Furman men and women finish first at The Citadel Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Furman cross country teams dominated the field at the Citadel Invitational on Saturday, with both the men's and women's teams capturing first place.

The women finished first out of six teams, including SoCon foe The Citadel. Freshman Chloe Kowalski led the Paladins, who placed seven runners in the top 10. Kowalski ran a time of 19:09.27 in the 5K event. Also finishing in the top ten were sophomore Jenna Callahan (3rd - 19:19.29), Brittany Johnson (4th - 19:23.38), sophomore Julia Bryant (5th - 19:26.11), freshman Erin Barker (6th - 19:34.57), freshman Tricia Rossettie (19:41.13) and freshman Hannah Morgan (19:48.21).

Senior Michael Warner led the Paladin men's team to a first-place finish out of seven teams. Warner led the pack with a 26:47.81 time in the 8K, and was one of eight Paladins to finish in the top ten. Other runners in the top ten included freshman Zach Flickinger (2nd - 26:49.93), senior Patrick Morgan (3rd - 26:51.01), sophomore Charles McGoogan (4th - 27:00.24), freshman Lee Gilmer (6th - 27:04.24), senior Alex Plasencia (7th - 27:13.60), freshman Jay Miller (9th - 27:38.44) and senior Jeff O'Connell (27:42.90).

The Paladins hit the course again on Oct. 11, as they host the 36th annual Furman Cross Country Invitational in Greenville, S.C.

College of Charleston men finish second at The Citadel Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston men's and women's cross country squad's competed at the annual Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park on Saturday afternoon.

On the men's side, the Cougars finished second as a team in the event run on the 8k course. Trevor Sprague was the top finisher for the Cougars, as he finished with a time of 27:30 to place eighth. David Lamberson registered a 12th place finish in 28:05, while Eric Robertson placed 15th in 28:22. Timothy Faugl rounded out the top finishers for Charleston, as he finished 16th in a time of 28:26.

On the womens side, Kristen Wolfe placed second overall, finishing with a time of 19:12 on the 5k course. Callen Powers finished 10th in a time of 19:55, while Cara Browning finished 14th in a time of 20:20. Kristin Jenkins rounded out the top finishers for the Cougars, as she ran the course in 22:16 to finish 24th.

The Cougars will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when they take part in the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.

The Citadel women finish second, men third at The Citadel Invitational

Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel women’s team recorded their second runner-up finish in four years and the Bulldog men’s team finished third at the challenging 28th Annual Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park on Saturday morning. Katheryn Gatewood led the women and Brendan Kight led the men for the third meet this season.

Gatewood’s 13th place finish led the women’s team as she ran 20:15 in the 5k race. The junior from El Paso, Texas has led the Bulldog women in all of the team’s races this season. Junior Natalie Wolin led a string of three consecutive Citadel runners to cross the finish line, placing 15th with a time of 20:23. Senior Sarah Strickland followed with a 16th place finish, running 20:26, while senior Erin Ritter placed 17th with a time of 20:55.

The women’s team dominated most of the competition, finishing second with 62 team points. That mark beat South Carolina State’s third place team score of 109. Furman won the women’s collegiate race for the seventh consecutive season, accumulating 15 points as Paladin runners finished in seven of the top eight spots.

Kight, a junior from Sumter, S.C., once again paced the men’s team as he finished 11th in the 8k race with a time of 27:58. Sophomore Zach Yereb ran an inspired 28:19 to finish 14th, his best finish of the season. Senior Zach Johnson placed 17th as he ran 28:28 while freshman Chris Morgan set a personal record with a time of 28:44, placing 20th. Freshman P.J. Wasilchak placed 22nd with a time of 28:57.

The men’s team finished third, falling only eight points short of cross-town rival College of Charleston. Furman won the men’s race for the sixth time in seven years. Charleston Southern placed fourth in the men’s race.

The Citadel returns to action on Friday, Oct. 3 when the Bulldogs compete in the FLrunners.com Invitational presented by Nike in Titusville, Fla.
