Eugene Ore. -- Furman’s Stefanie Kenoyer defeated Ryann O’Toole of San Clemente Calif., 4 & 3 in the opening round of match play Wednesday afternoon at the 108th United States Women’s Amateur Golf Championship at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Kenoyer, a rising sophomore at Furman, advances to Thursday’s round of 32 where she will face Canada’s Kira Meixner at 9:30 a.m. Meixner advanced by defeating Jennie Lee of Henderson, Nevada, on Wednesday.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur began with 155 players taking part in 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday with the top 64 advancing to match play. Kenoyer, a native of Lighthouse Point, Fla., shot 75 on Monday and a one-over 73 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 25th place.
The individual medalist at the Southern Conference Championships, Kenoyer earned NGCA Scholar All-American honors and All-SoCon honors as a freshman this past season. She helped Furman claim the Southern Conference title, place eighth at the NCAA East Regional and advance to the NCAA Championship.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur round of 32 will take place tomorrow morning with the final 16 golfers scheduled to face off in the afternoon. The Golf Channel will televise Thursday’s play from 4-6 p.m.
