SAMFORD WOMEN’S GOLF: BULLDOGS TAKE COMMANDING LEAD AT FRED MARX INVITATIONAL

MONROE, La. --- The first-place Samford University women’s golf team turned in a 36-hole score of 600 on Monday to give the Bulldogs a 12-stroke advantage in the 2008 Fred Marx Invitational hosted by the University of Louisiana at Monroe at the Bayou Desiard Country Club.
“Our team played very well today and I’m pleased with how they competed,” said Samford head coach Woodie Eubanks. “It’s great that we’re in first place right now, but we still have to come out tomorrow and fight hard to take the title.”
Samford’s two-round total of 600 was 12 strokes better than both Jacksonville State and McNeese State, which were tied for second place in the 11-team competition. Host Louisiana-Monroe carded a 36-hole score of 626 for a seventh-place standing.
The Bulldogs’ Sara Hunt, Katelyn Stanier and Maria Troche all finished in the top five Monday. Samford’s talented trio concluded the opening day of the tournament with identical scores of 151. All three Bulldogs ended the day tied for fifth place in the individual standings.
Samford’s Sara Butts added a two-round score of 153, while Heather Arnold posted a first-day total of 158. Arnold, the Bulldogs’ junior from Lenior City, Tenn., shot the team’s best 18-hole score of 72 in the second round.
Hunt posted the best first-round score for Samford as the junior from Columbia, Tenn., fired a 1-over 73. Stanier tallied a similar 73 in the second round of play.
Jacksonville State’s Portia Abbott is ranked first in the individual standings after shooting a 36-hole-best 145.
The first-place Samford University women’s golf team will resume play in the 2008 Fred Marx Invitational on Tuesday at 8 a.m., at the Bayou Desiard Country Club in Monroe, La.
Lady Mocs Finish 13th at Mason Rudolph
FRANKLIN, Tenn.---Chattanooga women’s golf team, ranked No. 36 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings Index, shot a final round 302 (+14) to finish 13th at the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course. The tournament featured 12 teams in the preseason top 15, eight in the top 10.
Sophomore Emma de Groot carded her best round of the tourney with a one-over par 73 to complete the event tied for 35th at 223 (+7). For the tournament she had nine birdies with 16 bogeys and 29 pars.
Once again today holes 10-18 were friendlier for the Lady Mocs. Each round, Chattanooga started out at No. 10 and played that nine at four-over par for the week with de Groot playing the nine at four-under par including a five-birdie binge on day one.
Sophomore Christine Wolf and freshman Maria Salinas each carded three-over par 75’s on the day. Salinas completed her tourney at 225 (+9), while Wolf came in at 231.
Maria Juliana Loza had a 79 on Sunday, while Kayla Stewart carded an 81. Stewart finished tied with Wolf at 231, while Loza ended up at 233.
Chattanooga finished ahead of three preseason top 25 teams including No. 12 Wake Forest (903) by a stroke. The Lady Mocs topped No. 22 Tennessee (911) and No. 25 Stanford (907) by nine and five shots, respectively.
Defending champion UCLA ran away with this year’s crown with a 14-under par score of 850. Southern California came in second at 856 (-8), six shots back, while Oklahoma State finished third at 863 (-1). The Bruins Sydnee Michaels, who aced No. 16 yesterday, claimed medalist honors at 11-under par 205.

Whittaker Leads College of Charleston to Fourth at Badger Invitational
Madison, Wisc. - Leigh Whittaker shot a 74 in today's round to finish in the top 10 and lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to fourth at the Badger Invitational held Sept. 27-28 at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisc. California carded an 889 to win the event. Charleston totaled a 912, just four strokes out of the top three.
Badger Jessie Gerry won individual medalist honors with a three-round 215 score.
Whittaker shot a 222 to finish ninth for the Cougars, while Steffi Kirchmayr tied for 10th with a 223. Fiona Puyo shot a 234 to tie for 32nd and Emily Rapp tied for 40th with a 237. Kati Scholten shot a 240 to tie for 50th. Gabi Zuber competed for CofC as an individual and tied for 26th with a 233.
The women's golf team is next in action at the Stono Cup Oct. 6-7. The tournament will be held at the Links at Stono Ferry.
