and picked up five saves.
"He [Ralph] played very well for us. He bounced back after giving up the goal and handled himself espically well in the last 10 to 15 minutes of the game," said Coach Kennedy.
Danny Hall and Joe Magidan both had a shot in the game.
Georgia Southern picked up its first win ever against the Tigers.
"It was a great win for us. Clemson is a good team whom we respect. We had a special performance out there today. We defended well and made the most of our chances," said Coach Kennedy.
The Eagles become only the 16th team to ever beat Clemson under the lights at Riggs Field.
The Eagles continue their season opening three game road trip when they visit Campbell next Friday.
Wofford 3, High Point 2 (2OT)
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Wilson Hood scored on a diving header with just over three minutes remaining in the second overtime to lift Wofford to a 3-2 men’s soccer triumph over High Point Friday at the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va.
Junior Yakov Rubinchik set up the winning play with a cross from the end line to the far post. Hood dove towards the pass and his header tucked into the left corner for the score at 106:39.
High Point (1-1) took the early advantage at 17:55 when Karo Okiomah corralled the ball despite being surrounded by four defenders and nailed his attempt from 15 yards out past Terrier goalkeeper Joey Taylor.
Freshman Bryan Eddy would tally the equalizer for Wofford (2-1) just after halftime, at 47:19, as junior Branson Hyatt sent a free kick into the box, setting up Eddy’s one-timer past Panther goalie Michael Chesler.
The Terriers’ pairing connected again at 65:28, with Eddy feeding Hyatt for the go-ahead goal. Eddy’s short pass landed at Hyatt’s feet, which he then turned and fired a two-yard attempt past Chesler.
High Point, however, would not be denied in regulation. Kiki Gonzalez stood near the corner flag and his crossing attempt found Chris Shrum’s head. He directed the ball off the far post at 83:59.
Eddy registered one-third of Wofford’s shots with three. Six other players had an attempt each.
Scott Rojo recorded a match-high five shots, while Shrum and Okiomah each had three for the Panthers.
Wofford will conclude play in the tournament with a 2:30 p.m. Sunday match against host James Madison.
Furman 2, Bowling Green 0
Greenville, S.C. ? Andrew Krysiak and Brooks Duff each netted a goal in the final 10 minutes to help Furman to a 2-0 victory over Bowling Green on the opening day of the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational at Stone Stadium Friday evening.
The win improved the Paladins to 1-1-0 on the season while Bowling Green slipped to 0-2-0.
Krysiak received a pass from Patrick Murray and laced a shot past Falcon keeper Paul Shoemaker into the righthand corner at 80:34 to open the scoring.
“It was good to get a win tonight,” said Furman head coach Doug Allison.
“I was especially happy for Andrew to get that first goal for us.”
Duff doubled the lead less than five minutes later. Dane Roberts beat his man down the right side and played a pass back into the middle of the box.
Duff, a sophomore, had his first shot blocked, but collected the rebound and deposited his second effort from 12 yards to give Furman a 2-0 lead.
Furman had several chances to break the deadlock in the first half, but Shoemaker made a sliding save on a Krysiak effort and then denied back-to-back shots from Krysiak and Warren Creavalle to keep the match at 0-0.
The Falcons were reduced to 10 men at 53:19 when Vuk Krkeljic was issued his second yellow card and sent off. Furman managed to wrestle away the majority of possession for the rest of the match and build a final 19-5 edge in shots and 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Josh Zimmer registered the shutout for the Paladins with two saves.
Shoemaker turned away six shots in for Bowling Green.
In the day’s first match, four different Washington Huskies netted goals, including three in the second half, on their way to a 4-1 victory over the College of Charleston.
Raphael Cox opened the scoring with a low shot that deflected into the lefthand corner in the 12th minute. After the halftime break, Brent Richards and Adam Lang tallied goals at 48:08 and 49:39, respectively, to push the Huskies to a 3-0 lead.
Dylan Tucker-Gangnes, who assisted on the Lang goal, headed in a Lang cross in the 55th minute to extend the lead to 4-0.
Kareem Yearwood netted a goal at the 55-minute mark on a header to help the Cougars avoid the shutout.
Washington held a 15-6 advantage in shot attempts. Husky keeper Stephen Fung recorded the victory in net while Brendan Smith stopped three shots for the Cougars in the loss.
The Falcons face College of Charleston at 11:00 a.m. Sunday at Stone Stadium while Furman hosts Washington in the tournament finale at 1:30 p.m.
Elon 0, Old Dominion 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Elon Phoenix men's soccer team battled the Old Dominion Monarchs for 110 minutes in the opening match of the 2008 UNCG Kickoff Classic on Friday night, but the game ended in a scoreless draw. Elon, who had been 0-4-0 all-time against the Monarchs, now sits at 0-1-1 while Old Dominion now owns a record of 0-2-1 on the season.
Total shots were nearly even in the first half as the Phoenix got off six shots to seven for the Monarchs. Of those, however, ODU held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
In the second 45 minutes, Elon managed to double the total shots of ODU, 6-3. Four of the six Phoenix attempts were on frame while all three chances by the Monarchs were saved.
Elon's Clint Irwin denied the only shot by either team in the two 10 minute overtime periods to keep the clean sheet.
