Catamounts Lead Following Record Opening Round

Western Carolina Leads 2008 Great Smokies after Tournament-Record Round

Three individuals tied for lead with identical three-under rounds of 69

 

Waynesville, N.C. ? Western Carolina broke the tournament’s three-year old single-round scoring record by two strokes, carding an opening round 284 on Monday to lead Southern Conference newcomer, Samford, by seven strokes at the 2008 Cullowhee Caf? / Great Smokies Women’s Intercollegiate golf tournament at the par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Country Club.

 

The second and final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 9:30 am.

 

Behind Western Carolina (284) and Samford (291) are two-time team champion, Tennessee Tech (1999 & 2000) in third at 292, followed by Wofford one-stroke back at 293 and Elon (297) rounding out the top five.

 

Three players stand tied atop the individual leader board after 18 holes. Belmont’s Lorie Warren, who has carded 69 in the opening round in each of the past two seasons, Chelsea Harris of Austin Peay, and Carley Rhyne from Tennessee Tech each shot three-under on Monday.

 

Western Carolina has two players among the four tied in the second paring in fourth. Freshman Blaire Minter, who claimed individual medalist honors in her first-ever collegiate event a week ago at the Draper Valley Intercollegiate, and junior Desiree Karlsson each carded a two-under, 70. The Catamount duo is knotted with Samford’s Katelyn Stanier and Sarah Hurt from Wofford, one stroke off the pace.

 

WCU junior Elin Mickelsson is one stroke in arrears after posting a one-under, 71, to stand tied for eighth, with freshman Rachel Nelson shooting one-over, 73, in a tie for 19th. Rounding out Western’s scorers from Monday was sophomore Josefine Sundh (T-94th, 81) whose round started rough after losing her ball on the first hole.

 

Minter and Mickelsson were joined by Samford’s Sara Hunt in carding an event-low score of 33 on nine holes ? Minter carded hers on the front nine while Mickelsson and Hunt fired it on the back.

UNCG’s Creed and Aidemark card rounds of 76 at Cougar Classic on Monday

 

CHARLESTON, SC ? Erica Creed and Sofia Aidemark both carded a second round 76 to lead UNC Greensboro’s second round 309 at the Cougar Classic women’s golf tournament Monday afternoon.

 

Georgia opened up a 13-shot lead on the second day of the tournament, taking a big lead over second-place Virginia. The Bulldogs’ Mallory Hetzel sits atop the individual leaderboard at 137, three shots ahead of a quartet of golfers that includes teammate Marta Silva.

 

Starting off on No. 10, Creed got off to a quick start and played the back side of the course in 35. But six bogeys and one birdie on the front side of the course left her four-over for the day. Also starting on No. 10, Aidemark was just the opposite, starting slowly in her first nine holes with a 42. But she recovered nicely with four birdies on the front side of the course for a 34 on the front and her 76 on the day.

 

The Spartans, who sit in 20 h place in the team standings at 624, will wrap up play on Tuesday with an 8:45 am shotgun start.

Paladins Card Second Round 292, Move Into Ninth At Cougar Classic

 

Hanahan, S.C. ? Sophomores Jackie Hilea and Stefanie Kenoyer each fired an even-par 72 on Monday to move the Furman women’s golf team into ninth after two rounds in the Cougar Classic at the Yeaman’s Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C.

 

Hilea (75-72=147), a native of Kaneohe, Hawai’i, birdied three holes on her way to an even-par round while Kenoyer (72-72=144) notched two birdies in second round play to remain in a tie for 13th place.

 

Freshman Liz Wendt (83-73=156), playing just her second collegiate round, overcame two double bogeys with two birdies and an eagle over her final seven holes to fire a one-over 73 on Monday. Senior Blair Lamb (75-75=150) counted towards the Paladins’ four-over 292 with a second straight three-over-par 75.

 

The University of Georgia (288-279=567) moved into a 13-stroke lead over second place Virginia (288-292=580) on the strength of a nine-under 279.

UGA senior Mallory Hetzel (68-69=137) took a three-stroke lead with a second round 69.  She leads four golfers, including first round co-leader Whitney Neuhauser of Virginia, entering the final round.

Hetzel Leads Georgia to Cougar Classic Lead after Two Rounds

 

Hanahan, S.C. - Summerville native Mallory Hetzel carded a 69 to take first individually and lead the Georgia women's golf team to first with a 567 after the second round of the Cougar Classic, being held Sept .14-16 at Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C.  The Cougars fired a 301 finish the day in 11th with a 601.

