Mountaineers down UNC Asheville, 2-0

ASHEVILLE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's soccer got off to a somewhat sluggish start Tuesday afternoon, but picked up the pace and was able to defeat UNC Asheville 2-0. With the win the Mountaineers improve to 4-2-1 on the season including a 2-1 mark on the road, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-6-1 overall.

UNCA came out strong in the first few minutes of action, as they had two shots just wide of the goal and one on target.

The action died down until the 31st minute of play, when UNCA's Lindsey Bragg took a shot on target, and ASU's goalkeeper Caroline Clarke made a diving save to stop the ball from going into the back of the net.

In the 29th minute of play, the Apps were able to get on the board, as junior Caroline Lowe beat a defender off a pass from Amy Zahirski and hit the ball in the lower left corner of the net, past UNCA's goalkeeper, to score her second goal of the season.

The Bulldogs had their chances to score late in the half, off both a corner kick and a free kick just outside the 18 yard box, but Clarke was able to make two great save to keep ASU's lead at 1-0.

Appalachian took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Just nine minutes into the second half, senior Casey Cleary scored her first goal of the season, as she placed the ball into the lower right corner of the net off a pass from Zahirski, who recorded her second assist of the afternoon. With the goal, Cleary becomes Appalachian's all-time leader in career goals, passing ASU standout Jennifer Rudy. Cleary now has 26 goals in her career with the Black and Gold.

The Mountaineers were able to hold on to their two goal advantage and win the match 2-0.

Cleary led Appalachian with four shots and two shots on goal, while McKenna Stockhausen  tallied four shots for the Bulldogs.  In goal, Clarke recorded five saves while Veronica Lazar had two saves.

ASU continues with its 2008 campaign, as the Apps begin SoCon play against the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex.
