Greenville, S.C. ? The 1976 Furman women’s golf team, which won the AIAW National Championship, will be honored during several events this weekend on the Furman campus.

Friday evening Furman will host a banquet in honor of the team with former Paladin golfer and current president of Nike Golf Cindy Davis serving as the keynote speaker.  Members of the 1976 team, including Leigh Coulter, Beth Daniel, Cindy Ferro, Holly Hunt, Betsy King and Sherri Turner are expected to attend, along with a number of former Furman golfers and coaches.

The team members will tour the newly renovated Furman University Golf Course with current women’s coach Jen Hanna on Saturday morning before holding a LPGA-USGA Girls’ Golf clinic at Furman’s REK Center at 10 a.m. The championship team will be signing autographs for the public at Paladin Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.

At halftime of Furman’s 2 p.m. football game with Delaware, the team will be recognized and will receive championship rings in honor of winning Furman’s first national title in any sport.

The 1976 Paladins defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes and their standout freshman Nancy Lopez by one stroke when Daniel buried a short par putt on the final hole at the Forest Akers West Course in East Lansing, Mich.  The victory helped lay the groundwork for a Paladin program that has reached 16 NCAA Championships, claimed 12 Southern Conference titles and produced numerous professionals over the past 32 years.

Daniel, Ferro, King and Turner continued their golf careers on the LPGA Tour after leaving Furman and combined for 70 wins and eight major championships.  Daniel and King, two of the most recognized players in the history of women’s professional golf, are both members of the LPGA Hall of Fame.