 

Virginia is second with a 580, while Alabama is third with a 581.  Four players are tied for second and trail Hetzel by three strokes.  Florida State's Caroline Westrup, Georgia's Marta Silva, South Carolina's Katie Burnett and Virginia's Whitney Neuhauser all have a 140 after 36 holes.

 

Leading the Cougars is Fiona Puyo, who is tied for 13th with a 144 after shooting a 71 on the day.  Steffi Kirchmayr is tied for 39th with a 150.  Tied for 50th is Leigh Whittaker with a 152 and tied for 74th is Courtney Brink with her 155.  Rounding out the Cougar top five is Gabi Zuber, who is tied for 93rd with a 159.

 

Kati Scholten is competing as an individual for Charleston and is tied for 48th with her 151.

 

The third and final round tees off at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday and is a shotgun format.  There is a Rose Ceremony at hole #1 starting at 8:30 a.m. to honor several breast cancer survivors.  It is sponsored by the Susan G. Komen For the Cure.

SAMFORD WOMEN’S GOLF SHOOTS SCHOOL-RECORD 291; TAKES SECOND PLACE IN WCU TOURNEY

--- The Bulldogs’ Katelyn Stanier paced the team with a 2-under 70 in round one ---

 

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Samford University women’s golf team turned in its best round in school history Monday as the Bulldogs fired an impressive 3-under 291 at the 2008 Great Smokies Collegiate. The score was good for second place in the opening round held at the par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Country Club.

 

Samford concluded day one of the two-day competition with all five of its players shooting 76 or under.

 

The Bulldogs’ junior all-conference performer Katelyn Stanier led the way with a 2-under 70 (35-35). A native of Newnan, Ga., Stanier finished round one tied for fourth place in the tournament.

 

Also shooting under par for Samford on Monday was junior Sara Hunt. The Bulldogs’ native of Columbia, Tenn., fired a first-round score of 1-under 71 (38-33), which was good for eighth place amongst all competitors. Hunt’s back-nine score of 33 was tied for the tournament’s best round of the day.

 

Samford’s Sara Butts (37-38) and Maria Troche (36-39) both turned in first-round scores of  75, while Heather Arnold carded a first-day total of 76 (37-39).

 

The Bulldogs placed second out of 21 teams Monday and trailed only the homestanding Western Carolina Catamounts by seven strokes. Western Carolina, the host team of the 2008 Great Smokies Collegiate, tallied a 4-under 284 in the opening round.

 

Individually, Tennessee Tech’s Carley Rhyne, Austin Peay’s Chelsea Harris and Belmont’s Lorie Warren all posted tournament-best scores of 3-under 69.

 

Samford will conclude play in the 2008 Great Smokies Collegiate on Tuesday as the Bulldogs compete in the final two rounds of the season-opening tournament.

 

 

 

Terriers set school record as Hurt opens collegiate career under par

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- Wofford freshman Sarah Hurt ended the opening round of her collegiate career under par leading the Terriers to a fourth-place result following day one action at the Cullowhee Cafe Great Smokies Collegiate at the par 72, 5,922-yard Waynesville Country Club course in Waynesville, N.C.

Wofford fired a 5-over par 293 as a team, shattering a school record for 18 holes. The previous best was 301, set during last season's season opener Sept. 18 at the Colonial Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va.

Hurt, the lone rookie on the Wofford squad this season, posted a 35-35--70 (-2) to join four others one shot off the lead and tie for fourth among the 115 individuals in the field. Although she is the lone Terrier in the top 10, Hurt had a solid day on both nines in her first collegiate action.

Senior Erin Wells, a 2007 All-Southern Conference honoree, is the next Wofford individual in the clubhouse with a 35-37--72 (E). Sophomore Meredith Few is two shots back at 36-38--74 (+2) to tie for 25th.

The final Terrier counter on the day was junior Sarah Herbert, who fired a 39-38--77 (+5) to tie for 59th.

Sophomore Alex Rankin, a two-time SoCon Player of the Week last March, concluded the Wofford contingent with an 8-over par 38-42--80 to tie for 83rd.

Host Western Carolina holds a seven-shot lead over league newcomer Samford in the team standings. The Lady Catamounts are the only school among the 22 teams to finish round one under par with a 4-under par 284.

Belmont's Lorie Warren, Austin Peay State's Chelsea Harris and Tennessee Tech's Carley Rhyne have set the pace for the individual lead with 3-under par 69s.

The two-day, 36-hole event will conclude with the final round Tuesday.
