SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference named its football players of the week for the games played on Thursday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 30. Wofford halfback Dane Romero was named Offensive Player of the Week, Appalachian State linebacker Jacque Roman was selected Defensive Player of the Week, The Citadel fullback Asheton Jordan was tabbed Freshman of the Week and The Citadel punt returner Andre Roberts was voted as the Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week were selected by the league’s sports information directors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dane Romero, Wofford, HB, Sr.

Romero rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns to lead Wofford to a season-opening 38-21 win over Presbyterian. The senior also caught a pair of passes for eight yards while becoming the first Terrier to score three touchdowns in a game since Kevious Johnson achieved the feat on Sept. 29, 2007. Romero scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the second and third quarters, and his four-yard touchdown run with 2:52 remaining in the fourth quarter sealed the victory.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jacque Roman, Appalachian State, LB, Jr.

The junior linebacker had a game-high 12 tackles against No. 7 LSU in addition to an interception which he returned 13 yards to set up an Appalachian field goal. Two of Roman’s stops were solo tackles.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Asheton Jordan, The Citadel, FB, Fr.

The Summerville, S.C., native put on a show for the home crowd in his first collegiate game, totaling 100 of the Bulldogs’ 385 yards of total offense. Jordan rushed for 70 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries while also catching four passes for 30 yards as The Citadel topped Webber International, 54-7.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Andre Roberts, The Citadel, PR, Jr.

The All-American wide receiver returned the first punt for a touchdown since 1999 in The Citadel’s win over Webber International Saturday evening. In addition to his 64-yard score, Roberts returned a total of four punts for 116 yards, averaging 29 yards per attempt to post the highest average in the FCS during week one.
