Appalachian State men second; women fourth at Asics Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Appalachian State University men's cross country posted an impressive performance Saturday morning as the Mountaineers took home a second place finish at the Asics Winthrop Invitational. Louisville finished first in the team results with 23 points, while the Mountaineers were second with 41 points.
The Cardinals are ranked fifth in the Southeast region, while Appalachian is ranked ninth.
SoCon foes Elon, Davidson and UNC Greensboro finished third, fourth and fifth place respectively, while Wofford placed tenth.
Junior Phil Mitchell led the way for the Mountaineers notching a second-place finish overall with a time of 24:59. Mitchell was eight seconds off of the winner, junior Scott McClain from Louisville.
Asmeron Desta also had an impressive showing for the Apps, placing sixth in the meet with a time of 25:15.
Josh Houser, Alec Meyer and Samuel Mordecai also posted strong performances for Appalachian as the trio grabbed the 13th through 15th place spots.
Ryan O'Keefe, Sean Soderman and Mike Walker rounded out the top finishes for ASU, as they notched the 19-21st places.
Appalachian State University women's cross country finished fourth at the 2008 Asics Winthrop Invitational Saturday morning.
Louisville grabbed the team title scoring 29 points, while South Carolina finished second with 105 points and SoCon rival Davidson placed third with 106 points. Appalachian scored 114 points to earn the fourth place spot.
Meghan Gaffney had the best finish for Appalachian, placing second overall with a time of 17:59. Gaffney improved her time from her first meet of the year by 1:01.
Louisville's Tarah McKay finished first overall with a time of 17:05, while Emily Borsare of Louisville took home third, with Davidson's Caroline Sanker finishing fourth.
Charlotte Walsh had the next best finish for the Apps, placing 17th with a time of 18:53. Hannah Parks was right behind Walsh, notching the 21st place spot.
The Mountaineers continue with their 2008 campaign, Friday October 3 as they head to Bethlehem, Pa. to compete at one of the nation's largest races in the Paul Short Run.
College of Charleston women finish fourth; men sixth at Virginia Tech Invitational
BLACKSBURG, VA. --- The College of Charleston cross country team competed at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday. The women’s squad finished fourth, while them men’s team finished sixth.
Top finishers for the women include Kristen Wolfe, who ran the 4.6 K course in 17:37 to record an 18th place finish. Rebecca Stewart finished 28th in a time of 18:37, while Callen Powers placed 30th in a time of 18:50. Cara Browning rounded out the top Cougar finishers with a 32nd place finish in 19:06.
For the men, Trevor Sprague was the team’s top finisher, placing 31st in a time of 25:58. Christian Bailey finished 52nd in a time of 27:20, while David Lamberson placed 53rd with a time of 27:21 on the 7.6 K course.
The Cougars will return to action when they participate in The Citadel Invitational at James Island County Park on September 27 beginning at 9:45 a.m.
UNC Greensboro men finish fifth; women ninth at Asics Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, SC ? Competing in the Gold Division, UNC Greensboro’s men’s cross country team finished fifth and the women’s team took ninth at the Asics Winthrop Invitational on Saturday in Rock Hill, SC. The men’s team totaled 137 points. The women’s team compiled 236 points.
In the women’s 5K race, junior Sherrika Jordan paced the Spartans for the second straight meet. Jordan ran a career-best time of 19:04 and finished 24th. Sophomore Tiffany Garber also ran a personal best, covering the course in a time of 19:22 and placing 38th. Freshman Kerry Hartman placed 60th with a time of 19:45, while classmate Jenna Paley was just two seconds behind in 62nd. Junior Mary Ann Rutz was 76th with a career-best 5K time of 19:57, while freshman Emily Vasquez ran 20:17 and finished 85th. Freshman Chelsea Willette and sophomore Michelle Chewens finished 92nd and 93rd, respectively. Willette ran 20:31, while Chewens clocked 20:33. Rounding out the Spartans were freshman Caitlin Lenz (115th, 21:30) and junior Rebecca Colangelo (144th, 23:29).
Louisville’s Tarah McKay won the women’s 5K race en route to helping the Cardinals to the women’s team title. McKay had a race-winning time of 17:05 as the Cardinals total 29 points in the team standings.
