Appalachian State 1, Campbell 0
BOONE, N.C.- Arie Muniz scored the games only goal in the 73rd minute to give Appalachian State a 1-0 win over Campbell Saturday evening at the ASU Soccer Stadium.
On the goal, Tanner Chamblin played a ball in the middle of the field to Muniz, who made a give and go with Ryan Maloney down the middle of the field and beat the goalie to his left with a shot on the ground.
It was Muniz's second goal of the season while Maloney picked up his first assist of the season.
Campbell outshot Appalachian 13-6 but freshman goalkeeper Collin Taylor made five saves and recorded his third shutout of the season. Campbell's had a chance early in the game when Justin Madrid got a header on target but Taylor came up with the save. Towards the end of the first half Josue Soto ripped a shot to the upper right corner that Taylor got a piece of to knock out of bounds.
It was another physical contest for the Mountaineers has the teams combined for 27 fouls, three yellow cards and a red card.
With the win Appalachian movesto 5-1 on the season and travels to Wake Forest on Wednesday Sept. 24 to take on the Deamon Deacons at 7 p.m.
UNC Greensboro 1, UNC Wilmington 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Chad Janda made a leaping save as time expired after Tim Masters burned his former team for the game-winning goal as UNC Greensboro topped cross-state rival UNC Wilmington, 1-0, in men’s soccer action at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.
The win extended UNCG’s unbeaten streak to four straight (3-0-1) and raised their record back to .500 at 3-3-1.
Masters, who transferred from UNCW to UNCG prior to the 2007 season, broke a scoreless tie with a header at 82:04. Will Mack lofted a ball from about 30 yards out over a crowd near the top of the box. Masters, a senior from Charlotte, NC, broke from the crowd and jumped to get a head on it, redirecting it just enough for the only goal of the match.
The Seahawks (3-5-0) weren’t finished though. In the closing seconds, UNCW’s Brian Harrison got a shot off. Janda leaped high in the air and got just enough of a punch on it to deflect off the top of the crossbar and over the goal to preserve the win. It was the second straight nailbiter for the Spartans. On Wednesday night against Campbell, it was Janda and the defense stopping two point blank shots with 30 seconds to play to preserve the victory.
The Spartans outshot the Seahawks, 13-8, on the night and had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. It was the fourth straight meeting between the two squads that was decided by one goal ? all of them coming late in the match.
UNCG will hit the road Wednesday night to face Charlotte in a 7 pm match.
William & Mary 2, Elon 1
ELON, N.C. -- The William & Mary Tribe scored twice in the first 20 minutes and then held off a furious comeback attempt by the Elon Phoenix to earn a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory from Rudd Field on Saturday night. The decision upped the Tribe to 3-0-2 while the Phoenix dropped to 2-4-1 on the 2008 season.
Price Thomas put the first marker on the board at the 13:02 mark after taking a Nathan Belcher pass which was threaded between two Elon defenders. It was his first goal of the season.
The William & Mary lead grew to 2-0 just over four minutes later when Belcher took a Doug McBride pass and beat Elon's Kyle Boerner for the score 17:40 into the game.
Elon pulled to within a goal in the 26th minute. After a Tribe foul, Elon's Justin Wyatt toed the ball to Steven Kinney who rocketed a shot just off the inside of the left post and into the back of the net with his first score of the season.
After the break, the Phoenix controlled much of the contest. Elon managed five shots in the final 45 minutes, three of which were put on goal, but denied by Andrew McAdams. The Tribe failed to put any of its four second half shots on goal.
"This was a well-fought college match, especially after the opening 20 minutes," said Elon head coach Darren Powell. "Our guys fought back to put us in position to get something from tonight's game, but we fell a little short. We'll move on and get ready to play North Carolina on Wednesday night."
Boerner finished the game with one save while McAdams grabbed four stops.
The Phoenix was out-shot 13-10 overall, but held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
Elon will hit the road for its next two contests, the first of which comes on Wednesday night at nationally-ranked North Carolina. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
