College of Charleston 3, Brown 1
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Two goals by Matt Morris capped a three goal first period, leading the College of Charleston's men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over #18 Brown on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars knock off their second straight nationally-ranked opponent and take home the 2008 Aaron Olitsky Memorial/Nike Soccer Classic Championship.
"We could not have come out and played any better today against another nationally ranked team in Brown," said head coach Ralph Lundy. "A lot of credit has to go to our seniors, who have worked really hard both on the field and in the classroom. I'm very proud of them."
The Cougars wasted no time in the first period getting on the scoreboard, as Matt Morris took a pass from Kareem Yearwood and scored his second goal of the weekend to make the score 1-0.
Morris, however, was not done there, as he netted another goal roughly six minutes later off a free kick from Casey Gold to make the score 2-0 in favor of Charleston.
At the 41 minute mark, Jedd Cordisco ended the half with a goal of his own on a breakaway to make the score 3-0 going into the second half.
In the second half, Brown failed to make a comeback attempt and did not register a goal in the match until the 89th minute. Goalie Brendan Smith picked up another victory after making four saves in net for the Cougars.
For his efforts, Morris was named the tournament's most valuable player, while fellow Charleston players Sean Bateau, Wes Knight, Zach Prince and John Bello were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the first game of the day, Ohio State defeated Furman 4-1, after scoring three unanswered goals in the second half.
The Cougars will return to action on Friday, September 19, when they host South Carolina at Patriots Point. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
Appalachian State 2, Winthrop 1 (OT)
ROCK HILL, S.C.- Sean Dreybus scored just two minutes into overtime off an assist from Arie Muniz to give Appalachian a 2-1 win over Winthrop in the Winthrop Classic Sunday afternoon.
Dreybus took a pass from Muniz and took a shot just inside the box beating the goalkeeper to the lower right corner. The overtime win is the Mountaineers second consecutive overtime win as they beat Gardner-Webb in double overtime on Friday. The goal was Dreybus's third goal of the season while Muniz's two assists gives him four on the season. With the win, Appalachian moves to 4-0 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, Winthrop scored first when Daniel Revivo knocked a rebound past Appalachian goalkeeper Collin Taylor. The Mountaineers tied the score just seven minutes later when Muniz played the ball through to Juan Obregon who drilled it past th Winthrop keeper to tie the score at one
Taylor finished the match with five saves picking up his fourth win of the season.
The Mountaineers were declared the winner of the tournament with their 2-0 record. Dreybus, Steven Sassano, Paul Pessina and Obregon were named to the All-Tournament team while Dreybus was named the offensive MVP.
Appalachian travels to High Point on Wednesday, Sept. 17 to take on the Panthers at 7 p.m.
UNC Greensboro 1, UNC Asheville 1
ELON, N.C. ? Michael Bonilla’s goal with 6:01 remaining in regulation tied the match as UNC Greensboro forged a 1-1 tie with UNC Asheville in Sunday afternoon men’s soccer action at the Elon Tournament.
Jokull Elisabetarson was named the MVP of the tournament as UNCG went 1-0-1 in the tourney. Elon lost to East Tennessee State, 1-0, later in the day to give UNCG the best record in the tourney during the weekend. Chad Dickerson, Matt Elliott and E.J. O’Keeffe also earned all-tournament honors.
Bonilla, a redshirt sophomore, recorded his first collegiate points of his career off a through ball. Tim Masters and Matt Strine recorded assists on the play, which erased UNCA’s chance for its first win of the season. The Bulldogs had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute when Caleb Alexander scored unassisted. Alexander’s tally came after a misplayed clear attempt by UNCG.
Dickerson, making his second straight start, made six saves for the Spartans (1-3-1). UNC Asheville’s Lassi Hurskainen made five saves for the Bulldogs (0-2-1), who have never beaten the Spartans in 12 tries. UNC Asheville had a 19-16 advantage in shots, while UNCG had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
UNCG returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Campbell at 7 pm.
Ohio State 4, Furman 1
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The 16th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes netted four unanswered goals on their way to a 4-1 victory over Furman at the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic on Sunday in Charleston, S.C.
The Buckeyes improved to 4-1-1 on the season while Furman dropped its third straight match to fall to 1-4-0.
Furman came out on the attack in the opening half hour with several early shots capped by Patrick Murray’s first goal of the season at the 22:00 mark.
Matt Gold scored just before the half in the 43rd minute to tie the match and Julian Sisman gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead netting a goal in the 51st minute. Ohio State put the match out of reach in the final 10 minutes when Danny Irazarry scored in the 82nd minute and Andrew Magill beat Paladin keeper Alec Kann in the 85th minute for the final 4-1 margin.
Furman outshot the Buckeyes 14-12, but managed just one shot on goal.
Drew Czekanski earned the win in goal for Ohio State while Kann made one save for Furman in the loss.
Furman looks to bounce back when it faces Georgia State in the Wofford Invitational next Friday at 5 p.m. at Snyder Field.
East Tennessee State 1, Elon 0
ELON, N.C. -- Despite dominating in nearly every statistical category, the Elon Phoenix wound up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in the final match of the inaugural Elon Classic men's soccer tournament on Sunday afternoon. In the first match of the day, UNC Greensboro and UNC Asheville played to a 1-1 tie.
In the first 45 minutes of play, Elon (1-3-1) mustered eight shots, including four on goal, to four total attempts, none of which were on frame, for ETSU (3-2-0).
Elon's Steven Kinney was denied a goal in 32nd minute as a Buc defender raced behind keeper James Holt and stopped the ball just short of the goal line. That would be the trend all afternoon for the Phoenix who finished with 19 total shots, seven of which had to be saved by ETSU.
In the 58th minute, Sean Hoek took the ball away from the Elon defenders and raced in and beat Kyle Boerner for the game's lone tally. It was the second score of the year for Hoek.
Following Hoek's goal, the Phoenix took nine more shots, including three stopped by Holt, but could not find the back of the net.
Boerner finished the day with two saves in his 90 minutes while Holt stopped six attempts.
ETSU ended the match with seven total shots, three on goal. Elon also committed fewer fouls (7-10) and earned more corner kicks (7-1).