Freshmen Joey Thompson and Jermaine Coore led the Spartan men in the 8K race. Thompson and Coore both covered the course in a time of 25:52, placing 23rd and 24th, respectively. Senior Josh Wyatt placed 32nd with a time of 26:16, while sophomore Anthony Savoia ran 26:40 and finished 41st. Sophomore Andrew Clyne was 46th and ran 26:50, while redshirt senior Xavier Rutz was just three seconds behind and placed 50th. Junior Terry Wyatt raced 27:21 and finished 65th as junior Cory Bowen ran 27:24 and placed 68th. Junior Lincoln Bennett posted a career-best time of 27:53 en route to finishing 75th. Sophomore Bobby Belcher crossed the finish line in a time of 28:12 and placed 81st, while freshman Brian Carrington was 84th with a time of 28:21. Rounding out the Spartans were junior Ryan Solomon (92nd, 29:03) and freshman Patrick O’Connor (102nd, 30:00).
Louisville also won the men’s title and had the top finisher. The Cardinals totaled 23 points, while Scott McClain had a race-winning time of 24:51.
UNCG races next on Saturday, Oct. 4 when the Spartans take part in two meets. The Spartans will run at the George Mason Invitational and the Hagan Stone Classic. The George Mason Invitational will take place at Bull Run Regional Park in Manassas, VA with the women’s 6K race beginning at 10 a.m. and the men’s 8K race at 10:45. Meanwhile, the Hagan Stone Classic will take place at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro. The men’s 8K race is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., while the women’s race is at 10:15.

Samford men and women take third in the Crimson Tide Classic
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Samford University cross country teams both took third place in the Crimson Tide Classic on Saturday hosted by the University of Alabama at the Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course. The women scored 48 points and the men score 88 points, following close behind the winner Alabama and runner-up Georgia State in each race.
Sophomore Jillian Klassen led the Samford women, grabbing fifth place (18:00.96), while sophomore Hillary Neal (18:03.17) and freshman Andrea Seccafien (18:09.70) finished behind Klassen at sixth and seventh, respectively. The next group of Bulldogs to finish was senior Katie Almand (18:57.86), junior Jessica Van Ausdall (18:59.23) and freshman Cori Christensen (19:09.15) at 18th, 19th and 20th places respectively. Freshman Brittany Harrison was next in 28th place (19:38.95), followed by follow freshman Alli Keithan (20:14.97) at 39th place.
The Samford men were led by senior Cameron Bean again this week who took seventh place (25:21.96) behind five Alabama runners and one unattached runner. Seniors Michael Schwartz (26:49.74) and Bo Brawner (26:51.80) and junior Blaise Carie (26:54.35) followed in 21st, 22nd and 23rd places, respectively. Junior Patrick Ollinger (27:25.65) came in 29th and junior Chas Keithan (27:25.97) came in 30th while freshman Justin Rogers (28:04.80) took 38th place. Right behind Rogers was sophomore Scott Cope (28:19.88) at 40th place. Junior Will Denton (28:50.95) took 45th place and freshman Matt Bryson (29:09.89) took 49th place. Freshman George Mardre (29:12.12) and sophomore Jay Maservy (35:55.16) rounded out the Bulldog men at 51st and 75th place.
Samford will run again in two weeks when they participate in the Auburn Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 4.

Georgia Southern women finish 16th at Asics Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. ? The Georgia Southern Cross Country team placed 16th at the 20th Annual Asics Winthrop Invitational at Winthrop Farm.
The Lady Eagles missed out on 15th place by two points.
Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) crossed the finish line first for the Lady Eagles with a time of 20:49, which was good enough for 98th place.
Senior, Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) finished the 5k event in 105th place, with a time of 20:58.
Georgia Southern’s freshman trio of Leah Bradley (McDonough, Ga.) crossed the line fourth for the Lady Eagles with a time of 22:02, Brittani Martin (Alpharetta, Ga.) finished third on the team with a 21:43 mark and Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla) was the fifth Lady Eagle to cross the finish line completing the 5k event with a time of 22:19.
Sophomore, Melissa Royer (Cumming, Ga.) was the last Lady Eagle to cross the finish line. She did so with a time of 23:58.
