Players to Watch:

Linebacker Seth Goldwire

Dane Romero, Sr., Running Back

Romero was a key part in Wofford’s wingbone offense in 2007, rushing for nearly nine yards per carry and scoring five touchdowns. In 2008, the senior is one of the Terriers’ most experience rushers as he is expected to start at one halfback position.

Seth Goldwire, Sr., Linebacker

A consensus first-team all-SoCon linebacker in 2007, Goldwire led the Terriers and ranked sixth in the SoCon with 108 tackles. As a team, Wofford’s defense rated first in the SoCon in scoring defense and second in total defense.

Preview:

After being predicted to finish third by the league’s coaches and media in 2007, Wofford earned its second SoCon Football championship in the past five seasons after finishing 5-2 and sharing the title with Appalachian State. The Terriers then knocked off previously undefeated and third-seeded Montana, 23-22, in the opening round of the FCS playoffs.

Head coach Mike Ayers has a number of key players to replace after losing 13 starters from last year’s championship squad. On offense, senior quarterback Ben Widmyer steps into the starting role after playing in 10 of the Terriers’ 12 contests a year ago. The strength of Wofford’s offense may lie in the offensive line where second-team all-SoCon members Ben Quick and Derek Wooten anchor a unit that finished second nationally in rushing offense.

Wofford’s defense will turn to linebackers Seth Goldwire and Matt Norcia to provide leadership, while nose tackle Layton Baker.

The reigning SoCon co-champions will be featured on SportSouth three times in 2008 while the Terriers’ Oct. 31 visit to Appalachian State will be shown nationally on ESPN2.
