UNC Greensboro 3, Coastal Carolina 2 (OT)
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Junior forward Kelly Attayek (Raleigh, NC) netted the game winner in the 102nd minute of play to lead the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Coastal Carolina at the UNCG Soccer Stadium, Friday evening. The win gives the Spartans an early 1-0-0 record while the Chanticleers fall to 0-1-0 after the first match of the year for both teams.
After giving up an early goal on a misplay from the back line, UNCG rebounded to net the equalizer in the 14th minute of the game. Jamie Corti (Apex, NC) rose above the mass in the box to get her head on a Kristin Player (Placentia, CA) corner kick to give the Spartans their first goal of the season. For Corti, it was just the second goal of her career. Player added her seventh career assist to help pull UNCG even.
The Spartans nearly pulled ahead in the 24th minute when a scramble in front of the net off a free kick led to a header by Lauren Lopez (Concord, NC) that was saved on the line by a Coastal Carolina defender. Jenn Partenheimer (Apex, NC) struck the rebound but sent her fourth shot of the half high and wide.
Mary Kate Towne (Royal Palm Beach, FL) helped give the Spartans a brief lead in the second half, sending a cross into the box that found it’s way into the net on an attempted clear by Coastal’s Colleen Schohl. The Spartans had two quick opportunities in the box as Kim Murphy (Wake Forest, NC) attempted her first shot as a Spartan with a header that was deflected by Coastal goalkeeper Amy Haggard. Player then ripped a shot that seemed as if it had eyes for the net but it was deflected away by a Coastal defender inside the box.
Heather Haupt pulled the Chanticleers even in the 67th minute, sending a shot from the opposite side of the field into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season to ultimately send the game into overtime.
After battling through the first overtime without a goal, the Spartans wasted little time in netting the game winner. Katie Evans (Raleigh, NC) turned with a pass to Towne who then turned at the top of the box and nudged a through ball between several Coastal defenders to the feet of Attayek who then slotted the ball into the lower left corner to end the game and send the Spartans to their first victory of the season.
UNCG took 18 shots to Coastal Carolina’s eight putting 11 of them on net, forcing Haggard to make six saves. Vogel led the Spartans in goal, recording four saves in just the fifth start of the career. The Spartans also bested the Chanticleers on the corner kicks, sending nine kicks into the box, including one that would eventually lead to their first goal of the game.
The Spartans will finish out their season-opening home-stand when they welcome Utah to the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday. Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m.

North Carolina State 1, Wofford 0 (OT)
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Wofford women's soccer team survived a furious offensive attack by host North Carolina State only to surrender the game's only goal in the first overtime to drop a 1-0 decision to the host Wolfpack Friday evening in Raleigh, N.C.
The Terriers, who opened their 15th season overall and 10th under head coach Amy Kiah with tonight's contest, started the game with three shots in the first period. However, NC State (1-0) would shut down the Wofford attack the rest of the game and keep the Terriers from attempting another shot following senior Mary Rea's header at 33:58.
Freshmen Rachael Blackburn, playing in her hometown, and Brentwood, Tenn., native Anne Phillips registered the other two shots for Wofford (0-1).
North Carolina State would overcome the early aggressive start by the Terriers by posting six shots of its own before halftime. The Wolfpack continued their offensive push with another 14 attempts during the second 45 minutes; however, Wofford goalkeeper Katie McChesney kept the hosts off the scoreboard with nine second half saves, including three consecutive stops in the 80th minute.
The two teams entered the extra frame scoreless before NC State's Lindsay Vera sent a couple shots towards the cage. Her first attempt sailed high with McChesney tallying a save on the second shot.
Vera then turned her attention to helping her teammates when she was credited with an assist on Kara Baldy's game-winning goal at 96:05. Tami Krzeszewski also picked up an assist on the score.
McChesney, also playing in her hometown, finished the contest matching her career high with 11 saves, a total she reached twice during her freshman campaign a year ago. She played the entire 96:05, extending her streak to 1938:53 consecutive minutes in net for the Terriers.
Vera led all players with six shots, including four on goal. Paige Dugal, Jess Herrmann and Meredith Parrilla registered three attempts apiece for the Pack.
The two teams played to a 1-0 overtime score for the second-straight meeting, following NC State's single goal triumph during the 1999 match.
