Waynesville, N.C. - Western Carolina rode its record-setting opening round on Monday (284) to cruise to the 2008 Cullowhee Caf? Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate team championship Tuesday afternoon by five strokes despite a hard charge from fellow conference member, Wofford. First-round, co-leader, Lorie Warren of Belmont duplicated her opening round three-under, 69, despite varying conditions to claim individual medalist honors by a stroke over Wofford's Sarah Hurt.

The golfers were greeted with significantly cooler temperatures and sporadic rain sprinkles on Tuesday morning. However, the weather held the majority of the day despite overcast skies to allow the completion of the tournament without delay.

WCU placed three golfers inside the top 10 finishers to claim its sixth tournament title all-time, and it's first since 2006. The 36-hole total of 578 also ranked as the second-lowest round in tournament history, two strokes off the all-time record of 576 shot in 2005 en route to the title.

All told, the Catamounts have won the Great Smokies Intercollegiate in six of the past seven years.

WCU (578) and Wofford (583) were followed by two-time champion, Tennessee Tech in third at 586. SoCon newcomer, Samford, was fourth two strokes back at 588 with Winthrop (589) rounding out the top five team finishers. Wofford, which advanced two positions on the final team leader board from its round one fourth-place standing, posted the lowest round of the second day at 290.

Samford fired 118 pars, two more than champion Western Carolina (116), while Winthrop finished with 28 birdies, two ahead of a four-way tie for fourth.

Individually, Warren carded the second-lowest individual 36-hole score in tourney history (138) with consecutive scores of 69 (WCU's Ashley Hovda shot 134 to win in 2005). Wofford's Sarah Hurt finished second, one-stroke in arrears at 139, followed by Tennessee Tech's Diana Carson (141) in third and a three-way tie between WCU's Blaire Minter and Elin Mickelsson, and Samford's Katelyn Stanier for fourth at 142.

Over her last four rounds at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate over the past two seasons, Warren has three rounds of 69 and one of 74 for a stroke average of 70.25.

Hurt and Mercer's Monica Kelsey led the tournament with 11 birdies apiece, while Wofford's Meredith Few and Paige Gifford of Jacksonville each posted a tourney-high 27 pars.

Behind Minter and Mickelsson (142), Catamount junior Desiree Karlsson finished tied for seventh with a two-day total of 143, five strokes off the pace. Freshman Rachel Nelson finished tied for 52nd at 153 with sophomore Josefine Sundh (92nd, 159) rounding out Western's team scorers.

Freshman Ashley Shinn led the five individuals playing unattached over the two-day event, carding 151 to finish amidst a tie for 40th, with classmate Christina Amoriello finishing tied for 106th (165).

Already with a runner-up (Draper Valley Intercollegiate) and a team championship, Western Carolina is off to its best start since the 2005-06 season when the Catamounts claimed three-consecutive team titles to open the year. WCU returns to action on Oct. 11-14 at the Starmount Fall Classic hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Starmount Forrest Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

Wofford finishes second with a pair in top 10

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- The Wofford women's golf team broke its day-old single-round school record and shot the lowest 18 hole score of the day to finish second out of 22 teams at the season-opening Cullowhee Cafe Great Smokies Intercollegiate at the par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Country Club course Tuesday.

The Terriers, who lowered their school record by eight strokes to 293 during Monday's opening round, bettered the score again and finished with a 290 during the final 18 holes to pull within five of tournament champion and host, Western Carolina. Wofford's 293-290--583 (+7) set a new standard for 36 holes.

Freshman Sarah Hurt completed her first collegiate event one stroke out of medalist position with a 70-69--139 (-5). She becomes the first Terrier women's golfer to post a sub-par effort in her first tournament and in the process, set a new school record for 36 holes. Sophomore Meredith Few moved into the top 10 with a 10th-place 74-71--145 (+1). Her 71 during Tuesday's second round was a new career low for the Aiken, S.C., native.

Senior Erin Wells, who garnered 2007 All-Southern Conference accolades, finished just outside the top 10 with a 72-74--146 (+2).

HANAHAN, SC ? UNC Greensboro had its best round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a team total 299 in the final round of the Cougar Classic women’s golf tournament to finish 18th in the season opening tournament at Yeamans Hall GC.

Georgia held off a late charge by Alabama for the team title. Alabama shot 282 on Tuesday to erase a good portion of the big lead that the Bulldogs had amassed yesterday. However, in the end, Georgia came away with a five-shot win.

Florida State’s Carolina Westrup won individual honors, shooting a 66 on the final day to come back for the win. Westrup started the day among a quartet of players tied for second place behind Georgia’s Mallory Hetzel. Hetzel faltered on Tuesday, however, shooting a 74.