For the Phoenix, both Erfan Imeni and Steven Kinney directed three shots on goal.
Irwin posted nine saves on the night to record his fourth career shutout.
ODU's Brennan Kirkpatrick stopped five shots and another two Elon blasts were denied by Monarch defenders.
Elon was unable to take advantage of its huge differential in corner kicks. The Phoenix took 14 corners to just three for the Monarchs. Elon's total of 12 shots also outdid ODU's 11.
The Monarchs were whistled for 16 fouls to just eight for the Phoenix in the 110 minutes of action.
Elon will play its second and final match of the UNCG Kickoff Classic at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro at noon on Sunday against Winthrop.
Winthrop 3, UNC Greensboro 2
GREENSBORO, NC ? In the opening day of action at the UNCG Men's Soccer Kickoff Classic, Old Dominion and Elon played to a scoreless tie, but UNCG and Winthrop had a wild one with Winthrop coming out on top 3-2 at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
The Phoenix (0-1-1) and Monarchs played the first game of the doubleheader and played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. Both teams had several opportunities in the second half and the two overtime periods. However, Elon’s Clint Irwin had nine saves and Brennan Kirkpatrick, who was rescued twice by his defeneders with goal line saves, had five saves for the Monarchs (0-2-1). Old Dominion was shut out for the third straight match, having lost by identical 2-0 scores to SMU and St. John’s last weekend.
In the nightcap, Winthrop held off UNCG for its first-ever win over the Spartans in 11 tries. The Eagles (2-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute when Michael Luk scored off a feed from Ben Kieffner.
The score was still 1-0 when Luk was issued a red card at 56:50 for something that took place in a pack of players prior to a free kick attempt by the Spartans. Playing a man down, however, Winthrop went up 2-0 at 59:29 when Matthew Skonicki scored off a rebound.
The Spartans got on the board, however, just 59 seconds later when Ryan Davis scored off his own rebound in front of the goal ? the third shot by UNCG from point-blank range in the scrum ? and that made it a 2-1 game.
UNCG (0-2-0) tied it at 78:33 when Travis Young scored off a give-and-go from Matt Strine. But the Eagles regained the lead just 13 seconds later when Daniel Revivo scored his fifth goal of the season off the kickoff, racing to a loose ball and chipping it just under the cross bar for the eventual game-winner.
Action continues on Sunday when Elon and Winthrop face-off at 12 noon, followed by Old Dominion and UNCG.
Washington 4, College of Charleston 1
GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Three second half goals paced the Washington Huskies to a 4-1 victory over the College of Charleston Cougars on Friday afternoon in game one of the 2008 Furman Diadora/Spinx Invitational
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 1-2-0 on the year, while Washington improves to 1-2-0.
In the first half, Washington got on the board when Rafael Cox scored in the 11th minute off a deflection from a Charleston defender. The Cougars managed to take one shot on goal in the half, while Washington took five.
In the second half, the Huskies pulled away after scoring three goals in a six minute span, as Brent Richards, Adam Lang and Dylan Tucker-Gagnes scored.
The Cougars lone goal on the night was scored in the 55th minute by Kareem Yearwood on a header. The goal was Yearwood's second on the year. Matt Morris was awarded an assist on the Yearwood goal.
The Cougars return to the pitch on Sunday when they finish off play in the Furman Invitational with a match against Bowling Green at 11:30 a.m. Washington will take on host Furman at 2 p.m.
Georgetown 3, Davidson 0
WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Davidson men’s soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in the first game of their weekend road trip, falling to Georgetown 3-0, Friday afternoon at North Kehoe Field in Washington, D.C.
Georgetown struck first in the ninth minute when Chandler Diggs collected a cross from the right corner and put in his second goal of the season. Right after halftime, the Hoyas scored again on a Corey Zeller goal from the top right corner of the box. The scoring was rounded out in the 89th minute, when Jose Colchao beat Davidson keeper Robby Goldsberry with a shot to the right side of the net, putting the score at 3-0. Davidson Head Coach Matt Spear pointed out the significance of those goals.
“Giving up goals at the start of the game and the second half, we have to know that those kind of moments are critical,” he said. “At the end of the game, we did better, we just had some rough moments at the beginning of both halves.”
The ?Cats were led offensively by juniors Machel Turner and Clinton Smith, who each took four shots in the contest. Turner found the goal on a pair of his shots, with Smith’s one shot on goal coming on an attempt that hit the bottom of the crossbar and ricocheted straight down, inches from crossing the goal line. Robert O’Donnell, Alex Caskey, and Josh Zipin each contributed one of Davidson’s 11 shots on the day. Goldsberry finished his third consecutive 90-minute match in goal with three saves, pushing his season total to 15.
With the loss, Davidson drops to 1-2 on the season, with Georgetown pushing their mark to 3-0. This was also the Hoyas’ first-ever victory over Davidson, tying the all-time series between the schools 1-1.
Davidson will round out their trip on Sunday night when they face off against ninth-ranked Maryland, who entered the weekend with a 1-1 record, in College Park, Md. Spear sees this match as a chance for his team to bounce back in an important contest.
“Big thing now, is that we have to recover quickly, just like last week,” he said. “The guys responded better and played with more energy and better tactics in that second game against Charlotte. Sunday’s a good opportunity, and we have to take advantage and learn from each game.”
