Players to Watch:

Linebacker Joseph Thornton

Bryan Fitzgerald, Sr., Running Back

Fitzgerald was very effective on the ground for the Mocs last season, gaining 798 yards while averaging 6.8 yards per carry. Fitzgerald and junior Erroll Wynn combine to give UTC one of the most dangerous running back tandems in the country.

Joseph Thornton, Jr., Linebacker

Thornton tied for second in the SoCon in 2007 in interceptions with four while also recording 66 tackles. The 6’2”, 190-lbs. junior also recorded 17.5 tackles for loss for a SoCon-best average of 1.59 per contest.

Preview:

Following a 45-38, overtime win at Georgia Southern in its SoCon-opener last season, Chattanooga struggled down the stretch to finish in seventh place in the league standings.

The 2008 Mocs boast a dangerous running back duo in senior Bryan Fitzgerald and junior Erroll Wynn, who combined for more than 1,500 yards as a pair last season. UTC also returns its top two wide receivers from 2007 in Clint Woods and Blue Cooper.

On defense, Chattanooga will be breaking in eight new starters and will count on the leadership of junior linebacker Joseph Thornton and senior defensive end Neil Brown.

One of head coach Rodney Allison’s main weapons in 2008 will be junior placekicker Craig Camay who was 7-of-8 on field goal attempts last season, including a long of 46 yards.

Chattanooga also faces a daunting schedule in 2008 with road games at traditional FBS powers Oklahoma and Florida State in addition to the always-tough SoCon slate. UTC will be featured on SportSouth at Wofford on Oct. 11.