Wofford men place 10th; women 14th at Asics Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C.- The Wofford men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Saturday morning as they both competed in the 21st Asics Winthrop Cross Country Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The men placed 10th out of 14 schools in the 8k race, while the women beat a Southern Conference opponent in a meet for the first time since 2002 placing them 14th out of 17 in the 5k race.
Senior Josh Shumaker led the way for the Terriers with a time of 27:24 putting him in the 67th position. Sophomore Dusty Bateman and junior Justin Hunter followed in close behind one another placing them 87th and 90th, respectively, with times of 28:32 and 28:58. The Wofford women's team is already making major strides under new head coach Bryan Jackson as it beat current Southern Conference member Georgia Southern for its first win over a SoCon member since 2002. However the women placed 14th out of 17 teams.
Freshman Caroline Burdette led the way again for the Terriers as she placed 96th with a time of 20:44. Kari Harris was next in line for the Terriers with a time of 21:08 placing her 110th. Justina Oliva was the third Wofford finisher with a time of 21:33 putting her in the 116th position. The remaining Terriers finished as followed:

Elon men finish third; women fifth at ASICS Winthop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Elon men's cross country team finished third out of 14 teams at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational Saturday, Sept. 20 in Rock Hill, S.C. This marks the second meet the team has finished in the top three. Elon finished ahead of Southern Conference foes Davidson (4th), UNC Greensboro (5th), and Wofford (10th).
Freshman William Schefer posted the team top-time of 25:41 en route to a 17th-place finish, out of 122 total athletes. Coming in just behind Schefer was Matthew Richardson in 18th with a time of 25:43.
Eric Lewandowski clocked a 26:04 for a 26th-place finish. He was followed by Clay Sankey in 36th with a time of 26:30. Jason MacCollum rounded out the top-40 finishes for Elon with a time of 26:35, good for 38th. Justin Gianni turned a top-50 performance with a time of 26:50.
Conon O'Brien crossed the line in 27:01 for a 55th-place finish. Andrew Hawkey (63rd), Taylor Zorski (72nd), David Wells (79th), Andrew Garrison (80th) and Nicolas Domise (85th) rounded out the performances for the Phoenix.
The Elon women's cross country team notched a fifth-place finish at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The team finished ahead of SoCon member schools UNC Greensboro (9th), Wofford (14th), and Georgia Southern (16th). A total of 25 schools competed in the event.
Emily Fournier recorded Elon's only top-10 finish of the day with a time of 18:32, which was good for seventh out of 159 runners. Katie White finished 17th, the only other top-20 finish for the Phoenix, with a time of 18:58.
Catherine Rossi clocked a 19:18 for 35th, just ahead of Melanie Reyer who finished 37th with a time of 19:20.
Caitlin Beeler and Allyson Costa tied for 52nd, clocking times of 19:38. Alyssa Wilke finished in 19:41 for 58th.
Lauren Fredrickson (80th), Courtney Whalen (84th), Meaghan Collins (106th), Jessica Doan (107th), and Justine Schulerud (108th) rounded out the finishes for Elon.
The teams returns to action October 4th at the Hagen Stone Classic in Greensboro, N.C.
Davidson women finish third; men fourth at Asics Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. ? Senior Caroline Sanker made her season debut, finishing fourth overall to help the Davidson Wildcat women's cross country team to a third-place team finish at the Winthrop Invitational Saturday morning.
Sanker finished with a time of 18:21 to pace the 'Cats, who amassed 106 points to finish just a point behind South Carolina (105). With six runners in the top 12, Louisville finished first with just 29 points.
Freshman Jane Gay continued to impress, finishing ninth overall with a time of 18:37. Sophomore Lauren Childs (26th, 19:06), senior Emily King (28th, 19:08) and sophomore Heather Conarroe (39th, 19:22) also scored for the Wildcats.
"I am really pleased with our performance today!" head coach Jen Straub said. "Caroline and Jane both ran great races, and our three-four-five-and-six runners ran great races. I am very happy with how we are running right now as a team; we just need to keep running up to our potential!"
Davidson also finished just ahead of SoCon rivals Appalachian (114) and Elon (148), as well as Greensboro (236), Wofford (421) and Georgia Southern (432).
