Furman 2, South Carolina 1
GREENVILLE, S.C. ? Furman freshman Warren Creavalle scored in the 74th minute to complete Furman’s rally from a 1-0 deficit and give the Paladins a 2-1 victory over 19th-ranked South Carolina before a crowd of 1,755 Wednesday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The win improves Furman to 3-4-1 on the season while the Gamecocks slip to 4-3-1.
“This was an important win for our team against a well coached South Carolina team that is in form,” said Furman head coach Doug Allison. “I am happy for Dane and Warren scoring the goals and pleased with our overall effort tonight.”
After being put on the defensive for a good portion of the second half, Furman managed to capitalize on its opportunity for a game-winner at 73:01. Andrew Krysiak fired a shot towards goal from the right corner of the six-yard box that was saved off of the line by a South Carolina defender, but Creavalle collected a failed clearance on the left side of the box and deposited a shot for his second goal of the season to give Furman a 2-1 lead.
South Carolina opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Blake Brettschneider rose above the Paladin defense to connect with Danny Cates’ long throw in and redirect it into the right hand corner past a diving Josh Zimmer.
Furman answered less then two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Patrick Murray, taking a free kick from 25 yards out on the right side, played the ball to Michael Erwood near the top of the box who touched the ball in the path of Dane Roberts streaking through the right side. Roberts volleyed the shot past Gamecock keeper Jimmy Maurer for the equalizer at 16:02.
Zimmer earned his third win in goal for the Paladins registering five saves. Maurer stopped three shots and was the beneficiary of two saves off of the goal line by his defense in the loss.

Charlotte 1, UNC Greensboro 0
CHARLOTTE, N.C. ? Chris Salvaggione scored the only goal of the match with 15:07 to play as Charlotte topped UNC Greensboro, 1-0, in men’s soccer action at Transamerica Field on Wednesday night.
The 49ers, who made their first Top 25 appearance in 10 years earlier this month and are ranked No. 27 in the College Soccer News Top 30 this week, moved to 6-1-0 on the season. UNCG had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped in falling to 3-4-1 on the year. Charlotte snapped a three-game losing skid against the Spartans.
The Spartans kept Charlotte’s high-scoring duo of Salvaggione and Andres Cuero subdued for most of the night. However, Salvaggione got loose off a feed from Jason Hawes in the 75th minute to break a scoreless tie and tally his seventh goal in seven matches this season.
Chad Janda made seven saves for UNCG. Charlotte held a 17-7 advantage in shots, including 12-3 in the second half, and 5-0 in corner kicks.
UNCG, which has had seven of its eight matches decided by one goal or less, will return to action Saturday night. The Spartans will host Brown at UNCG Soccer Stadium in the Homecoming match. Game time is set for 7 pm.
North Carolina 2, Elon 1
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Freshman center back Sheanon Williams’ late unassisted goal proved to the game-winner Wednesday, as No. 15 North Carolina claimed a 2-1 victory over Elon at Fetzer Field. Forward Brian Shriver also scored for the Tar Heels, who got back in the win column following their first loss of the season last weekend at Boston College.
In addition to the offensive output from Williams and Shriver, senior goalkeeper Jacob Wescoe made five saves for the Tar Heels (6-1-1) and preserved the win with a penalty kick stop in the 86th minute.
With the match tied at one, Williams’ 81st-minute goal capped a flurry of action for Carolina and opened a dramatic final 10 minutes. One minute before the go-ahead score, Garry Lewis and Williams fired back-to-back shots that resulted in a Michael Callahan corner kick that found Williams on the left side of the net.
Elon goalkeeper Kyle Boerner came out to challenge Williams but could not corral the ball. Williams then sent the ball off a Phoenix defender before muscling it into the left side of the open net from five yards out for a 2-1 advantage and his first collegiate goal.
The lead could have been short-lived, as Elon (2-5-1) was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute after a UNC foul on a scramble in the box following a corner. Will Mason sent the PK to Wescoe’s right but he punched it out to preserve the one-goal lead.
Following the PK attempt, play intensified with five yellow cards awarded over the final four minutes of play, but the Tar Heels did not concede another shot attempt and held on for the victory.
Carolina posted a 22-9 advantage in shots, but Elon held an 8-7 edge in corners. In addition to Wescoe’s solid play in goal, Boerner made eight saves for the Phoenix.
Shriver’s goal was his third of the season, while Urso notched his third assist to grab a share of the team lead.
Elon answered just over five minutes later on Justin Wyatt’s third goal of the season on just the third shot of the night for the Phoenix. Erfan Imeni served a corner kick from the left side of the field past the mouth of the goal to Wyatt, who flicked the ball over his head and into the net for the equalizer in the 41st minute
