CHICAGO, Ill. ? The College Sporting News announced that Elon senior place kicker Andrew Wilcox (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) ? fresh off his game-winning field goal at six-time national champion Georgia Southern Saturday night for the Phoenix’s fifth triumph over a top-25 opponent since joining the NCAA Division I level ? was declared its National Special Teams Player of the Week Monday evening.
Wilcox matched his career-best outing in field goals with a 5-for-5 performance, capped by the game-winner with six seconds remaining to lift Elon to its first victory ever at Paulson Stadium and first win ever in its Southern Conference opener. The SoCon and NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision leader with 2.0 field goals made per game, he scored a season-high 16 of the Phoenix’s 22 points against the Eagles ? his highest total since posting a career-high 18 points against GSU last year.
During his efforts against Georgia Southern, Wilcox joined the league’s all-time top-10 career charts in points scored by kicking, field goals attempted and field goals made. On Monday afternoon, he was dubbed the SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week. At 9.5 points per performance, he ranks third in the SoCon and 21st in the FCS in scoring.
Wilcox and the rest of the No. 8 Phoenix (3-1 overall, 1-0 SoCon) will return home to the friendly confines of Rhodes Stadium, where Elon has emerged victorious in six of its last eight games, to welcome Samford (2-1 overall, 0-0 SoCon) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday during the Phoenix’s Family Weekend festivities for the Bulldogs’ inaugural SoCon football contest.