Junior Tom Divinnie brought home a fifth-place finish to help the Davidson cross country team take fourth place out of 14 teams overall at the Asics/Winthrop Invitational Saturday afternoon in Rock Hill. S.C.
Divinnie traversed the 8K course in a career-best time of 25:13 on his way to his top-five placing, in a race where just three seconds separated the third through fifth-place finishers. It was his second consecutive top-five placing on the year, after a runner-up performance at the Eye Opener meet on Sept. 6.
He was followed by junior Alex Hoyt, whose time of 26:12 was good for 24th, and freshman Ryan Hopkins, who ran a career-best 26:16 and finished 27th. Senior Thad Sieracki finished 33rd (26:38), and junior Peter Bruton came in 37th (26:50) to round out the scoring for the Wildcats.
Davidson amassed 126 points as a team for their fourth-place result. Coming in just ahead of the ?Cats were meet winners Louisville, who completed the sweep of both the men’s and women’s titles with 23 points, and Southern Conference rivals Appalachian State (41 points), and Elon (113), who came in second and third place, respectively. Other SoCon teams competing in the Gold Division included UNC Greensboro, who rounded out the top five with 137 points, and tenth-place Wofford (319).
The ?Cats will have a few weeks off before they head to Louisville, Ky. to take on some of the nation’s top teams in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Oct. 4.
Western Carolina men and women finish second at Catamount Classic
Cullowhee, N.C. - The Catamounts men's and women's cross country teams both finished in second place in hosting the Catamount Classic Saturday morning.
The men's team placed all five runners in the top 15 in the first race of the day, with junior Stephen Hammound bring home top team honors with a third place finish and a time of 25:26.43. Freshman Josey Weaver came in 10th place (26:13.76) and teammate sophomore Stephen Roach came in 13th (26:36.24). The Catamounts top six runners all ran personal bests in the meet.
The women's team also placed all five runners in the top 15, with senior Megan Issacs finishing in sixth place to take home top team honors with a time of 18:32.91. Sophomore Jordan Gaddy and junior Lindsay Groce came in ninth and 10th places, respectively, barely 14 seconds apart.
The Georgia Bulldogs took home the men's title thanks to a first and second finish by their top two runners. Ross Ridgewell took home first in the individual honors with teammate Caleb Vogt coming in second by three seconds.
"We knew Georgia coming into the meet was going to be tough with them being ranked in the top 15 in the rankings," said Catamount head coach Danny Williamson. "On the men's side our top six ran personal bests and you can't ask for much more," Williamson said.
The Bulldogs also won the women's title with a perfect 1-2-3-4-5 finish, with senior Natalie Picchetti coming in first place to take home top individual honors for the day with a time of 17:53.00. Teammate Kristie Krueger came in second place, by just two seconds.
"Our top five women's runners ran personal bests today," said Coach Williamson. "The competition sets us up for success later this season in the Southern Conference," Williamson said.
Georgia finished with 15 points to take first place for the women's title, followed by the Catamounts finishing in second place (48 Points), followed by Gardner-Webb (83), and finally Savannah College of Art & Design (113).
Georgia's men's team finished in first place with 18 points, followed by Western Carolina finishing with 47 points in 2nd, followed by Savannah College of Art & Design (90), then finally Gardner Webb (98).
Western returns to action in two weeks, when they travel to Louisville to participate in the Greater Louisville Classic on Oct. 4 starting at 9 a.m.
Chattanooga women finish second at Tennessee Invitational
MARYVILLE, Tenn. --- Sophomore Tara Gietema finished second at the Tennessee Invitational Friday evening to lead the Lady Mocs to a second place finish at the Lambert Acres Golf Course.
Gietema ran the 5-kilometer race in a time of 18:25. Senior Sabrina Lefort was Chattanooga’s second finisher in eighth place in a time of 19:06. Katie Williams, Meredith White and Emily Wood were 10th, 11th and 12th respectively for the Lady Mocs.
The men did not compete as a team. Emmanuel Kirwa placed 10th overall with a time of 25:37.17 in the 8K race and Kevin Huwe ran the course in a time of 26:57.99.