A number of Terriers stepped onto the field for the first time as collegians. In addition to Blackburn and Phillips, fellow rookies and Raleigh-area products Sydney Reed and Maggie McLaughlin earned starts. Jackie Togno and Anne Breeden came off the bench for their first action.
Wofford will continue its opening weekend of action with a 2 p.m. Sunday tilt at High Point in High Point, N.C.
No. 8 Texas 4, Samford 0
AUSTIN, Texas --- The Samford University soccer team squared off against its highest-ranked opponent since the 2005 season Friday and dropped a 4-0 decision on the road versus the eighth-ranked Texas Longhorns at the Mike A. Myers Soccer Stadium.
Samford (0-1) suffered its worst defeat since a similar 4-0 defeat versus Mississippi State in 2001. The eighth-ranked Texas Longhorns were the Bulldogs’ highest-ranked opponent since facing the No. 4-ranked Pepperdine Waves in the second round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
Texas (1-0) opened the scoring during the 11th minute of play as freshman midfielder Courtney Goodson tallied her first career goal to give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead. On the game-winning score, Goodson registered an unassisted goal to give Texas its early advantage.
During the 34th minute of play, Texas extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal from senior defender Stephanie Logterman. The score was the first of two for Logterman, who later added another goal in the 62nd minute to give the Longhorns a 4-0 advantage.
Texas’ third goal of the match was tallied by freshman Amanda Lisberger during the 60th minute of the season-opening contest. Lisberger’s score was achieved as a previous shot ricocheted off Samford goalkeeper Alyssa Whitehead to provide an open net for the goal.
Samford’s Whitehead, a true freshman, made her first career start Friday and allowed four goals in 90 minutes of play. The Bulldogs’ native of Hattiesburg, Miss., also set a personal career-high with nine saves in the game.
Samford, which played without the services of a number of injured players Friday, was outshot 17-3 in its season opener of the 2008 campaign.
The Bulldogs were led offensively by junior Amber Cress, redshirt freshman Sarah Wilkinson and sophomore Kelly Shaffer. All three Samford players finished with one shot apiece.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday, Aug. 29, as the Bulldogs continue their eight-game, season-opening road trip against the Milwaukee Panthers at 7 p.m., in Milwaukee, Wis.
No. 13 Tennessee 5, Chattanooga 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? Despite losing by a 5-0 deficit, Chattanooga head coach J.D. Kzyer saw reason for optimism Friday night as the UTC women’s soccer team fell to the 13th-ranked Lady Vols at the North River Soccer Complex.
“Five-0 is never good,” Kyzer said. “But to play as well as we did was good. It was 3-0 at halftime and they didn’t break down our defense to score.”
Tennessee outshot the Lady Mocs 30-2 with 18 shots in the first half and 17 on goal. UTC keeper Allie Preston (Asheville, N.C.) was one of six freshman to take the field for Kyzer in the season opener. She recorded 12 saves in the game and stopped a penalty kick from Devon Swaim.
“We had a freshman in goal who stopped their All-American (Kylee Rossi) one-on-one and got the PK,” Kyzer said. “We’re going to be okay.”
It took more than 23 minutes for the Lady Vols to find the goal. Leslie Vineyard took a pass from Mick Imgram at the 23:15 mark after a corner kick placed the ball in front of the net. Rossi scored on an assist from Vineyard just over three minutes later and then topped off the first half scoring with her second goal of the season at 33:11 on a pass from Julie Edwards.
Chattanooga managed a pair of hard won shots from Chelsea Hurst (Flintville, Tenn.) and Macy Johnson (Ooltewah, Tenn.) late in the second period, but failed to find the goal.
Midway through the second period off a corner, UTK’s Alissa VonderHaar took a deflection off a Chattanooga defender at the goal and found Anna Fisher who recorded her first goal of the season. With 69:23 gone in the game, Fisher broke away and raced down the field. Preston challenged her and the pass made its way to a sliding Emily Dowd for the final tally of the game.
More than 1,000 fans, with many wearing gold, turned out to watch the first match between the two University of Tennessee schools.
“I think the large turnout was good,” Kyzer said. “Not only for the team, but for the community, the school and soccer as a whole.”
The Lady Mocs return to action Friday, Aug. 29 against High Point at the North River Complex. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. and admission is free as it is all season.
