Players to Watch:

Linebacker Pierre Banks

Armanti Edwards, Jr., Quarterback

Edwards was a threat on the ground and in the air last season, rushing for more than 1,500 yards and passing for nearly 2,000. The junior rushed for more than 200 yards three times in ’07, including an NCAA-QB record 313 yards against Richmond in the FCS semifinal round.

Pierre Banks, Sr., Linebacker

One of ASU’s defensive leaders over the past three seasons, Banks led the Mountaineers in tackles as a sophomore and placed fourth last season.

Preview:

Appalachian State continued to reach new heights in 2007 as the Mountaineers became the first team to win three consecutive Football Championship Subdivision national titles. ASU started off the season in dramatic fashion with a 34-32 upset of No. 5 Michigan in Ann Arbor and in doing so became the first FCS team to knock off a ranked FBS squad.

The 2008 Mountaineers will once again be lead by junior Armanti Edwards, a dual-threat quarterback who amassed more than 3,500 yards of total offense last season. Running back Devon Moore will step into the spot vacated by ASU’s all-time leading rusher Kevin Richardson while the Mountaineers’ defense will be anchored by a strong linebacker core of D.J. Smith, Jacque Roman and Pierre Banks.

Head coach Jerry Moore will patrol the ASU sidelines for the 20th straight season, as he aims to guide ASU to its fourth national championship and its fourth consecutive SoCon title.
