Preview:

Change is the key word for Western Carolina in 2008 as new head coach Dennis Wagner looks to revive a Catamounts program that enters the season in the midst of a two-year SoCon losing streak. Despite the losses in 2007, the Catamounts remained competitive, dropping three of its October games by a total of 11 points.

Returning quarterback Adam Hearns combined with Todd Spitzer to achieve the league’s second-best passing totals a year ago. Hearns and sophomore wide out Marquel Pittman will be looking upon again in 2008 to spearhead WCU’s passing attack while junior tailback Willie Harper should get most of the carries out of the backfield.

On defense, WCU returns seven starters from last season, including all-SoCon linebacker Quintin Phillips whose 127 tackles were the second-most in the SoCon. Wagner will also rely on seniors Brandon Drumgoole and Jeff Bradley to provide a strong defensive front.

After starting its SoCon schedule with three of the first four games on the road, WCU finishes with home games in three of its final four contests, including the Battle for the Old Mountain Jug against Appalachian State on Nov. 22. This year’s matchup will be televised as a part of the SoCon’s weekly television package on SportSouth.
