Elon 1, High Point 1
ELON, N.C. -- Both the Elon Phoenix and High Point Panthers scored goals less than 23 minutes into Wednesday night's non-conference women's soccer match, but neither squad could find the back of the net for a second tally and the teams settled for a 1-1 draw in front of 214 fans at Rudd Field. Elon moved to 1-1-1 on the year while High Point drew for the third time in five matches and is 1-1-3.
Although the Phoenix went on the attack early, it was the Panthers who drew first blood. Karra Damascus collected a pass that was toed over an Elon defender from Sara Rager. Damascus then beat Elon's Sydney Little for the score at 22:35.
Less than 20 seconds later the Phoenix drew even when Molly Calpin scored for the second time in two contests. Calpin settled a loose ball and blasted the equalizer past Andrea Ritchie at 22:52.
Neither team was able to score again over the following 87:08.
High Point got off six shots in each of the regulation period, with two going on frame in the first half and five finding their way to the Elon keeper in the second stanza. The Phoenix blasted four shots in each regulation half with two on frame in each. Laura Shupe of High Point got off the only shot on goal of either OT period just over four minutes into the first extra time frame.
For Elon, Little played the first 45 minutes and the two 10 minute overtimes for a total of 65 minutes. She allowed one goal and made two saves. Lizz Johnson logged the second 45 minutes in goal, making five stops on the night.
High Point's Ritchie collected three saves while going the full 110 minutes.
The Panthers held advantages in corner kicks (5-3), total shots (14-12) and shots on goal (8-4). The Phoenix committed fewer fouls (12-21) and made more saves (7-3).
Elon will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon when the squad pays a visit to Old Dominion. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Norfolk, Va.
